Today's car of the day is Greenlight's 1987 Jeep Wrangler

Wikipedia

The Jeep Wrangler is a compact and mid-size (Wrangler Unlimited models) four-wheel drive off-road and sport utility vehicle (SUV), manufactured by Jeep, and is currently in its third generation. The Wrangler is not a direct descendant of the World War II Willys MB or Willys civilian Jeeps (Jeep CJ) of the mid-1940s through 1980s, later produced by Kaiser-Jeep and by American Motors (AMC), despite this common misconception, and as illustrated by the factory dash plaques affixed to the last Jeeps (CJ-7) produced, that read "Last of a Great Breed – This collectors edition CJ ends an era that began with the legendary Jeep of World War II".

Outwardly resembling the Jeep CJ-7, the Wrangler, which was formally announced on May 13, 1986, was based on a new set of design parameters. "The product philosophy behind the two vehicles" Francios Castaing (AMC VP of Product Engineering) explained, "is completely different". Just like the Willys MB and the Jeep CJ, Wranglers continue to use a separate body and frame (although of a new design), rigid live axles both front and rear, a fold-flat windshield, and can be driven without doors. But its suspension, drivetrain, and interior were borrowed from the new Cherokee (XJ) model. The Wrangler debuted in 1986 as a new model to fill the void left by the discontinuance of the famous Jeep model (CJ), was revised in 1996, and completely redesigned in 2007. In addition to the model name Wrangler, each model received a designation corresponding to its generation: YJ (1986–1995), TJ (1996–2006), TJU's (commonly known as LJ's- 2004–2006 Unlimited models, or YJL, in the Egyptian owners manual.), JKU (2007–present Unlimited models) and JK (2007–present). Foreign military versions of the Wrangler have carried the J8 designation which was initially dubbed TJL when first produced at Arab American Vehicle's Egyptian plant.

This is from Greenlight's First Cut series and came paired with a raw Zamac Jeep with clear top mounted in a display case. Greenlight's modern Jeep Wrangler JK is objectively a better casting. And I prefer it in real life too. But of all the versions of the JK and the YJ that Greenlight has done so far, this is my favorite. As a child of the 80's, this is the Jeep I grew up with, and this is the paint job I liked best on it. The details on this really pop, from the logo on the spare tire, the hood graphics, and down to the excellent wheels with black paint on the holes and hubs that is lacking from the other releases so far. The First Cut series aren't sold in stores, and are slightly more expensive since it includes two cars and a nice base, but if you are a Jeep fan, this release is one you definitely want to get.

Wikipedia

The Jeep YJ, sold as the Wrangler in the United States, replaced the much-loved but slower-selling Jeep CJ in 1986 and was built in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, until the plant closed on April 23, 1992. Production was then moved to Toledo, Ohio, using the same plant that produced the Willys Jeeps during World War II. American Motors Corporation (AMC) had designed the new Jeep to be more comfortable on-road in an attempt to attract more daily drivers. It was a totally new design with a wider track, slightly less ground clearance, and more comfort. The YJ still had leaf spring suspension similar to that of the CJ – however the springs were wider, and the YJs sported trackbars and swaybars for improved handling. Despite the new grille, the body is very similar to that of the CJ7, and it is interchangeable with some major modifications. The YJ also was given a larger windshield over the CJ. The YJs are easily identifiable due to the rectangular headlights and the fact that the wiper blades rest on the windshield giving this version a distinctive look. The blades rested on the windshield due to the now wider arc of the blades to clean the larger windshield. These two changes were later removed when the TJ was launched 1996. 632,231 YJs were built through model year 1995, although YJs were still produced into mid-1996, bringing the total production number to 685,071 units. Despite its similar look to the Jeep (CJ) its design was new from the ground up and had more in common with the newer downsized Cherokee (XJ) model.

Definitely a nice little Jeep model. If I liked Jeeps, I'd try to find one and, if one were to fall into my lap I very well might grab it anyhow. But it's not the sort of thing I'd hunt down. I prefer my cars a bit more sporting, with a center of gravity a couple of feet lower than what this guy offers. Besides, roads are for driving and dirt is for gardeners.

I also prefer my cars to have sporting intentions, but I guess that's the same reason I like Jeeps. Still a blast to drive, just a different sport. They can't carve corners, but it sure is fun to play in the dirt. Well actually I prefer rocks, but you get the idea!

Although I am not a Jeep fan the beauty of this one makes me want to track one down for my collection. GL did a beautiful job on this model, the only thing that looks weird to me and I am not certain if its correct to the 1:1 is the way the roll bar meets the windshield.

Its a gorgeous model and again thanks for the time you take to share these models with us, to me I look forward to seeing whats going to be new everyday. This continuing series is one of the best die cast informational threads if not the best on the entire internet!

 This is a very nice model from GL and one sharp looking Jeep. I honestly think the last Jeep I rode in was the old fire dept. Jeep with a plow on the back for grain field fires back in the late '70's. Not a smooth ride but then again it was an old Army surplus critter. :D GL is coming out with a very nice variety of models and this Jeep is much appreciated in the collecting community.

The best release yet in my opinion. I'm waiting to get the two YJs in the next All Terrain release 3.

Definitely looking forward to snagging this one. I ordered the YJ from eBay that was in the North Shore Surf Shack set- while accurate I was a little underwhelmed with the tan top- didn't have much realism in the color/texture like they have achieved with the current body style Jeeps. I especially like the spare tire cover with the AMC logo here.

I like this version, and have ordered one, but still waiting on it to arrive. I really like the logo on the spare tire cover, too. I never thought we'd get a rectangle headlight Wrangler in 1/64, so the Greenlight casting was quite a pleasant surprise.
