We seldom buy 5-packs, but sometimes...

... if there's at least 3 castings in the group that we like, a fun theme just may get us.

"Looney Toons" is a pretty fun theme. I'm not sure what a '98 Camaro convertible has to do with Bugs Bunny, but I like the car. For some reason, this is the only yellow version of the casting I've seen, and I can always remove the tampo if I want it plain.

"Remove Bugs?"

It's just a tampo, Officer.

"Well, just make sure I'm not around when you do it. Poor Bugs. (Snif)"

The early Road Runner cartoons are among my favorite WB 'toons...

Posted Image

... although I identified more with Wyle E. Coyote than with the Roadrunner.

And if you're gonna have a yellow Camaro with a WB character on it, why not have a yellow Jag with another WB character on it?

"Didn't those two come in the same 5-pack?"

Yeah! That too!

"But the Camaro is 1/63, and the Jag is 1/62."

You just had to remind me of that, didn't you.

"Well, you're always telling me to 'be real'..."

Oooooo-KAY! Another example of one of our favorite castings...

Posted Image

... in a color combination that has us baffled.

I have no idea what to call that body color. My first impression was "metallic mud", but that's an insult to mud. Could it have been a paint mix gone awry, or an "end of day" color where they took all the paint they had left over at the end of a day, mixed it all together, and... this?

I can hear the conversation: "Don't worry, we can sell that. Just tamp a cartoon character over it. I know... Daffy Duck! He won't mind."

The bumper/grill/interior is...maroon. Could that be a reference to Daffy being an "ultra-maroon"? I know Bugs referred to another character as an "ultra-maroon", but I think that was a certain bull Bugs was fighting. Did Daffy ever call anyone an "ultra-maroon"? I don't remember.

"Well kid, just be glad that..."

I know, I know... no flower wheels, right Officer?

"Hey! Any time we escape flower wheels is a time to celebrate, innit?"

I wonder if--before these colors were picked--somebody at Mattel may have been "celebrating" a little too much.

I'm beginning to wonder if this should be a contest.

The "Name That Color!" contest. I dunno...

Back in the early 2000s there was a gathering place for diecast car hobbyists; I think it was on Usenet or some-such. Somebody had bought a HW car at a swap meet (or maybe it was Ebay) that had been "customized" by being slathered in several colors of nail polish. It was so ugly--in a folk art sort of way--and garnered so many comments that a "World's Ugliest Custom Contest" was initiated. There were a couple dozen entries. It was pretty funny. Dunno what ever happened to that group.

Anybody else remember that?

These Loony Tunes color combinations could get pretty wacky...

This must've come in the same WB "Back in Action" 5-Pack as the previous three. At 1/59, there's no other reason I'd have spent money on it, especially in these colors. Strange thing is, I like each of these colors separately, but this combinations is...

I mean, Taz is funny, but I think Foghorn Leghorn said it best, "There's sumthin' kinda YYEEEAAUUUGH about..."

"Yeah, but he was talking about a kid who's never played baseball, remember?"

Oh, I remember alright!

I don't remember the Ugly Custom contest but there was a Usenet group called "rec.toys.cars". Perhaps that is what you're thinking of.

That sounds familiar, Chris. I remember it was early in my own internet experience, hadn't been online for more than a year when I came across it.

That was shortly after our departure from AOL, which was around 1999. (Man, that seems like only yesterday, yet so long ago.)

Bugs Bunny has been found on more than one WB series Matchbox car...

Yeah, I know. Flower wheels. I had already learned to hate them before this version of the VW Concept 1 was issued, but see, it's a Bug: The "old" New Beetle (as opposed to the current "New" New Beetle), and Bugs are kinda obligatory if they are even close to 1/64. (1/61 is close enough for a Bug.) Paint it red, and well, it better not be left behind. That's a wife-unit policy.

"At least the glass isn't a weird color. Makes it easy to appreciate the lime green interior (smirk)."

Thanks for mentioning that, Officer.

... purple.

It came with side tampoes, which I removed almost immediately. Since I'm not all that crazy about purple on cars, I had plans to dye this 1/63 Camaro another color, but what color? I can't decide

I once had a dark blue car which I put into purple dye. It came out cobalt blue. VERY nice! I wonder what I'll get if I put this purple car into blue dye.

Cobalt purple?

"Just dye the thing black, and I'll drive it around."

You've already got several Camaro police units to choose from, Officer.

"Oh. Yeah. I forgot."

Time for FOOD again...

Although, the hamburger isn't just a food, it's a whole food group! :D

Which makes the Burger Zone all the more worthy to be the focus of a 5-Pack and two different playsets! :woot: This VW T1 came from a 5-Pack. Good thing, too. Had it been offered as a single, I might have left it behind. Bert knows why.

