Another favorite...![]() Once again the scale is stated to be 1/64, but this Firebird may just have a bit of the "MB stretch" width-wise. "Doesn't look bad from here, kid. And it's a T-top! Know what they call a T-top in England?" Um... uh... a "bloomin' T-top"? "Get out of here." Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:34 PM.

From the days when "upper crust" SUVs began appearing on our highways...![]() I remember when I first saw an SUV with the Mercedes-Benz badge on it. I thought, "Well, that settles it. SUVs are here to stay." Matchbox (that other MB) wasted no time rendering the things in miniature. This one is 1/62 (not 1/64) according to the base, but the slight "bigness" is hard to notice. The wheel spokes and rims seem to be a bit thick, as though the tampo machine hit them a little too hard. All four are the same on this copy. "Well, at least they were consistent. That's better than having an odd wheel on it." Yeah, Officer. Odd wheels are... odd.

The wheels on this Benz are perfect...![]() There's so much that's done so well on this car. The tamped head/tail lights, the color, the separate grill insert... Too bad the scale is 1/60 (per the base.) "I didn't think this car was supposed to be so... big."

Well, it's raining--sprinkling a little bit actually--here in SoCal, so, time to break out the Jeep...![]() ... though I doubt we'll need the boat. (I wonder if that boat comes off.) Matchbox seems to like the Jeep as much as they do (or did) Mercedes-Benz. How many different Jeep models has MB issued over the years? We don't know. This "Grand Cherokee" is labeled "1/58" on the base, which is surprising since MB usually renders vehicles that are big in 1/1 scale in a smaller scale than 1/64, not bigger. A bogus scale spec? Did they mean "1/68"? Wheel-wise, it seems to be outfitted more for city traffic than trail busting. "I don't see any dirt on those rims, that's for sure." Maybe they had it washed on the way over, Officer. "Woulda been nice of them." Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:40 PM.

Really?! After what's happened on SoCal's highways in recent rain events, you think the boat might be superfluous? I'll bet some folks on Hwy 58 a couple weeks back wished they had a boat.....

If you take the boat off I think you have to deal with holes in the roof, although, you could fit some sort of off-road style roof rack to hide them.....of course then you'd have to deal with the street wheels, and add the mud splatters.

Hi, guy64 and Bert! I was hoping you two'd show up here. ![]() As for those "odd" wheels, they did appear on quite a few models at the time. They showed up a little later than the other style. I found two of the green versions of the MERCEDES-BENZ ML 430 each having the different styles: ![]()

Hardly sprinkled here. It was that annoying kind of "rain" that sprinkles just enough to put water spots on your car, but not nearly enough to rinse it off.

Hey, Mark! Thanks for the clarification. I always wonder why they'd come up with an additional wheel design that's only slightly different than what's already available. Isn't it expensive to tool up a new design? Edited by guy64, Nov 3 2015, 10:34 PM.

Seems like the eight-dot era saw more than its share of castings with opening doors...![]() "You can always find something to complain about, can't ya?" Who's complaining, Officer? Besides, if I wanted to complain about something I'd complain that the car is only 1/67. "See? SEE?" You know, he may be a cop, but I never thought Bert would go all "blog police" on me. At 1/61, it's just a leeeeetle too big...![]() ... but this BMW 5 Series sure is pretty, anyway. And since the front doors open Bert could get inside and see if his feet can reach the pedals! Bet they could, even if it is a tad oversize. Well, Officer? "You know kid, for some reason, my knees are kinda stiff today." Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:44 PM.

Another MB riding on "Eagles"...![]() Though the casting is stated to be 1/63, the wheels still seem a bit big. But it's so ORANGE, I can live with it. "A little late with the 'ORANGE', aren't you, kid?" In the world of cars, Officer, it's never too late for ORANGE. Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:49 PM.

One of our favorites from the 8-Dot era...![]() MB seems to like "1/63" for their scale figure when they make a Camaro. Not always, but more than other scales. But it's a favorite anyway. Too bad there's a rough spot in the front edge of the hood. "Looks like somebody got a little heavy-handed with their flash removal tool." Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:50 PM.

A type of vehicle that MB does so well...![]() If only they'd done it slightly smaller (it's 1/60). "No problem, kid. It's a van. Nobody'll notice it's too big." But it's supposed to be a minivan. "MINI van? Whoever heard of such an idea?" Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:52 PM.

Another fine use of those ribbed tires...![]() ...and another near miss with the scale (1/63). Otherwise, this Dodge Dakota is done quite well. "That's ok, kid. When I put the words "Dodge" and "truck" together, I expect to see something big." Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:54 PM.

Interesting that you would make that connection with a red El Camino, daniel60. I bought my red '71 Elky for the express purpose of hauling my sound equipment around.

Not, sure, but we have here something that I think showed up early in the TYCO era...![]() "Now why would you think that, kid?" Well Officer, it has a lot to do with that tampo on the side. "What? That silver trim is just like Chevy did them." Not those, the swish thing below those. "Oh. You mean the reddish/pinkish-over-white swish thing that clashes with that nice aqua/blue." Yeah, Officer. That thing. "I see what you mean, kid." Where are you going, Officer? "Gotta get a fresh citation book. Be right back." Edited by guy64, Jul 18 2017, 12:59 AM.

Now, here's another lost opportunity...![]() ... to do tampoes right. We think this '55 Chevy would be so much better without the over-sized "Bel Air", and with the trim done in silver instead of white. But, MB did a clever thing by making a body casting that can be either a hard-top or a convertible. Good job on that, MB. "So, so close..." Edited by guy64, Jul 8 2017, 08:58 PM.

For a while there, Matchbox fell victim to CTS...![]() ... Crazy Tampo Syndrome. Too bad for this Chevy Tahoe. The very nice dark metallic red paint is mostly covered by an unsightly splash of white, with yellow edges added. Can't imagine what they were thinking. Though I wouldn't care to own a real SUV, this is one of my favorite MB castings. Even at 1/67 scale, it lends a nice "presence" to the streets of Bert's world. I also prefer the clean lines that Chevy used in this era, before Dodge instigated the "big ugly grill" trend that almost everybody now follows. "I see you already removed the hood tampo, kid." That's right Officer, now you can see yourself in that shine! "So get to work on the sides, will ya? It looks like it crashed through a wall of hot marshmallows."
