I've loved 1:1 Panteras since "back in the day." That was my generation's SuperCar.

One of the best-looking Porsches ever built...

... thinks Bert. And me.

This 928 was acquired new for the same purpose as our other late Lesneys; slot car track scenery. At 1/59 scale it's not way too far off 1/64, but we suspect it could be a bit larger than stated. Just kinda feels that way.

"What? 'Kinda feels that way'? Kid, what happened to measuring these things?"

Same thing that happened to you posing with these things I suppose, Officer.

"That's right, blame it on the plastic guy..."

Compared to this thing--the Tomica iteration of the DeTomasso Pantera (which I have) is also better. As with many of the Matchbox from this era--the proportions are WAY off!

Hard to believe this one's been around for a few years now...

But the VW Saveiro Cross isn't all that new. At 1/62 it's close to our ideal scale, but it could have been... 1/64. Other than that, MB did a decent job with it. I'm inclined to lament the high plastic content, but really, a lot of what is plastic on this model is plastic on the real thing, like the fenders and bumpers. (The rocker panels too, I think.) It's an interesting vehicle, flirting as it does with the El Camino/Holden Ute car/truck concept, but with an off-road crossover twist.

"Kid, it sounds like this thing doesn't know what it wants to be."

I suppose that's one way of looking at it, Officer.

One of our favorite Matchbox castings in yet another "New Superfast" edition...

Posted Image

This one has a decorated floor in the rear bed; painted a wood-ish tan color. Matches the tan interior, sort of. The tooling seems ok on this copy, although the top left rear corner of the bed wall looks like the mold might not have filled completely.

"You do know how to highlight the problems, doncha, kid?"

That's part of my job, Officer.
Matchbox ought to be thinking about some r/r's for their brand.

Sorry, it's not Vinnie...

It's not nearly so well-traveled. I did way more traveling trying to find this plain orange Bug than this Bug has done.

Sadly, it has a QC issue: bad paint. It's barely detectable in this pic, but the orange paint is very thin toward the front. It even gets to being speckled ahead of the front axle. But it's the only copy of this edition I've been able to find, so...

"Relax, kid. We'll just call it a 'variation', or something..."

"Error" is more like it, Officer.
Awesome color on an awesome vehicle.

I've seen real bugs this color...

Posted Image

...and by "real bugs" I mean insects, not cars.

But I wouldn't call this color "bug green". This color of green is so generic, there's really nothing else to call it but "green". It's like your basic green from a box of Crayolas with only eight colors. It sorta reminds me of that blue that we've seen several times before; the blue that reminds me of a Gumby cartoon, except this is green. Not a bad color for the Concept 1.

"Well kid, since green means 'GO' in a traffic signal situation, I'd say we should 'go' for a celebration!"

What would we be celebrating, Officer?

"You don't know? Think, kid, think; round things, bad round things that aren't on this car..."

Oh yeaaahhhh...

A more recent high point...

Is it a coincidence that it's also a retake on a very cool subject from the Lesney era; the #41 Ford GT40 Sports Racer? (Although I believe this is the "new" GT40, not the original 1960's car.)

Another very cool thing (for us anyway) is that this time MB chose to make it closer to 1/64 than the 1/67 Lesney original. At 1/62 Mattel overshot the mark, but still gotta give them credit for going in the right direction. (I assume that the scale figure is accurate. Bert kinda wonders about that.)

"Well, that doesn't explain why they didn't just go ahead and make it perfect at 1/64, does it, kid?"

I have never seen or heard that recurring mystery explained adequately, Officer. Not with this or any other near miss.

"You gonna post it, or shall I?"

Go ahead Officer. Make my day.

"Okay..." :beatit:

Unfortunately the model is a tad large at 1/59. The same casting as a silver copy seen last December, its proportions are good. That makes its largeness even more disappointing. But, the Y-spoke wheels are perfect for this BMW, better than the wheels on the silver copy. It's nice to see these wheels used on a Beemer at last!

The headlight tamps omit the turn indicators, license plate and black grills seen on the silver copy, so there's that. But this casting is crisper, lacking the flash seen on the silver one. Both have great glass and interior colors.

