Bert Finds the Matchbox; A Nostalgia Trip

Well, Bert's still nursing a bit of "trauma" what with the abrupt loss of his online pix. I'm afraid there is still a need to "nudge" him into the "posing mood".

I was in the process of doing so on another... um, site when it was "hacked" (or whatever). Since the thread in progress involved Matchbox, I've elected to resume with Matchbox. Fortunately, there's one MB "bay" in Swifty's Garage, so we needn't be concerned with pre/post 1997, RW vs. Superfast, or Lesney vs. whoever issues here. That will simplify things. Simplicity is important when you're dealing with trauma (so I'm told).

Since I'm not sure where I left off--let alone who might've seen what already--this will begin at the beginning. My apologies to those of you who have seen these before. We beg your indulgence.

Whenever I think Bert needs cheering up, a convertible will often do the trick. Or a Camaro.

How about a Camaro convertible...

"Is that... um, 1/63 scale?"

Good eye, Officer.

Wow, I missed ol' Bert and his thoughtful (and brief!) critiques of the castings, which I'm sure resulted in some ticketed violations off-camera in some instances. There have certainly been some egregious "violations" in the line over the decades..... :P

Thanks for bringing back another themed story for us!

Bert knows how to pick some good looking Matchbox cars.

You mean they put a scale on the model that actually means something. :D

Bert the Cop is a 6'4" police officer who's 1/64 scale beat is somewhere in SoCal. As seen here his height includes his cap and the "cushion" he stands upon. (That's what he calls it; a "cushion". Says it keeps him from getting sore feet, but I suspect that's an excuse to gain a couple inches of height. It's difficult enough to get him to pose with these cars, so I don't make an issue of it.) He likes the color blue. So much so, that when he speaks, the text comes out blue. Don't ask us to explain it.

Another favorite subject with us is "car/trucks"...

MB says this 1970 El Camino is "1/69", but I think that may apply only to the length. Width-wise it looks very close to 1/64. It does appear to be a bit fat when viewed from above. The tooling is getting very worn judging by more recent editions of the casting. This is one we wish MB would retool in more strictly 1/64 scale proportions.

And please MB, keep the bed open.

"More recent editions? You have more of these, kid?"

Patience, Officer. Patience.

Quite a concept, huh?

Unfortunately, what it means and what it is were not always the same thing, even back then.

Ahh yes, I know what you mean about variances of scale in length, width and height of a model, but I like that they were typically closer to reality in their scales then than their current claims of 1:64 on the bases of many Matchbox as just a generic term for a 3 inch casting, which kind of irks me..... maybe Bert can relate. :D

Thanks for the welcome, everyone!

Oh yeah, Doug, Bert can relate to the "Not Really 1/64" claims. Very frustrating for him.

But the 1/63 figure on this Mercury Sable wagon seems credible...

"Hey kid, what about those squad cars, anyway?"

We'll get there, Officer. We'll get there.

Another one that says "1/64" on the base...

If accurate, then the Chrysler Atlantic is a fairly big car.

"Must be that straight eight under the hood..."

Classic Matchbox...

In a classic (imo) scale: 1/64!

"I notice the front doors open, kid."

Uh, yeahhh...

"So that means I can get innit."

Yeah, so?

"So how come no keys?"

Hafta ask the guy who drove it here, Officer.

Dear Bert,

You were sorely missed.
Glad you found the Garage.
I enjoy your conversations, if they can be called that.

But Bert, you should get your hands out of your pockets and get back to work.

Regards,

Thanks for the warm welcome, folks! (It may just get Bert back in front of the camera.)

But, please, don't tell him anything about "getting back to work". He's been all work and no pose for so long, I've forgotten some of my camera settings.

As for the hands in pockets, that's part of a waiver people sign before they lend their cars to the lens. A couple of high-profile owners insisted on the stipulation. I think they were worried that Bert might get fingerprints on their cars.

Bert doesn't mind. This way he doesn't need frequent manicures.

As for conversations, Bert doesn't converse so much as he just "makes interactive observations". He also has a tendency toward snark, so... jus' sayin'.
