Today's car of the day is Seba's 1985 Mitsubishi Colt / Mirage.

Wikipedia

The Mitsubishi Mirage is a range of cars produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi from 1978 to 2003 and again since 2012. The hatchback models produced between 1978 and 2003 were classified as subcompact cars, while the sedan and station wagon models, marketed prominently as the Mitsubishi Lancer, were the compact offerings. The Mirage has a complicated marketing history, with a varied and much convoluted naming convention that differed substantially depending on the market. Mitsubishi used the Mirage name for all five generations in Japan, with all but the first series badged as such in the United States. However, other markets often utilized the name Mitsubishi Colt and sedan variants of the Mirage have been widely sold as the Mitsubishi Lancer - including in Japan where the two retailed alongside one another. In the United States and Canada, the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the similar Plymouth-badged Champ and Colt. Later, the venture brought the Eagle Vista and Summit branded models which sold alongside the aforementioned.

I present a brand that has not yet had the honor of having a casting showcased for Car Of The Day. Seba was a brand out of Poland which only made a a half-dozen different castings in the 1980's and they were reportedly only marketed for sale within Poland. As a result, Seba models do not surface very often these days. Although quite crude, this Mitsubishi Colt / Mirage was once a grail for me, simply because of the subject matter, which no one else had offered. I finally found two Seba models in a group lot on ebay last year, and it included the Colt / Mirage I had wanted so badly. Of course, rarity means nothing to me once I own something, so I added color to the tail lights because little details like that make me happy. I would still love to add more Seba models to my collection someday if the chance comes along, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for more to pop up.

Wikipedia

Mitsubishi launched the second generation Mirage to Japan in 1983, again splitting the range into Mirage (three- and five-door hatchback, plus four-door sedan) and Lancer Fiore (four-door sedan) models. The Mirage was not sold in the United States by Mitsubishi until 1985. Mitsubishi licensed the "Mirage" name from Grand Touring Cars, Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona for use in the United States, as they already owned the rights to the name with the Mirage race car series. Dodge/Plymouth Colt-branded models initially came in three-door E, DL and RS Turbo models, four-door DL, and Premier (the latter with the base or turbo engine) and five-door E, with a DL five-door offered in Canada; an E sedan replaced the five-door for 1986, and the wagon (in DL trim only but with an all-wheel drive option) joined the line for 1987. Curiously, Mitsubishi marketed the Mirage only as a three-door hatch through its own American dealers despite the five-door model having repeatedly been rejected in favor of the Dodge Omni by Chrysler's marketing organization. The Mirage was available in Europe as the Colt.

:toy: Ouch - that is definitely a crude little toy car but...that is also a big part of the fun of collecting - especially when we find a miniature of a car not others make as well as a brand we don't have in our collection. I have heard of Seba but can't say I had ever really seen any until now. It is a great addition to your ever-growing collection Dean!

Dean that's a beauty and by a strange coincidence I just photographed mine
which I got from a friend I met up with last week. Not pretty but it will do for now.

I'd much rather have mine with the Mitsubishi hood sticker than the odd falcon sticker...

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
I 'm so happy that I didn't have a period in my life that I had to own an econobox hatchback. However, all the bad luck of owning a beater Renault Dauphine more than made up for it.
Crude casting, but the opening hatchback made me smile and classify this one as "worthwhile."

What's wrong with econo hatchbacks? Sometimes you just need to get there with a little cargo and don't need anything fancy. :P

Hmmm... Hatchbacks? I've had a few in the family over the years...

1) 1973 Chevelle Laguna station wagon
2) 1976 AMC Pacer
3) 1984 Buick Century station wagon
4) 1986 Plymouth Voyager minivan
5) 1999 Chevrolet Venture minivan
6) 2005 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx
7) 2006 Chevrolet Malibu Maxx

The Malibus were/are family cars primarily driven by my wife. When the '05 was totaled in 2013, she insisted on finding another Maxx, she loved the car so much. We went from a silver LT with 95,000 miles to the charcoal '06 LTZ we have now with only 44,000 miles on the clock for only $3K to pay beyond the insurance payout on the '05. Both cars have been all but trouble free, never once being left overnight for repairs. The current car now has nearly 90K on the odometer - LOTSA highway miles.

There is no stigma to owning a hatchback beyond what you perceive there to be. They are incredibly practical and haul more stuff more easily than the typical coupe or sedan. I can only imagine the minuscule trunk in a Mirage/Colt . This hatchback would be able to easily transport a kid to college with all the necessary gear.

The model? Hoo-boy is that sucker crude! But, as you say, it's the only game in town, and I have some Corvairs in my model/toy collection that aren't any better. Something is ALWAYS better than nothing.
