1/64 again...

Posted Image

... and this time the Lexus GS430 is red. (Just in case your screen is set for gray scale and you haven't noticed.)

The usual smart things prevail; the right scale (1/64), the right tamps, the right color glass... I could go on, but you get the idea.

"It's not blue, but I like it anyway, kid."

Well, they can't all be blue, Officer. (But I wish they were all 1/64.)

Can't do Lexus without doing Infinity...

Posted Image

Not if you're going to cover popular Asian cars, anyway. And since this G37 is another 1/64 rendering, we can compare it against the Lexus in the previous post.

MB followed the same realistic approach with this coupe, thankfully: Tamps used for detail (not for decor), glass color believably tinted, interior color appropriate--and the wheels are the same as on the Lexus!

"I like the color of this one more, kid."

Just as we all expected, Officer.

A very Toyota-ish color on this Prius...

Posted Image

It's very similar (slightly lighter) to the color a certain relative's Corolla. They had to special order the color, which is one of the most expensive ways to buy a new car. (They could have bought any new Corolla already on the lot for a substantial discount from the sticker.)

It's a nice, realistic color. Once again we see MB going "Route Realistic" on a car seen frequently here in SoCal. No-nonsense choices ruled the day.

If only...

"Yeah, I know, kid. If only it was 1/64 instead of 1/62."

We'll just have to enter it in the "near miss" file, Officer.

Not only blue, but a HONDA too...

It's hard to believe MB retired this casting after only two years of production. It's not like it was ever a peg-warmer; this is the only copy I've ever found. Kinda strange, really.

And except for a slight overshot on the scale (1/62), they did such a nice job on the Insight. Paint, interior, tamps, glass, wheels... everything.

Speaking of those wheels, these are a nice variation on MB's "6-flat-spoke" design. These are a smaller-than-usual wheel with a higher profile tire, and the wheels are chrome instead of satin silver. Sure wish I could have found the other versions of this car.

"Oh well kid, you got the best of the colors, anyway."

I knew you'd appreciate that, Officer, but I still don't get the short run. You'd think MB would have produced this at least as long as they did the Prius.

"I dunno, kid. Apparently somebody at MB didn't have much insight."

A Prius with smaller wheels like the Honda Insight...

Posted Image

... but this time the wheels are silver, not chrome.

And once more we have great tamps, paint, interior, glass color. On top of that, MB was making enough of these things that even I could find them on the pegs.

"Kinda makes you wonder if they don't like you anymore, huh, kid?"

They're toying with me, Officer. TOYING, I say!

Does everybody like those hybrid-ish 6-spoke wheels with the flat spokes...

Posted Image

?

Hope so, because MB uses them a LOT! Even on non-hybrids.

Not that they look bad; they look pretty good. They go well with the VW Caddy. And MB did well with the side graphics on this "carpet cleaner" version. For some reason, there were a lot of these warming the pegs for weeks at a local Target. That surprised me. Must not be a lot of carpets in those little tiny houses. Or they just don't get dirty. Or the little tiny people in them don't care if their carpets are dirty. Or maybe they just get new carpeting when the old carpets get dirty. In any case, they have no excuse for dirty carpets.

"Has MB done a carpet installation company version of this, kid?"

Not that I know of, Officer. But I sure like this version, with the blue/orange/white graphics on that vaguely blue silver paint. MB also tamped great details into the headlights. (No tail light tamps, tho.) All things considered, it's a winner.

Yet another good service version of the VW Caddy...

Posted Image

Nothing subtle about this color. Any business operating these would be noticed quickly.

Once again MB did a good job, though they didn't do any elaborate detailing of the head lights this time (as they did with the carpet cleaner version). The lights are at least "there". You see them; those silver areas above the front bumper. But once again, no tail lights.

"Are these businesses trying to get cited?"

I doubt it, Officer. Tell you what, why don't you take a break while I "talk to" these guys? (Now where did I put that red Sharpie?)

Once again, the yellow got me...

Posted Image

MB's variations of Deep Yellow are hard for me to pass up.

Not that I haven't done so when the color is found on a casting I can't use. And after buying several versions over the years, I had decided that I really didn't need any more versions of MB's Range Rover Sport. But see, MB had the wisdom to render the thing in 1/64 scale. When it showed up in this color, what was I supposed to do? Leave it there?

