Today's car of the day is Imperial's 1956 Ford Fairlane Sunliner.

Wikipedia

The 1955 Ford is an automobile which was produced by the Ford in the United States for the 1955 model year and, in revised form, for the 1956 model year. The American Ford line of cars gained a new body for 1955 to keep up with surging Chevrolet, although it remained similar to the 1952 Ford underneath. For 1955, the Fairlane name replaced the Crestline as Ford's premier full-sized offering. The eggcrate grille featured on the 1955 cars was widened into a series of rectangles for 1956.

The 1956 Fairlane Sunliner is another of the impressive Imperial branded models. The castings debuted under the Imperial name in 2000, and were later marketed under the Buddy L name in 2003 (but still with the Imperial name and information in the legal printed area on the back of the packages). For their time, these cars were awesome. The subject matter had not been well covered at that time, and the models looked the part, yet they were considered budget diecast, with a 5-pack selling for $4 to $5. The models were typically found at drug stores, and later on, Kay Bee Toys had the sets available. This 1956 Ford Fairlane Sunliner has the details from the '56, including the restyled trim piece along the sides with the downward bar extension on the doors, and the oval lights under the headlights, which replaced the 1955's round bullet-style lights.

Wikipedia

The Lifeguard safety package, consisting of seat belts, a padded dashboard, a deep-dish steering wheel, and a breakaway rearview mirror, was introduced in 1956. The option was a slow-seller. The optional air conditioner, which remained expensive and thus a slow seller, was totally revamped; the compressor was now housed beneath the hood and the cooling vents were moved to atop the dashboard. Six different body styles were offered, including the Crown Victoria Skyliner with a tinted, transparent plastic roof, the regular Crown Victoria coupe with lots of stainless steel trim, a convertible Sunliner, the Victoria coupe, and traditional sedans. All featured the trademark stainless-steel "Fairlane stripe" on the side. Power options were a 223 CID (3.7 L) straight-6 engine and a 272 CID (4.5 L) V8. The 292 Y-block was offered as an option and was called the Thunderbird V-8. Few changes were made for 1956; a four-door Victoria hardtop and two new, more powerful V8 options, of 292 CID (4.8 L) and 312 CID (5.1 L), the latter available up to 225 horsepower, were introduced.

 A nice Ford convertible from Imperial/Buddy L. I found my version in one of the five packs a number of years ago in a Safeway store in the State of Washington. For a "budget" toy it really is nicely finished - especially considering the time period it was released in.

New casting? Quick! Take it apart!
Have never seen an Imperial casting in the stores, but in 2000, I was just getting interested in actually "collecting" diecasts instead of buying a few here and there. So I missed some gems. Not bad at all, this one. I wonder what that yellow top would have looked like, if put up!

Drive it like you stole it!
WOW! is that not the largest bumper ever seen on a die cast. That front bumper is just massive!