"You hate flower wheels that much, huh?"

They can be a deal breaker, yes. Even when the deco pertains to burgers and even when said burger deco is plastered on to a seldom found (for me) casting like this. But it tagged along as part of a 5-Pack, so home it came.

"That's amazing"

Yeah, well, even more amazing is the fact that--had MB done the thing in 1/64 instead of 1/58--its homecoming would have been guaranteed even as a single; flower wheels and all.

"Even without the burger on the side?"

Officer, done in 1/64, it could have mac and cheese on the side (( :P )) and I'd still have brought it home.

"You know, that yellow paint does sort of..."

Now stop right there, Officer.

I just ogled that Burger Zone 5-pack at the local antique mall yesterday. Might have paid it no nevermind if I hadn't seen earlier mention of it in this thread.

Didn't buy it....it wasn't what I was after....but kinda cool seeing something in real life I first saw here!

You saw that 5-Pack at an antique mall? And by that I assume you mean the mall itself wasn't so old, it was the stuff in it that was "old", right? How much $ did they want for it?

"Old" stuff. A 5-Pack that I bought new not so long ago... "old". OLD!

"Well, you know how that makes me feel, kid."

Old? You and me both, Officer.

It really depends on the burger itself. As a major food group, the much-maligned hamburger is found in a wide range of quality. Sure, living off nothing but Big Macs isn't all that healthy (tho it beats starving). But the burger I had at a local restaurant this afternoon is another story. Came on a wheat bun, with almost as much lettuce and tomato as a dinner salad, plus a couple other veges. The meat was good quality too; didn't have to be transformed into leather to be safe for consumption.

It's all about "balance".

"Yer makin' me hungry, kid. This isn't a food blog, y'know"

Sorry, Officer. (Urp.)

Ok, so we'll forget today's lunch. How about something totally unrelated, like...

... moving? Rental vans?

I don't think this Ford Transit van was supposed to be all that hard to find when it was a current model, but I still had a hard time finding it. When I did finally come upon this elusive 1/63 scale casting, I hesitated. Bert can guess why.

"Hmm, I don't know. What could have made you think twice before actually buying a casting that you had been searching for so long? Could you have been concerned about me drowning in Cool Blue Gatorade upon opening one of the doors?"

Sorry about the blue glass, Officer. But don't worry, none of the doors open.

"Good thing, too, that's a lotta Gatorade. I coulda been killed!"

Funny, I didn't realize it was 'new' to you when you posted the photos. I thought, well, isn't that interesting, I just saw these at Swifty's and here they are.....

I bought a couple of actually older singles out of that same display....the 15-year old Auto Chalet (#47) from around 1999 in a window box, and the No. 9D Cabin Cruiser or whatever the blue and white boat on it's trailer was called (loose, no box), from the mid-to-late 60s. Reasonably good prices.... better than currently on Amazon and ebay, and no shipping (but did have to pay sales tax......)

Oh, I forgot to notice how much he was asking for the 5-pack....but it wasn't too far off retail if I remember correctly. Had some items on sale for $3 to $5 in that booth.

Some ex-Corgi Matchbox...

This purchase was made fairly early in our "collecting" career. I didn't know the tooling's history at the time, but I did notice how it resembled Majorette's Chevy Blazer; rendering the same rectangular over/under headlight configuration. Interesting how Matchbox, Majorette and Corgi would get on the same page vehicle-wise in those days.

Hard as I tried to protect it, the antenna was eventually broken off. :(

"Never mind, kid. I've got this new thing called a 'cell phone'..."

No worries, b2young.

I bought the pack when it was a current issue. That was some time ago. (These pix aren't all that fresh. ;) ) I was just musing about how time "flies", or in this case "rockets past me to the outer galaxy".

It's one thing to see stuff from one's childhood referred to as "old" or "antique". But lately I'm seeing more and more stuff that was new when I was well into adulthood showing up on the webtoobs as having been found in "antique" stores.

Kind of a strange feeling.

For the Viper fans among us...

Posted Image

I remember when the Viper was introduced how radical it seemed, in that very over-the-top way that only Chrysler does. There was even a TV show under that name. Matchbox had to do the car. No way could they not do the car.

If only they'd done it 1/64 instead of 1/59. :beatit:

But besides that, nice as it is, there's something about MB's take on the car that isn't quite... quite...

"Quite right?"

Yeah, quite right.

"Give ya a hint: Round things."

Oh, yeeaaaah...

It wasn't Corgi. It was Kenner's Fast 111's from which that casting came:

Ah, I get it. Yes, I'm starting to realize I'm sort of an "antique" myself......and seeing so many Matchbox cars and trucks I bought when I was a kid--and as you note, in my adulthood-- on those antique store shelves does kinda rub it in.