Besides, they made the right call on every other decision there was. It even has tail light tamps.

"It's ok, kid. I don't mind seeing another 1/64 Range Rover on the lot. They're always clean."

Yeah Officer, innit funny how the owners never seem to get these things dirty?

We already had the red Premier Edition, but...

Posted Image

... there's something about getting a MB for a buck.

This was also the second version of the '70 Elky that I found with these wheels. Tires are slightly big, but the wheels suit the casting nicely.

Even though the casting is listed as 1/69 (which probably applies only to its length, we suspect), it's "one of those"; a casting we just gotta have when we find a version that's not already in the fleet. If MB had made it accurately 1/64, I'd probably have grabbed every copy I came across, even if it had stupid-colored glass.

"Hey kid, didn't you promise me we'd do a load check the next time one of these rolled onto my lot?"

Sorry Officer, I don't think this one has air shocks. Besides, I can't find the Squashed-Up Lincoln.

Just when Bert thought the Bugs were done...

... this "old" New Beetle cabrio shows up.

So we get to see how "hybrid style" wheels look on this VW. Not bad, I guess, and I certainly don't wish to be perceived as being ungrateful for having dodged the flower wheel bullet once again, so... :woot:

Actually, except for the over-scale (1/61) and the "invisible" windshield, there's lots of good stuff: No strange glass color, realistic (but still attractive) colors inside and out, even has little turn signal tamps in front. All-in-all, not a bad model.

"You've been getting a bit spotty lately with these postings, kid. Busy or something?"

Yeah, you could say that Officer. But you're running low on MB pix anyway. What does that suggest to you?

"Well uh, um... that tells me, uhh... I'm likely to get 'struck' by Lightning?"

If by "Lightning" you mean JL, Officer, that's doable, but I was hoping you'd say "pose for more pix". I guess we'll have to take what we can get. :(

Not fond of brown cars, but...

Posted Image

... I guess this isn't actually brown, is it? More like bronze? Ish?

Anyway, I like it, so it can't be brown. I'd hate it if it was brown. :D I saw a trio of real Bentley Continental GTs at an auto show in 2012. One of them was this color. Couldn't get that close to it--within ten feet--but I could see the car well enough to know MB nailed the color on this version. The interior color is quite believable, too. Glass and tamps are perfect, once again. If MB had made it 1/64... oh wait! They DID!! :woot: :woot:

We're so glad MB made enough of these to go around. At least I didn't have any trouble finding it. Not a peg-warmer, but available.

"Well kid, I'm a lot closer to this Bentley than ten feet, but that's not gonna do me any good with getting the keys, is it?"

You're getting smarter, Officer. Cynical, but smarter.

Didn't think it should be this big...

Posted Image

When I first saw MB's take on the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, I was sure it was outside our scale window. Had to be 1/57 or bigger, I thought. But MB specs it at 1/62! :o

Still, knowing how MB has been playing a little fast and loose with scale specs, I was skeptical. But I bought one anyway, just so Bert could get a look. When I saw the real thing I could see that the car is bigger than I thought. It became apparent that MB's spec could very well be accurate. Bigger than 1/64, definitely, but 1/62 rings true with this one. Anyway, Bert's intrigued at having a "ricer" in the fleet.

"Appreciate the look-see, kid, but once again you make me guess. Still avoiding the micrometer and Wiki, I see."

And Officer, you're still avoiding the HQ back lot and the camera, I see...

More blue for Bert...

Posted Image

... and more 1/64 as well!

For a while there, it seemed like MB was doubling down on 1/64 scale (assuming accurate specs). Even more amazing was the fact that I could find these $1 wonders on the pegs!

"Those were the days, huh kid?"

(Sigh.) Yes Officer, those were.

"Burning the midnight oil again, aren't we, kid? What's with the late post?"

Well, as a matter of fact, Officer, I was out shopping for diecast today. Found some good stuff, too."

"Oh yeah? Like what, kid?"

Sorry Officer. You hafta stand next to them to find out what they are. ;)

The MB Mercury Sable wagon gets the "country squire" treatment...

Posted Image

... thanks to a '90s movie remake of a '70s sitcom.

