That blue Benz I promised Bert...

Posted Image

And what a shade of blue it is! Nothing for Bert to complain about here.

"Usually I leave the complaining to you anyway, kid."

Yes, well, I appreciate that, Officer. I can't find much to complain about with this one. The slight underscale (1/65) has been mentioned already.
Only thing is...

"Yeeeesssss?"

The wheels. I like the Y-spokes used on the red one better. They are a bit BMW-ish alright, but they're still better suited to this Benz. These look like they belong on a Prius.

"Hm. Well, I'll hafta wait 'til I see a Prius to weigh in on that."

You won't have to wait much longer, Officer.

Sorry, it's not Vinnie...

It's not nearly so well-traveled. I did way more traveling trying to find this plain orange Bug than this Bug has done.

Sadly, it has a QC issue: bad paint. It's barely detectable in this pic, but the orange paint is very thin toward the front. It even gets to being speckled ahead of the front axle. But it's the only copy of this edition I've been able to find, so...

"Relax, kid. We'll just call it a 'variation', or something..."

"Error" is more like it, Officer.

We were glad to find this one...

Posted Image

... but not as glad as we might have been if not for... for...

"You're having trouble expressing yourself again, kid."

That's not all I'm having trouble with Officer. I'm also having trouble fighting the urge to rip the... um, wheels off this thing and give it something more fitting. Just need to determine the as-it-is collectability factor.

Lessee, what's worse; losing the "C" factor, or enduring the FW factor... :duh:
Like that V.W.

One of Bert's fellow public servants pays a visit...

... and avoids the camera.

We were glad to find this 2007 edition of the '97 Tahoe, but dismayed at the apparent condition of the tooling. The thick hood and ragged top edge of the windshield opening are plain to see, especially in mint green. :(

Still, a very interesting motif. Too bad it's driver wouldn't pose for us.

"Yeah, well, Ranger Bob's not used to seeing people a lot."

Bert's seen sports coupes, SUVs and crossovers in his department's fleet, but only one wagon. Now...

Posted Image
Hmm...as I'm slowly working on collecting the variations of this police casting, this is a new one for me. And I like it - a lot. The tampo work is really well done..wish MB would have more of these models today.

Thanks for the look. :)

The better version...

Posted Image

By "better" I mean that--unlike the others so far--the light bar on this 4WD Bug is separate from the windows. MB made the best use of that feature by giving a good, neutral tint to the glass and a red light bar tamped with a silver center.

"Makes quite a difference, kid."

You're telling me, Officer! As I recall, this is the first and earliest version of this casting that we found. All the later versions we found have the one-piece light bar/glass construction.

"Well, you just gotta get out there quicker, is all."

Uh, what? Is that you--you--telling me to "get out there quicker"? You, Officer Bert?

One... more... time...

Back to the integrated glass/light bar design, and a really odd color is used. It looks too brown-ish to be for UV protection, though it does coordinate with the car's quasi-military desert-camo schtick. Woulda left it on the peg, but...

"'But it's a BUG!' she said, right kid?"

You got it, Officer.

This should make him happy.

This B+W Charger appears to be the same casting as the metallic red 1/67 scale Charger seen in a past post. Seems like Matchbox threw us a curve by not altering the tooling to install a light bar. They've done emergency vehicles without emergency lights before, but police units? Have they done those? Without lights, I mean?

They may have, I just can't think of any right now. (Bert's no help.)

"Nice smooth-top y'got there kid. But I like having people notice me when I'm threading through traffic at high speed."

Yeah, I could understand that, Officer.

Very interesting, Hobie-wan. It would be great if MB did a 1/64 "stealth Camaro" as in that article.

"I'd be very interested in that myself, kid."

A very elegant forest green...

... for... trudging through the forest, I guess.

