Today's car of the day is Matchbox's 2003 BMW Z4 Roadster.

Wikipedia

The BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel drive sports car by the German car maker BMW. It follows a line of past BMW roadsters such as the BMW Z1, BMW 507, BMW Z8, and the BMW Z3. The Z4 replaces the Z3. First generation production started in 2002 at BMW USA's Greer, South Carolina plant, with production of both roadster and coupe forms.

During the era of Matchbox history in which this BMW was released, Mattel seemed determined to make all of the Matchbox windows as dark as could be, as if they were feeling pressure to match Maisto's model appearances. Many interiors were completely hidden from view during this era, except for the convertibles, which were still given windshields with highly illegal* levels of tint (*in most states). In addition to the windows, lighting details were often ignored. The front of this BMW looked horribly plain without any factory detailing, so I added some silver touches to the headlights and emblem. I probably should have dressed up the tail lights, as well, but never got around to it, since the burgundy paint was "close enough" for tail lights. For the variation collector, this version could also be found with a substantially larger BMW logo on the sides.

Wikipedia

The first-generation BMW Z4 was designated the E85 in roadster form and E86 in coupe form. From 2003 the Z4 Roadster is available as a 3.0i (3.0 L I6 with 231 hp), a 3.0si available with the new generation 3.0 L I6 with 265 hp, a 2.5si with a 2.5 I6 with 218 hp, a 2.2i with a straight-6 170 hp engine, or a 2.0i with a 150 hp 2.0 L I4. The Z4 coupe is available only in the high-performance 3.0si trim powered by the 3.0 L 255 hp I6.

Thanks Dean - I have always wondered about those smoke/tint windows on so many of the Matchbox cars of that era. It is to bad they didn't highlight the front and the back of this Bimmer - would have made for a sharp looking car.

Support your local demo derby.

Eye popping pics. My aunt and uncle have a Z3 they bought used over in Terre Haute, Indiana about 10 years or so ago. They still own it and drive it Florida once a year.

They don't really show up too well in the pictures, but these wheels have "Matchbox" in raised letting along the sidewalls of the tires. Remember when that was also a big thing Mattel was trying to push with the MB line?
