pj, my Japanese fire dept VW bug was a single, and was in a standard picture box that showed an unmarked red VW "1200LSE" with no red light on top....the box was one of the ones indicating 'foreign' car....with the German flag gracing the face. (I don't know if all 'foreign' Tomicas came in boxes with the country flag....)
Don't know if all of the F series boxes were with the flag showing, but I have a number of boxes from that era, and I think all mine do, as I recall each also has the model name in Japanese on one side of the box, and English on the other.

I'll do some box photos this weekend, and post them in each of the country specific threads. You can check the "British" thread where I already posted a few boxes from that era. The red and white boxes also posted there are from a later time, late 1990's and early 2000's, and by then I think they long since stopped doing the country flags, of course, by then they weren't designated as F series anymore either.
Ahhhh, was "F" series for "foreign"? I don't think I knew that.
Blair, I'm not sure if others call it F series or not, I just thought it was an easy way to describe it, but I always understood it to be for "Foreign", and the regular Japanese makes are the domestic series or models, although I think they were actually all the same series available together, just the "F" designated the make of vehicles that were not Japanese.

Here are some box pics, and one other German make I had and didn't realize it until I had boxes out for pics.

Here is the story on the F-series, as I was able to compile from several sources.
(Originally sourced from: 'The Tomica Story' by Steve Shaw, and Doug Breithaupt's Tales of Toy Cars website. Both sites are no longer online.)

Quote:

The F-Series was introduced in 1976. The 'F' in 'F' series stood for foreign vehicles - however this meant 'foreign' in the sense of foreign to the Japanese. During the first year there were eighteen models based on popular English, German, and American vehicles. The 'F' series came in distinctive blue and white packaging.

1977 saw the line expanded to thirty two models, including two vehicles from Italy.
In 1978, the number of foreign models increased to fifty-two, and included France.
In 1979, the 'F' series grew to seventy models.
By 1987, the foreign line was assimilated and consolidated into the domestic line. This change affected the numbering of the foreign line so that the 'F' prefix of the model number was eliminated and 80 was added to the remaining number - thus the foreign model 'F10' became #90 in the new consolidated line.

Excellent information Michael! I never knew any of this, especially interesting about them adding 80 to the old F series number, seems like it will really come in handy for future referencing. Thanks!

I like that Unimog, is it a 3" size model, and is that a set with the train car in tow?

The little boxy mint green Beamer is awesome too. I seen a lot of those going from Bad Tolz to Munich, Germany as a kid in High School.

Yes to both. That Unimog casting would fit in a standard Tomica box, but has only been issued (that I know of) with the train car as one of the "Tomica Long" series (#128).

Here's a pic I found online with somebody's fingers included, for reference.

Funny, that model appears to be in a greenish color when photographed, but in reality it´s blueish.

All i know is that the VW was part of a series along with many other models, that came in single blisters and was available in selected stores in Europe, not sure when, i´ve never seen them in stores. It is made in China.
I have purchased several models of this series online a few years ago, DLM´d all but one.

I'd love to have all those police cars you guys are showing. Great collections!

Ernst, I almost could have had the set that I believe that same VW Bus came with, from a mail order dealer many years ago,
best I recall he was asking $85 or $95 US dollars for the set back in the late 90s, but alas, I was too cheap,
and mainly excited about the Polizei bus at the time anyway, I probably should have gone ahead and included the set with my order. :duh: :D

:toy: I remember that set as well as some others with emergency vehicles in them - they were just to much out of my price range in those days - something about providing for your children and not your toy collection.

Hi John,
I believe you means this *world-policecar-set*, but it is not the set with the VW Bus Polizei.
The VW bus Polizei van was only in a 4-car set . The name from this set was anyhow some with *Germany...set*, but without more emergency-cars.
I have only bought the single VW Bus Polizei and the price was more than Doug to have to pay in the past for the complet set.
Today we can say to Doug, it was a mistake not to buy :(

Yeah, I probably missed a good opportunity in not getting the set, but I was really budget conscious about my collecting toy cars. What I did buy from the dealer then was this "American" set at that time, for a lot less, but learned later the Cadillac Police is not the right one for the set.
Anyways, from what I understood this is the same kind of set as that "German" set from the same era, but this is the "American" version.
