Today's car of the day is Johnny Lightning's 1999 Plymouth Prowler.

Wikipedia

The Plymouth Prowler, later the Chrysler Prowler, is a retro-styled production car manufactured and marketed in 1997 and 1999-2002 by DaimlerChrysler, based on the 1993 concept car of the same name. The Prowler was offered in a single generation in a front-engine, rear-drive, rear-transmission configuration, with an overall production of 11,700. The Plymouth Prowler was produced for the 1997 and 1999-2000 model years. After the Plymouth marque was discontinued in 2001 the Prowler was sold as a Chrysler Prowler for the 2001 and 2002 model years. However, DaimlerChrysler marketed the Prowler as a Plymouth in Canada for the 2000 model year; the Prowler was the last Plymouth sold in Canada.

Johnny Lightning's casting of the Plymouth Prowler is not a highlight in JL history. The 50 cent Maisto casting is a far better representation of the real car. But the JL came with a metal base, adding some heft. Although the JL Prowler casting is from 1996, it is as if JL had a crystal ball as they cast "Chrysler Prowler" on the base, five years before the Prowler would become badged as a Chrysler.

Wikipedia

Across the two production runs, the Prowler was available in 12 colors, including Prowler purple metallic, which was the only color available in 1997. One of the most striking design features of the Prowler are the open, Indy racer-style front wheels. The Prowler featured a powertrain from Chrysler's LH-cars, a 24-valve, 3.5 L Chrysler SOHC V6 engine producing 214 hp at 5850 rpm. For the 1999 model year, the engine was replaced with a more powerful, aluminum-block, 253 hp at 6400 rpm version of the engine. Both engines were coupled to a four-speed Autostick semi-automatic transmission. The Prowler was the first rear-wheel drive Plymouth since the 1989 Plymouth Gran Fury and would stand as the last Plymouth model with that layout. While criticized for having only a V6 engine, Chrysler's High Output 3.5 had a horsepower rating similar to (or higher than) the company's Magnum V8s of that era. While not making nearly as much torque as a V8, Prowler's light weight helped to achieve rapid off-the-line acceleration.

:toy: I was never a fan of the Prowler and this casting is certainly not one of the better renditions of the car. I would agree that the Maisto versions is actually better. I think even the ones from Matchbox captured the overall Prowler look better.

This has the same strangeness going on as the JL Viper from the other day.

Im not feeling this one at all, Other than the casting irregularities the rear wheelbase is all wrong , in the 3/4 front pic one should be able to see the rear wheels. But if you look closely JL got the both the wheel size and axle length all wrong.

Maisto certainly did way better, as far as the 1:1 version you rarely see them. Most probably because its a nice weather car and in my area not many days are nice weather. That and the limited production of 11,702.

One thing I would like to see is a die cast manufacturer make this in a correct scale model with the rare color matched trailer that you could buy as a $5000 option. GL should do this in its Hitch and Tow series.

Here is a plastic model of one.

At least it has rubber tires. That's about all I can think of in terms of complements for this one.

Support your local demo derby.

I first thought from the 1st pic this was some sort of one off custom of the Plymouth Prowler. Then I realized it was suppose to be of the real 1/1. Yikes. Motormax I think offered this or the Chrysler Howler. Need to look around at the Database to confirm.

Motormax offered both the Prowler and Howler.

The Prowler from Motormax was #6045 but couldn't find a picture.

Did Realtoys offer a Prowler too?

I think I have a yellow larger scale Maisto or New Ray somewhere. Windshield is smashed from childhood.

I have seen one Prowler, a black one, in a Cracker Barrel parking lot four or five years ago.

The JL looks great. What's odd is that the door handles are printed on--something I've never seen before. I always expected this detail to be part of the body casting.