Haven't seen the movie and seldom watched the sitcom, but I don't think the Brady family car was a Ford/Mercury. Anyway, somehow, the lime green body kinda 'works' with the faux-walnut side paneling. If only I could remove the "Brady Bunch" from the hood without damaging the paint. Then it would be almost perfect.

"'Almost perfect'? Wudda-ya mean, kid?"

It's 1/63, scale, Officer. That's what I mean.

"Oh."

Once again; realistic, gorgeous, and wun/six-teeee-four! MB has never done better for a buck, have they?

"You'd think at least one of these people would let me take just a little demo ride, just for fun, wouldn't you?"

Probably worried you'd get spoiled, Officer, and want a B&W version.

Bert was leery of having this on the lot...

Posted Image

... but we got it here before it was put into service, so, no dirt.

Generic as it is, the Skidster is a decent model, depicting a Bobcat or other small skid loader quite well in 1/64. This is the FE. Matchbox has deployed the casting in many other liveries. Of course--since it's generic--it's always been easy to find.

"Kid, you keep bringing these scoop-up type things onto my lot, and yet my desk is still a mess."

Officer, the Captain said you must bring your trash down to the lot. They won't let anybody drive one of these up to the 3rd floor.

"Oh. Well, never mind, then."

It's outside our "scale window"...

Posted Image

... underneath the window's lower edge of 1/67, actually.

But it's a taxi. Our scale window can sometimes be stretched at the bottom for taxis. They can go "upstage" on the layout where they don't readily appear to be undersize. Plus, this "Star Car" edition of the MB 1/69 scale Ford LTD was found NIB way after its 1992 release. Another $2 train meet bargain.

"Nice catch, kid. But it still didn't entice Ernie to show up."

Yes, Officer, he seems even more camera-shy than you've been lately."

Bert hasn't seen many of these...

Posted Image

In fact, I think this is the only one.

At 1/59, it broke the top edge of the scale window. But I had to have at least one example of the casting so Bert wouldn't think I was being "scale paranoid" or something.

See, Officer? It is too big.

"Well okay, okay, kid. But you do get a bit suspicious about scale 'n things, whether these are really 1/64 or not."

ME? You're the one who's all "Mr. strictly-scale-or-not" fussy about it.

"Yeah, but I'm a 1/64 scale pro. You're just an amateur."

Wait... you're a "1/64 scale pro"? You get paid for this?

"Don't I? Well, if I don't, now you know why I don't show up that often."

So, the mystery is solved... :o

MATCHBOX! (What else?)

The K111 Missile Launcher is one of those that I know I'd have wanted when I was a kid, had I been a kid when it was made. (I wasn't.)

It's just so cool in so many ways; a missile launcher that actually fires missiles, a retracting missile bay, even a RADAR antenna that rotates when you push the vehicle around. (I'd have worn ruts into the carpets with the thing because of that feature alone. :toy: )

Still, I'd also have lost all the tiny missiles, probably. So, it's good that I found this one as an adult (Ebay). It's missing the upper insignia sticker on its right side, but other than that it's complete. Still has all its missiles carefully hidden away under those black covers.

"Missiles? This thing carries missiles?!?"

That's right, Officer. Launches them, too.

"WHAT? And you didn't even try to get me a tour of this thing?"

Officer, if you think the Bentley and Jag owners that come here are skittish about their prized rides, you ain't seen nothin'. These military types are positively anal. I don't think they trust you to keep your hands off the buttons.

"But... but, kid... those high-backed seats look so comfy..."

This one is labelled "K-13-2" and "K-114" underneath the cab. Found at a train meet, the box was a little compromised, but the transporter itself is like new.

"Good thing it's clean, kid. Those eight wheels would carry a lot of mud."

No worries, Officer. This transporter does most of its traveling on the deck of a flatcar.

This model in this exact same color has a lot of sentimental value to me.

When I first met my new girlfriend (now, 7 years later, my wife), it was like our fourth or fifth date when we went to a store and of course I checked out the diecast section and got some to myself. She suddenly was like "I want that one!" and pointed at this VW. I bought it for her, and she kept it in mint condition. And now it is one of the centerpieces of my collection. I had to let her to decide where in the showcase this VW sits (of course it is in the very center of it!).

It doesn't seem to be too easy to get one nowadays without paying ridiculously.
