Today's car of the day is from corvairjim's collection, and is Johnny Lightning's 1963 Chevrolet Impala.

Wikipedia

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size (upper mid-size from 2000 to 2013) automobile built by Chevrolet for model years 1958 to 1985, 1994 to 1996, and 2000 to present. Deriving its name from the African antelope of the same name, Chevrolet's most expensive passenger model through 1965 had become the best-selling automobile in the United States. The 1963 Impala featured rectilinear styling with an engine-turned aluminum rear taillight panel surrounded by a chrome border on SS models. Engine choice was similar to 1962, with the small-block 283-and-327-cubic-inch (4.6 and 5.4 L) V8s most popular. The Sport Sedan featured a new, creased roof line. A new "coved" instrument panel with simple indicator lights for hot and cold engine conditions. An optional factory tachometer was built into the dashboard, just above the steering wheel; it was rarely ordered.

Wikipedia

Dave Strickler was a drag racer during the 1960s. He was from Malvern, or York, PA. Some of his early cars were called "The Old Reliable". He died in 1985. In the early days his "tuner" was Bill Jenkins. Among his many wins was NHRA World Champ Super Stock Eliminator, 1968.

Hemmings

By the 1960s, NHRA rules were beginning to squeeze a little tighter each passing year, and the best way to circumvent those rules was to simply produce a factory racer made available to the everyday Joe. Chevrolet's 1963 lightweight offering could be found in the Impala Z-11. The $1,245 Z-11 option was available only on the Impala sport coupe, complete with a massive big block and an extreme use of aluminum panels. The monstrous 427-cu.in. engine blasts 430hp from its eight cylinders. Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins just happened to take delivery of the very first 1963 Z-11 produced from The Old Reliable Ammon R. Smith Auto Company, located in York, Pennsylvania. Being a long-time sponsor of the Jenkins efforts on the track with driver Dave Strickler, The Old Reliable always adorned both sides of the cars he purchased and prepared from Ammon R. Smith. The numerical designation of IV just happened to be the next in line, and the two men only ran the Z-11 during the 1963 season, after which Jenkins sold it.

Fullsize
Looks great as part of a Hitch and Tow. I hope GL would release some authentic pro-street/ pro-stock cars as part of their series.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
JL always did well in making the big full size cars of the 60's, 70's, etc.
