Let's take another excursion into Generic Land...![]() ... in a police unit this time. With this one, we have another concession to cost-cutting (the reason for generics, after all): The old light-bar-as-part-of-window-insert feature. Once again, the window glass lost to the light bar. "Dag-nabbit, I hate that!" As do I, Officer. "If the glass was uncolored, I coulda just had you Sharpie the light bar with whatever color I needed!" Hey! I would have donated my time and the Sharpie, Officer. "Why do they do this stuff?" Try not to think about it. Go look at that nice opening trunk they gave you. And look how well they matched the color of the plastic deck lid to the paint on the car! That doesn't happen often, you know! "Yeah, that is nice. Hey, what's this in here, a sobriety kit? Cool!" And there's something else to be thankful for, Officer: No flower wheels! "Yeah, that's always a plus. But what's with these mud tires?" I guess they thought you might need to chase somebody through mud, Officer. "Pfft! As if. Drought's gotta end, first. Those tires are gonna make a horrible racket going up I-5 at 120 mph." The scream from that tread will supplement your siren quite nicely. Besides, on the 5 Freeway through L.A.? When can anybody get up to 40 mph, let alone 120 mph? "Oh, hush."

Let's forget mud tires and generics for a while. How 'bout something with a fizzy motif...![]() This '57 Corvette is nicely proportioned, but at 1/58 (and it may be even bigger) it's outside our usability window. Too bad, too. MB captured the look of the car quite well for a $1 toy. It even has a good stance; better than some castings that are 4x as much. "Well, I could always imagine it as a Cadillac Corvette, if I imagine real hard." Don't strain yourself, Officer. Besides, the car has since been given to a friend who collects Coca-Cola stuff. You won't be seeing it again. "Oh. Probably just as well." Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 07:20 PM.

Now that light bars are clear on actual emergency vehicles, miniature replicas can have "clear" windows again! Woohoo! Makes me fantasize that all our (collectors) complaining about Matchbox cost-cutting 'messing up' the windows by making them dark red or dark blue, changed the emergency lighting industry to produce clear lenses on their current products, with the colors coming from the lights themselves rather than the tint of the plastic casing, simply to come into line with diecast model collectors' collective desires! Diecast changed reality! Yay! By the way, I've never tried sharpies to color the lenses of my clear lightbars......I went out of my way and bought paint for that purpose...clear red and blue enamels. Six of one and half a dozen of the other? Now if we can only prevent (eliminate) clear/see-thru plastic roofs on cars....unless, of course, there are actual cars on the streets (other than Popemobiles) with clear roofs.... |

I don't usually care for green as a car color, but this...![]() ... is a really nice green! Neither am I fond of SUVs in the real world, but BMW's X5 is pretty cool as SUVs go, so in our toy car world they're ok. Especially since MB seems to have made their rendering close to 1/64. At least it looks like it to me. And Bert, I think. And then they did this way cool Superfast edition! "Kid, what's keeping you from taking the thing out of the case, measuring it, and Googling the real thing?" Oh, I dunno, Officer. Probably the same thing that's making you hide from the camera.

The 8-Dot era was very educational for us...![]() ... because of all the MB models of cars we'd never heard of. Such as this Vectra, which is nice, but a little big at 1/59. So, Bert will need to imagine it a bit smaller. "Ah-gain?..."

Keep the pictures coming! In regards to the BMW X5, I suspect if you did compare measurements, that the Matchbox would come in smaller than 1/64. The X5 is a fairly large SUV, but with Bert standing next to the Matchbox, it looks to be more like the size of a BMW X1 or Ford Escape. |

A favorite casting gets special treatment...![]() ... although the chromed-over glass has us wondering. As I recall, this was one of post-'80s MB's first efforts at doing "deluxe" versions of existing $1 castings, wasn't it? Good idea MB, especially with this 1/63 Camaro; a model deserving of upgraded wheels if there ever was one. But the chrome glass? Why? To hide an interior left empty to cut costs? "Cutting costs? Chroming plastic isn't all that cheap, is it?" There are some attrition costs, from what I've been told, Officer. Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 09:10 PM.

Another casting goes "deluxe"...![]() ... and the wheels/tires are kinda w-i-d-e for it. Nice, but too wide for the car. Looks like it should have flared wheel arches or some such alteration. They also did that chrome glass thing again. Very strange. "The sealed-up doors are making me wonder about this one. Yoosta be able to get into these AMGs." Time to break out the slim-jim, Officer? "Slim-jim? Kid, this'll take a Sawzall." Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 09:13 PM.

