Today's car of the day is Hasbro / Funrise's 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.

Wikipedia

The Jeep Wrangler is a compact and mid-size (Wrangler Unlimited models) four-wheel drive off-road and sport utility vehicle (SUV), manufactured by Jeep, and is currently in its third generation. The 2007 model year brought a complete redesign of the Jeep Wrangler, and also a four-door model. The TJ chassis was replaced by an all new JK platform. This next-generation Wrangler was noticeably wider than the previous model, with a 3.4-inch (86 mm) wider track; and though the two-door model has a 2-inch (51 mm) longer wheelbase, it is actually 2.5 inches (64 mm) shorter in overall length than the TJ. The four-door Unlimited model has an over 20-inch (510 mm) longer wheelbase at 116 in (2,950 mm) to offer much improved rear seating room.

This was a find from Toys R Us earlier this year, which was part of a series of various historic Jeep models from Hasbro / Funrise (both brand names are on the base, and in fact, so is Tonka). The others in the series seemed to be a little too crude for me, so I only ended up with this Wrangler Unlimited. It is larger than the 1/65 scale Tomica version, but not quite in the 1/55 scale territory, so I'd guess it to be around 1/60. It lacks an interior, but the exterior accessories won me over. This thing is ready to go on a mud-slingin' adventure.

Wikipedia

The JK series 2007 Wrangler Unlimited was unveiled at the New York Auto Show on April 12, 2006. It is stretched even more than the TJ model, and featured four doors. This change made it the last-remaining 2-door SUV in North America to gain a four-door option and made it the only four door convertible in production. The Unlimited has the same engine and transmission choices as a short-wheelbase JK. Changes for 2015 include the new paint colors (including, new for 2015, Tank (dark olive green), Sunset Orange, Copper Brown, Baja Yellow, and Firecracker Red.)

Not bad for a Funrise model, all things considered! Like you, I am also drawn to the exterior accessories- something that isn't covered too much in small scale- definitely refreshing to see.

Another great submission for COTD! Thanks for posting.

Support your local demo derby.

Looks like a good platform as a parts donor model for a custom.

Great choice! I've seen this series several times at TRUs. As somewhat of a Jeep aficionado, I am impressed with the detail on actually all 4 (2 models in 2 colors each). If they were closer to 1/64 scale, I'd have extras, but as a recovering (NOT :hmph: ) scale snob, I have resisted thus far.

eh, why is this a Hasbro / Funrise item, when there are <Tonka> printings on the sides?

Wiki says Tonka = <Maisto property>

now I am confused, a little bit...

There is a Willy's Jeep casting and a CJ-7, but both are scaled to fit the package, so they end up being much larger than the Wrangler Unlimited, which is why I left the others behind. I will still pick up the black Wrangler Unlimited when I find it.

These are from 2015, and I don't recall anything from Maisto using the Tonka name in many years, so I would guess that rights to the Tonka name has changed hands.

I've walked past these a number of times and keep thinking that same thing...

I bought one and stripped it down to check it out. The body is in scale with the Tomica and green light jeeps. So its in scale but with the wheels and lift kit it looks way out of scale. A little work and I'm going to scale one down, love the casting. Need more jeep unlimited but your right the jeep is way to overdone but the detail is great.

Tonka has been a Hasbro brand since 1991. They must have licensed the brand to Maisto and the contract ended, or maybe Maisto was just making the models for Tonka to sell.

I think this new Tonka Jeep model looks quite cool, despite being a little crude. Hopefully, Hasbro will improve their models and in the future we might have a real contender!

Two days ago I saw a few of these still on the pegs at a WM and got me one. So that takes care of that urge after reading all the above.

I like it, but it's got one glaring issue--poor fit and finish. The casting seems just as rough around the windows as their Ford F-Series casting (rather crude scale down of the old Tonka steel toy) plus none have an interior or clear windows. Given these are priced similarly to a Greenlight or Auto World, they're a little crude.

I've bought a few personally, scale down of Tonka's Suburban Pumper and the Sky Crane, but they could be done better for the price.
