Mike's "R"

My good friend Mike retrieved his Crystal White 1995 Cobra R from storage to enter the 2016 Buffalo Motorama show this spring. Here are a few pics when it was detailed and put back on the road. There were only 250 of these made.

Wiki:
1995 Cobra R
In the wake of the '93 R’s unexpected success, SVT engineers developed a more powerful R-model based on the 1995 Cobra. Top priority became addressing customer requests for a larger, more powerful engine and more fuel capacity. In response to those requests, SVT replaced the Cobra’s 5.0 L V8 with an SVT modified version of Ford’s 5.8 liter Windsor V8, re-engineered to produce 300 horsepower (220 kW) and installed a 22 gallon fuel cell. To handle the torque of the more powerful engine, a Tremec 3550 5-speed manual transmission was installed. See also 5-speed T-5 manual. Again, weight-savings was targeted, so there was no back seat, radio, power windows/seats or air-conditioning—not even fog lights, which were omitted to provide ducts for getting cool air onto the front disk brakes. Heavy-duty progressive-rate springs, thicker stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace helped improve handling on the racetrack. Only 250 vehicles were built, available only in white with saddle cloth interior, each with a unique center-tiered fiberglass hood tall enough to clear the engine and induction system.

As with the '93R, only owners of a valid racing license were able to obtain one of these cars.

I always look at torque more than horses. I have these dumb anuses telling me I have 300 horses I can run with you and the dummies only have like 280 pounds of torque.

Favorite bumper sticker: My lug nuts require more torque than your Honda makes...

It has been said: Horsepower gets you to the wall, torque gets you through the wall!

Torque, power, gearing and weight all matter.

If one engine is really high strung and has a very peaky torque curve, and the other is dead flat, if they both make the same peak power the dead flat one will feel far more powerful.

If the peaky one is given more aggressive gearing this can start to offset that difference in torque. (300lb/ft @ 4000 rpm feels like more through a 2.00 ratio gear (say, 2nd gear) and a 5.4 final drive than it would through a 0.81 ratio gear (say, 5th or 6th) and a 3.0 final drive.) You can trade acceleration for top speed, but street cars don't usually run crazy high ratio final drives.

If the peaky one with more aggressive gearing is put inside a much lighter body that can further offset that difference, but if one engine produces 50% more torque you end up needing a find a 2000lb body to keep up with the guy who's got similar (straight line) performance in a 3000lb platform (assuming they're running the same gearing, altering the amount the gearing multiplies the torque will let the lighter car weigh more relative to the heavy one).

If torque meant everything guys in turbodiesels or with small, modern turbo engines should smoke everyone else, but if your torquey diesel engine runs out of steam at 4500rpm then you're stuck running really low ratio gearing just in order to have a reasonable top speed (the opposite problem guys with high revving NA engines have, they need a really high multiplier because hitting 90mph in first doesn't mean much if it takes forever to get there).

Basically you have:

engine output x gearing x final drive / weight = straight line potential

Yes, as stated in the text above. Tremec 3550 5-speed manual.
