The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

![]() Today's car of the day is Lionel's 2015 Chevrolet SS NASCAR stock car (Chase Elliott). ![]()
![]() For more information and pictures of the real car please visit: Chase Elliott ![]() We've been featuring a different vehicle as Car Of The Day for over eight years. So it's a rare occasion when I get the opportunity to add a new brand to the list of featured cars. And what a brand it is! Lionel is certainly one of the most well-known names in toys, most noted for model railroading. The current Lionel isn't related to the original company, and while they own the Lionel trademark and continue to manufacture Lionel trains the original Lionel company divested their model railroading to General Mills in 1969 and eventually ended up running their own chain of toy stores that went out of business in 1993. Lionel certainly left big shoes to fill in the model railroading world. If Lionel, LLC has big shoes to fill, it's doubly so for Chase Elliott? Not only is he walking in the footsteps of his 1988 Winston Cup champion father, he inherited the ride of none other than Jeff Gordon upon his retirement. He's also the first driver in NASCAR history to earn the Xfinity Series championship in his rookie season. ![]()

The Chevy SS looks great in its NASCAR two door body. I especially like the NAPA sponsor graphics on this one. |

This is a great paint scheme, agreed! It was run at Darlington last year when they did their retro paint schemes race. This one is meant to invoke the Coors/Melling Thunderbirds of Chase's dad. And hence why this big Bill Elliott fan had to have it even though I don't collect anything NASCAR past 1997 as a general rule.

I suppose at one time or another I knew that about Lionel but had forgotten that this isn't the original company famous for all those wonderful O gauge trains. This is a sharp looking stock car - kind of fun from time to time to look back at those early offerings from Racing Champions in the late '80's/early '90's when there was next to nothing available for NASCAR.

I'm not big on Nascar stuff, but that looks really nice with all the tampo details on there. |

Long gone are the days when I knew which driver drove which sponsored car, but I still pick up the occasional NASCAR model, just to have the nameplates represented (Taurus, Fusion, Impala, SS, Camry, etc). I like the look of this one, and would have grabbed it, if I ever saw it. |

I haven't really paid attention to the NASCAR models over the years. The ones that have came into my collection in the past decade or so have all been promotional gifts of some sort, like the Cub Cadet Ford Fusion. I've got a gold Napa stocker somewhere. Driver I think was Mark Martin. It's was a promo gift from NAPA Auto Parts about 2003ish. This one looks great! Given some of the designs over the years, I think I need to start buying 1/64 Nascar again. |

I only found it about a month ago, actually. Check Walmart - they seem to have the best selection of Lionels. |