"Kid, you put me on a see-saw with this one. But I'll forgive you 'cuz it's blue."

Well, Officer, it's nice to know of a sure-fire way to get on your good side. (Blue... must remember blue...)

Much as we like Y-spoke wheels, there are instances where they might not be the best choice...

Posted Image

... like on this London Taxi. They don't look bad, but there are other designs more appropriate for the stylish frumpiness of this car.

Wouldn't you know, this is the version of the black LT that was the easiest for me to find. I bought three with the idea of re-wheeling them with small-disc wheels, for which I was amassing small-disc wheel donors. Just as soon as I had enough donors, MB came out with that wheel on the black LT seen already in this thread. So now we have three black LTs with BMW wheels.

There are other differences between this and the other black LT; black bumpers and grill (instead of silver), and this one has a complete roof beacon tamp. The headlight tamps are not as detailed as the other black LT, though.

"Well kid, ya got a bunch of competing London Taxi operators in my neighborhood. These Y-spoke guys have the biggest fleet."

Yeah. Maybe I'll refit a couple of these with Cragar mags, just to confuse everybody.

Since I was probably trying Bert's patience by posting another taxi last time...

Posted Image

... here's a bit of "Police Unit Therapy" for him.

Of course, of the three 2000 Impalas we have, this is Bert's favorite. There isn't much blue on it, but that shouldn't matter, especially since the blue is all on the car's body. The glass is lightly tinted a neutral color, allowed by the separate light bar. The lights and grill tamps are great (demonstrating how much the casting needs them) and the very light gray body color is something different. It even has painted window framing!

"I like it, but, uh... kid, the wheels are kinda... um..."

Blingy? Yes Officer, those came standard on many "New Superfast" MBs of this era. Along with all the extra tamping. Package deal.

"There's always a catch. Oh well. Show 'em that other angle anyway."

Coming right up, Officer...

We thought we were past these, but...

... apparently not.

This edition came in the Burger Zone 5-pack of 2005. (I'd have left it on the peg, otherwise.) The casting goes back to 1982, and so it has been seen riding on much better wheels. Also, it was originally issued with a metal base. This version has a plastic base. Stated to be 1/63, this '57 T-bird seems bigger than that to us. Must take measurements of it someday. If it turns out to be the scale claimed, I just might re-wheel it.

"If you do give it new wheels, that might be worth seeing, kid."

To see it, you'll need to stand in front of a camera, Officer.

"Aww, do I hafta?"

At last we have a Beetle taxi with disc wheels...

Posted Image

... not to mention some very business-like taxi tampage on the sides.

Those tamps must have used up the tampo budget. Apparently there was nothing left for headlights, or even a beacon tamp. But MB did avoid mixing some crazy color into the glass, and together with the black bumpers, yellow body, and yes, those wheels it all makes for a classic taxi-Bug look.

"The thing is still too big though, kid!"

Yes, Officer, so now we know that yellow does nothing to give us any illusion of greater smallness.

"Kid, I blame myself."

No worries Officer, it's your job.

At the risk of bugging Bert...

... we gotta get in this example from the Burger Zone 5-pack.

The fact that it is one of a 5-pack pretty much guaranteed its entry onto our collection. Had it been a single, I'm not sure the Burger Zone deco would have been sufficient to overcome the flower wheel barrier.

"Kid! Who are you kidding? 'It's a BUG!', remember?"

Sigh. Yeah, there is that too, Officer.

There were actually two versions of the play set, done with different colors. The '57 Chevrolet Bel Air from each set was differently colored as well. Both versions of the Chevy have been posted here already.

The building in the Burger Zone play set is a very strange design, having a drive-thru booth perched on the roof of the dining room. To get to the booth, the car is lifted up to the booth's driveway by an elevator which looks like a deep frying basket that french fries would be cooked in. Exiting is done via a down-ramp. The whole concept seems more suited to Hot Wheels than Matchbox.

Maybe one of these days I'll get Bert to pose with each of the playsets we have.

"Yeah, kid. Sure."
