Today's car of the day is Great Wall Motor Co OEM's 2015 Haval H2.

Wikipedia

Great Wall Motors Company Limited is a Chinese automobile manufacturer formed in 1984. The company is named after the Great Wall of China. As of 2010, it is China's largest sport utility vehicle (SUV) producer. A wide model range can be had from Great Wall, from light trucks and SUVs to urban runabouts. While its entire model line carries the same badge, the company differentiates its SUV, passenger car, and pickup truck lines naming them Haval, Voleex, and Wingle, respectively. Great Wall products have been available in many places across the globe, including Africa, Australia, Europe, where an assembly plant in Bulgaria gives duty-free access to the European Union, Melanesia, the Middle East, Russia, South America, South Asia, and the South Pacific. In 2015, Haval became a stand-alone sub-brand of Great Wall Motors. The Great Wall name and badges on the SUVs were replaced with the Haval name.

Not to be confused with the Hummer H2... I recently found a seller in China offering various Haval SUV models which had been produced as promotional items. The box has limited information in both Chinese and imperfect English, with legal information for Haval's parent company, Great Wall Motor Company. There is no manufacturer information indicating who was contracted to make the models, so they will probably forever be known as Great Wall Motor Co OEM promo models. The nub on the base which kept the car screwed to a display base in the box, is distracting in pictures, and someday I would like to file those down. I had not heard of Haval prior to seeing these models, so it was interesting to learn about the brand while prepping today's COTD. I wonder how long it will be before we start seeing Haval branded SUVs available for sale in North America.

As the 52nd passenger car brand to enter the Australian market - and a sub-brand of better-known Great Wall Motors - Haval has positioned itself as an interesting alternative to stalwart SUV rivals. The petrol-only Haval H2 range is one of three SUV models the Chinese importer offers currently. For the moment, the Tiguan-sized model joins the Touareg-sized H8 and even larger H9. Haval is pronounced to rhyme with gravel. Under the bonnet the Haval H2 arrives with a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder across the range. The twin cam unit features variable valve timing and utilizes direct injection. The front-wheel drive model is mated to a choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Drive it like you stole it!
Thats a great looking model, I was wondering if that was a screw nub on the bottom and read that it was. File it off and you got yourself a fantastic model there.

Wow - a nice looking model - never heard of the Haval before so kind of neat to see one in diecast. Your collection amazed me Dean with all these never heard of brands and models and all sorts of good stuff. Great to see them part of COTD.

We won't. There are big brand vehicles being sold in China, but there are a lot of knockoffs and copied of real vehicles there too. Most appear to be tin cans of death that would never pass safety regulations in other countries unless they've been making huge improvements the last few years.

Interesting model - looks nicely made. The car looks like many small SUVs on sale in the UK. Whether the real one will be sold here remains to be seen - although not offering a diesel isn't a good start in this class of car.

Some Great Wall vehicles are sold here - Steed pickups - which look a bit Toyota/Isuzu like.

I am aware of the other cheap car brands and copies, most of which don't leave the China / Russia area, but Haval has apparently been making big strides in making themselves viable on the international market. Most of what I found on the brand and vehicles (in English) were articles out of Australia, where they seem to be impressed with the quality, but critical of an underpowered engine. I don't pretend to know what Australia's safety testing requirements are, but I would be wary to say Haval will never be available stateside. Will it be this year? That I can agree to saying no to. But never?

All I can say is that I hope the 1/1 isn't sold here. If it is, I sure hope they make sure it's reliable and safe. Keep in mind, I own a nearly 50 year old clunker that's much, much more unsafe

The car looks great! Being from an odd maker makes it even more interesting.

Folks are already complaining that the Buick Envision crossover will be built in China and imported. Unless this Haval was super cheap and met our safety standards I don't see it happening either. If it does manage to become imported I do not see it selling in large numbers. That segment is already crowded.