That one has an interior; it should be black, but it might be light grey. I've taken one apart before. Also, anyone who doesn't like stuff that's about 1/58-1/60 can send it my way, that's the scale I prefer toy cars to be in (1:64 for models, but toys can be bigger). Thanks for the info, funeralxempire. (I assume from your quote of me that you're referring to the '95 Camaro.) I'd post the next entry but photobucket is down right now. None of the pix are appearing here and I can't get into my own PB account. I really am warming up to the idea of dumping PB. One of these days, ONE OF THESE DAYS...

PB must have gotten back online by the time you got there, funeralxempire. PB is getting more "iffy" every day. But you know, somehow, I sense that we won't have to put up with PB much longer... If Bert was worried about that Benz with the chromed windows. This should put him at ease... ![]() It even has 8-dot wheels! "Whoa! Now that makes me feel better! Look at all that clear glass! I can see right into the thing!" And that's not all, is it, Officer? "Oh no. It even has opening doors! Which means I can get innit! Which means you... probably... don't have the keys, do you?" Do I ever have the keys, Officer? "Sigh."

The 1998 Camaro from the 2K Olympics 5-Pack...![]() ... painted a stunning shade of... uh, salmon? No, wait... salmon? "Kinda strange, alright. Don't like salmon, huh?" Actually, grilled, smoked salmon is quite tasty, especially if it's fresh. But the color on a car is... well... "They coulda just done the thing white overall, then put the blue accents and the logo on that. Wouldn'ta needed the white tampo that way." Yeah, they coulda. And they coulda left the blue color out of the windshield, too. "Now don't get me started..."

Let's kick that salmon memory with a splash of red...![]() MB's rendering of the full-on retro Mustang Concept is quite decent, though a bit big at 1/62 (per the base). Hard to believe it's been well over ten years since this concept was unveiled. "Ten... years? Have I been around that long?" Oh you've been around a lot longer than that, Officer. "But... I don't feel old. A little dusty, maybe." Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 09:32 PM.

One of our favorite castings again, this time with only a little bit of salmon...![]() Plenty of blue, though! Um, sorry about the yellow glass, Officer. "Sigh. One of the few, uh, customs in our collection...![]() "What'd you customize this with, a hammer?" Officer, this once belonged to a nephew who altered this camper with his teeth. I had intended to remove the crunched camper shell to make what was left into a nice, stock pick up. But now that the nephew has a son of his own, well... Let's just say my perspective has changed. No scale is shown on this one, but could the body be the same casting that was used on that repainted Ford 4x4? Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 09:37 PM.

Looks like it. Obviously the base changed for the lifted version, but the plate on the tailgate of my lifted is COU 113 which looks like what is n the front of there and the holes in the bed for the rollbar seem appropriate for a snap in camper. |

The "New Superfast" edition of the Jeep Grand Cherokee...![]() ... has lost the inflatable boat. Apparently the owner is not so much the outdoorsy type. The blingy wheels sure don't convey a mud-stomping attitude. And though I'm not crazy about this color on a real car, I love it when MB uses such a realistic color like this on their models. Well, every now and then, anyway. "Mmm, well, I'd prefer a shade of blue, myself." Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 09:39 PM.

Time to visit Bert's newer neighborhood...![]() ... and what better way to arrive at the back lot of Bert's police headquarters than with MB's black 1969 Camaro hard top from the Burger Zone 5-pack? At 1/62 scale (per the base) Matchbox got us a wee bit closer to 1/64 with this one, relative to the 1/61 convertible, anyway. Besides that move in the right direction, there's so much about this casting that sits well with me and Bert. For one thing, it's a Camaro; a '60s Camaro at that! For another, it came as part of a themed 5-pack centered around our favorite food; the hamburger. The car is well-proportioned, capturing the car's "attitude" in a very realistic way. Matchbox added interest to the subject by tooling two versions of the casting. This one features the simple, exposed headlight option that Chevrolet offered in '69. Another version features the "hide-away" headlights available on the more expensive Camaro variants. (We still need to find that one!) Veeeeeery clever, MB! I might have chosen less BMW-ish wheels for it, but these still beat flower wheels by a long shot. "Haven't seen any other versions of this casting in a long time, kid. What gives?" That's a question for Mattel, Officer. Edited by guy64, Jul 11 2017, 09:42 PM.

Another entry from the Burger Zone 5-Pack...![]() ... as the "BZ" on the tail reminds us. Mixed thoughts on this one. The 1970 Plymouth 'Cuda is one of my favorite cars from that era, so I'm happy that MB did the car. It's a little big at 1/62, but as we all know, MB can be a smidge "off" with their scale figures, so this one's within an acceptable margin of error. But there's something more subtle that doesn't seem quite right with the rendering. Besides being too high off the ground, there's a shortened, "puggishness" to the car's look (mostly at the front end) that doesn't quite convey the look of the real car. Too much "Matchbox stretch" to the width, maybe? "Maybe, kid. But, hey! It sure is blue enough!" No other way to describe the color, nope. So, even with its flaws, we'll still take it!
