I did some digging on this lunchtime find, but came up with only modern stuff. Any one have any info such as age. I realize that it was probably Japan only or at least Asian market.

I won't be any help, either, but I DO happen to have a Tomy Long Train, a D51 / L11. I have had no luck either finding out any history on it. I remember buying it at the Timonium Train Show in Maryland a few years back, from a mostly Lionel dealer/seller who has oddball stuff all the time. This was one of those items going cheap. :) I thought it neat to see a Tomy train. I also searched Google, but to no avail, found some similar trains, even in the same box, but no details or history on it either. Other than the fact that yours is probably a Shinkhansen high-speed train, I can offer no more details on it.

That is neat!

I don't know anything about this Tomica train, but I do know it is a model of the first bullet train - the 0 Series - the Tōkaidō Shinkansen which went into service in 1964. This is my favorite Shinkansen.

I'll try to do some research on it.
Let me know if you ever want to get rid of it - I'd love to add it to my Tomica collection.

This was on my birthday, and they blew the horn... it was awesome!

Can you take pictures of the box from different sides? There might be something that helps.

Hard to find anything online, even in the Japanese Tomica collector sites.

Consulted some of my books, and one has some info on the old Long Tomica. Looks like they were made from 1975 or 1976 to around 1985.
Your train is Long Tomica model number L-11.
D-51 is the train, the D-51 Steam Locomotive. The car it is pulling is a postal car - as in mail.
More info coming if I can get my wife to translate...

All I could find so far is this Japanese site: http://skp.my.coocan.jp/tec0goods/index.htm

Scroll down a bit & you'll see an entry for this model. Estimated to be from around 1982.

I found some other pictures in one of my books and going by pictures found online it looks like there were at least 7 different Tomica Trains. These were a completely different series than the Long Tomica.

If I recall some of the Tomica pocket catalogues from the '70's pictured a number of small scale Tomica train models. I no longer have the catalogues so can't check on those. Of the US mail order dealers from that time period I don't recall any of them offering the trains - the only reason I say that is I, too, like trains and am sure if I had had the opportunity I would have gotten them as well.
