Today's car SUV of the day is Code 3 Collectibles' 1998 GMC Suburban.

Wikipedia

The Chevrolet Suburban is a full-size, extended-length sport utility vehicle from Chevrolet. It is the longest continuous use automobile nameplate in production, starting from 1933 for the 1935 U.S. model year, and has traditionally been one of General Motors' most profitable vehicles. The Suburban has been produced under the Chevrolet, Holden, and GMC marques until the GMC version was rebranded as the GMC Yukon XL. For most of its recent history, the Suburban has been a station wagon-bodied version of the Chevrolet pickup truck, including the Chevrolet C/K and Silverado series of truck-based vehicles. Several automotive companies in the United States used the "suburban" designation to indicate a windowed, station wagon type body on a commercial frame including DeSoto, Dodge, Plymouth, Studebaker, Nash, Chevrolet, and GMC. Chevrolet began production of its all-steel "carryall-suburban" in 1935. GMC brought out its version in 1937. These vehicles were also known as the "Suburban Carryall" until GM cut the name to simply "Suburban".

If it were not for Kay Bee Toys stores, I would not have my current collection of Code 3 Collectibles. The beautiful (and true 1/64) Suburban fire chief casting was released in a variety of different city schemes, with various light bars, but from what I recall, original retail price was $35-$40. Kay Bee Toys received surplus models and after a couple of price drops, they could be purchased for $7.99 (and later, they were clearanced for even less, but selection was very limited by then). I was originally more drawn to them because they were Suburbans, rather than because they were beautiful emergency vehicles (now, I appreciate them for both reasons). There were no small scale models of any Suburbans, of any generation, prior to this casting's release. The following year, Hot Wheels played "me too," and released their 1999 Suburban. The next generation Suburban / Yukon from 2000-2006 proved to be a far more popular subject matter for toy makers.

Wikipedia

The GMT400-based Suburbans were introduced in the 1992 model year. The similar pickup truck models had switched to the newer platforms in the 1988 model year. Both 2WD and 4WD models, designated "C" and "K", were offered, as well as half ton and three-quarter ton ("1500" and "2500") models. The base engine for all variants was the small-block 5.7 L (350 cu in) V8. The big-block 7.4 L (454 cu in) V8 was optional for the 2500 series. The optional 6.5 L Turbo diesel was available on all models - though rare on the 1500 series. 0-60 mph time for a 1995 Suburban was 9.3 seconds. City fuel economy was 13mpg and highway was 15. In 1996, highway fuel economy had improved to 17mpg highway.

:toy: I imagine a lot of collector's missed out on this one because of the original price point. I know, like Dean, I did not add any to my collection until Kay Bee had them and even then I was only able to get a few of them. They are very nice emergency vehicles and when I do come across one at an affordable price it is added to my collection.

Reminds me a lot of the current "Heroes" collection Fire Dept. Suburban, but the Code 3 version is a lot nicer!

They did quite an assortment of cities. I got several of the Suburbans but missed most of the fire trucks, they were nice but got expensive and hard to find.

I never did buy any of the fire trucks, but was actively trying to find some of the ambulances. I was able to pick up two or three of the E-350 ambulances for decent prices, but I have yet to be able to add any of the F-350 ambulances, which always seemed to hold their high prices, even today.

Support your local demo derby.

I saw a bunch of Code 3 models for sale last year at the St. Louis Farm Toy show but even then the prices were still higher than I wanted to pay. Really think some of the vintage Suburbans from the 60s and 70s would look great in 1/64. Greenlight or Autoworld would be ideal candidates.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
This casting reminds me of how LONG these Suburbans actually are.

I think Code 3 did an excellent job! Unlike most other emergency SUVs, this isn't just a casting of a civilian version with a light bar stuck on top. Code 3 went to the effort to add the equipment cabinetry to the rear, just like actual fire chief, EMS Supervisor, and rapid responder units usually have. Also, I just noticed the siren speaker "horns" under the bumper as well.

One I will have to get. Just what version is the confusing part--I guess whatever's cheap!

That was the nice thing about Code models - they were specifically made as emergency vehicles and not just something they could put red or blue lights on. One of the reasons they were so popular among fire rig collectors.

Great write up. I've always liked this model although prefer the smaller light bar.

AWESOME- I wish I had grabbed up more of these when they were around, especially on clearance. very hard to come by now and the few remaining out there aren't cheap. GREAT shots of 'em.

I know GL is doing a 1:43 50's suburban- and I've heard some conjecture about bashing them, but I haven't seen any yet. hopefully the 64 versions aren't far behind.
