As of this month, we now have two new McLaren P1's in 1:64 scale. The Hot Wheels came out last year and garnered a lot of attention. For many, it was among their favorite new models from Hot Wheels. But for me, it was the one that I was most disappointed by. With as complex a car as the P1 is, perhaps that's not fair to expect a mainline Hot Wheels to properly capture the details, but the main issue I had were the side vents in the doors. Or rather the lack there of, with a giant hole in their place and completely flat plastic from the interior doing the job of what should have been a three dimensional shape. So, when Kyosho announced they were doing the P1, I was very anxious to get it. Pictures had surfaced online of two versions, and I had thought that one was the Kyosho Minicar series and one was the Kyosho Originals series, but in a late surprise, what I thought was a Kyosho Originals was a Colourful Models. Colourful Models is a relatively new brand that started at the former factory that produced Kyosho's. When they first started making cars, they didn't have a brand name and people just referenced them as Kyosho OEM. With the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta that they released, they finally came up with a brand name of Colourful Models. So, former Kyosho factory, but completely separate company. From here on, I'll just call them CM, not to be confused with CM's, the company that released many wonderful rally cars 10 or so years ago. To date, CM has done several cars that overlapped with Kyosho models such as the Lamborghini Aventador and Ferrari F12 Berlinetta. In both of those cases, the CM was vastly superior. Another model they did was the Pagani Huayra, which is easily one of the very best models ever done in 1/64. So going in to this, I was expecting the Hot Wheels to be blown out of the water, the Kyosho to be nice, but the CM to be exceptional. Now on the pictures, and I'll get into some comments and verdicts. The Hot Wheels is easy enough to pick out, but for those not familiar with these new castings yet, the Kyosho has black wheels and black vent and detail work, while the CM has dark grey wheels and dark grey vent and detail work. Kyosho on left, CM in middle, HW on right. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The standout feature on the Hot Wheels is the rear spoiler. It's massive, but it's true to the real car. When deployed, the real spoiler stands up very tall, all the lines perfectly match the real one, and it gives the model a much more aggressive look. In taking these pictures, I have realized the Hot Wheels has grown on me considerably. The front end is really well done, with extremely deep front vents below the bumper, and it's the only model of the three that actually feature the razor thin tail lights that follow the swooping body. But the doors do still bug me, as it really needs to be three dimensional. It also needs tampos on the top of the door and above the rear wheels for the vents there. They are molded in to the body, but get lost without any paint to differentiate them. Now let's look at just the Kyosho and CM. A caveat before continuing. The CM photographs much better than the Kyosho. The paint looks much better in pictures with the smaller metal flake, while the Kyosho has very large metal flakes that pick up all the light in photographs. In hand, you can tell a difference, but the Kyosho is definitely still a very nice paint job. Metal flake aside, the CM paint is actually too thin and there are several spots where the metal shows through a little. It's a much nicer color, the smaller metal flake is nicer, but the thin paint makes it hard to declare the paint better. The vent work and detail work being dark grey also shows up much better in pictures than the Kyosho which is black, making it hard to see accurately how the lines of the black sections really look. Despite the lighter shade of grey showing better in pictures, both are equally well sculpted. Kyosho ![]() CM ![]() The headlights on the Kyosho have an extra bit of silver paint for definition. The CM headlights look pretty bad in the picture, but in hand look better, as the jaggedness you are seeing is behind the lens. But the Kyosho wins here. The front vent work and black portions of the bumper are slightly deeper on the CM, so it gets the edge there. Kyosho ![]() CM ![]() The black plastic on the Kyosho in the middle of the rear end where the exhaust is has a honeycomb texture, while the CM is smooth plastic. Plus one point for Kyosho. The exhuast looks better on the Kyosho, as the CM is slightly crooked. However the lower part does look better with the dark grey accents to break up the solid black, plus the license plate is a nice touch. Kyosho ![]() CM ![]() The roof and rear engine cover are nicer on the Kyosho. While the two colors on the roof of the CM is a nice touch, the center section of the roof is metal, vs. plastic on the Kyosho, so the Kyosho is able to get a lot finer with the detailed lines. The front hinges in the top of the door are also molded into the Kyosho while missing from the CM. The rear engine cover also looks nicer with the dark grey plastic instead of silver paint, plus the Kyosho has the P1 logo on the engine. And the plastic on the roof of the Kyosho is somewhat two toned, as some sections are gloss and some are matte finish. But in the above pictures is where you will notice the biggest difference that to me makes this a slam dunk win for the Kyosho. On the real P1, those big black holes in the sides of the doors with all that complex ventwork, the air actually enters above the door, right below the window. On the Kyosho, these vents are present and painted black to reflect that it's actually a vent. This is a very important part of the real car, as it explains the bulge in the door. There are also two vents above the rear wheels shaped like McLaren logos that feed into the rear brakes. While these are sculpted on the CM, they are not painted. When looking at it from above, you have two large vents on either side that are entirely unrepresented on the CM. Kyosho ![]() CM ![]() Both models have decently molded windshield wipers. The Kyosho has a little bit of extra tint that extends down where the rear view mirror would be, like real cars have. The mirrors on the Kyosho are metal and molded in with the body, while the CM are separate pieces. The CM mirrors look a little nicer, but I already broke one off and had to reglue it. Toss up between accuracy and durability. Kyosho ![]() CM ![]() The line flows from the top of the black door vents and follows through to directly intersect with the rear wheel is much more defined on the Kyosho. The line below that, in the bottom of the rear quarter panel is more sculpted on the CM. At the front of the door, where the middle section is tapered inward toward the front wheel below the top of the shoulder line that forms above it, the real car has a gap here. On the CM, that little gap is painted body color, while the Kyosho that little gap is black like it should be. Again, the actual doors themselves are equally well molded. Despite the black not showing well in pictures, imagine that carbon fiber vent you can clearly see on the CM on the Kyosho, they look the same in hand. This is where my biggest issue was with the Hot Wheels, so both models are nicely done in this regard. The CM rides a little too high as well. However, the wheels clearly win on the CM. They are exceptional, and also feature brake rotors and calipers that the Kyosho does not. Now, switching colors and it will make all of the above points seem more obvious. Since the orange shows much better on the CM than the Kyosho in pictures, switching to yellow, the Kyosho shows much better. I stuck with the orange for the above pictures since it's the signature color for the car and to match the Hot Wheels. But compare both yellows and all of the points will become more evident. The body itself is also slightly more accurate on the Kyosho, looking lower, wider and sleeker, while the CM looks slightly bloated by comparison. On the yellow, the lack of the vents above the doors (below the windows) and above the rear tires become more evident. ![]() ![]() So there you have it. Despite the nitpicking, the CM is still a great model. It is still collector quality, and very, very well done. But the Kyosho wins, and I wanted to highlight all the differences since I was so surprised by this given the track record so far of CM. I plan to pick up all the rest of the colors they release on it (so far, they have a light blue, white, black, and fuchsia also planned.) If Kyosho does the P1 in the Originals line, I'll pick up any other colors they do besides the orange and yellow. |

Nice writeup Ben. I am still waiting for my CM. I thought the CM would fair better in the matchup. |

I did too. And you'll still be happy with it. All the nitpicking isn't to say it's a bad model, it's still 100% worth getting. But it's definitely the first model that they've both done that I'd give the nod to Kyosho instead of CM. I'm curious what your opinion is once you get both, if you agree with my comments or if you prefer the CM. |

I prefer the paint on the CM for sure. I have the Kyosho already, we'll see about getting a CM. |