It's another great edition of the 1/64 Range Rover Sport; proper tamping, glazing, "wheeling" and all. It's also a good example of a casting I might not have acquired so many of had it not been done 1/64. But as it is, I just may put a Range Rover dealership on the layout. :toy:

"So, you trust that scale figure that much, huh?"

Now Officer, don't go bursting any of my scale bubbles. I've got too many of these things.

Matchbox's iteration is bang onto the real Auburn Hills police car (which is a slicktop):

Interestingly enough, all of the seven Chargers that were released in police livery were slicktops..imo we don't see enough of those in small-scale.

Uh-oh! MB's Auburn Hills police unit has 6-spoke wheels! The real one has 5-spoke wheels! FAIL!!

"Uh, kid, you're kidding, right?"

"Kid?"

Matchbox does the real thing in 1/64 scale...

Posted Image

... in a real-world color known as "champagne".

It's not my favorite color, but it's seen all over the place on real cars so it's a great color to have on a model. Especially a 1/64 scale model. Matchbox outdid themselves with the reality factor of this Lexus GS 430. Besides paint color, the interior, glass and tampoes are all perfect selections. Even the generic wheels are perfect.

"Sheesh, kid, it's almost like they were trying to sell this car to you!"

Oh no, Officer! Have I become... a target demographic? A representative sampling? A... a... designated market? :o

"Could be. I told you not to be so opinionated."

Awww who are you kidding, Officer? If MB was aiming at people like me, we've apparently fallen from favor. I don't think this model has been in the line-up since 2010.

"Oh, yeah. I forgot this is a nostalgia trip we're on here..."

I like this style Range Rover much better than the new one Matchbox made....Honestly, to me this looks more like a truck or utility vehicle that Range Rovers were meant to be rather than the new styles. :D

Well, the nice relaxing weekend is over...

Posted Image

... and Bert's seeing red convertibles already.

This one hits close to home. A video engineer at a certain studio I often worked at was the son of a Mercedes-Benz dealership owner. So he (the son) would often show up at the gate driving cars that were above the pay grade of 99% of the people working at the studio. One day he pulled into the parking lot in one of these. A real one, I mean. Red w/black interior, top down, the whole schlemiel. I had to be careful to avoid drooling.

So does Bert, I'm thinking.

"Now kid, I'm used to this type of thing. Some people are always trying to impress me with their cars, like they think they can get out of a ticket."

Does it ever work, Officer?

"Well, one time there was this Lambo..."

That other Matchbox SSR we found...

Posted Image

Nice color. Kinda Hot Wheels-ish, but tasteful. Though these generic wheels are markedly different from the type usually seen on the Chevy SSR (and the "My Classic Car" version), they work amazingly well on this casting. Once again, MB used the tampo budget to best effect.

"Kid, can I get the owner to raise that bed cover for me?"

Officer, you'll need that Sawzall you mentioned up thread.

A very useful generic...

Posted Image

... believable, too, the over-sized "tangs" not withstanding. I guess MB felt they had to up-size those for durabiltiy and practical use. As nicely proportioned as it is (as a small 1/64 fork lift), there's still one "operational flaw". I tried fitting an Ertl 1/64 scale operator into the seat, and his neck was almost snapped. Seems the space between the seat and the canopy top is less than "safe". Raising the top would destroy the balance of the model's proportions, so a better solution might be to lower the height of the seat cushion. (As it is, the steering wheel ends up right at the operator's knees, anyway. Not real comfy.)

Though it's one of those castings that gets redecorated a lot, this first edition of the Power Lift still my favorite. It's tempting to compare it to Lesney's Lansing Bagnall fork lift truck from decades ago.

"Yeah, well, maybe you should just do that someday, kid."

Well, maybe I just will, Officer.

Someday. (Probly been done already...)

A model that came too late to be included in my original MB fleet.

Which is a good thing, since my original fleet was given away 'round about 1966. This one was purchased in the late '80s as NOS from a hobby shop that was going out of business.

"No headroom issues here, kid."

No Officer, it's definitely from a different era.
