It is still such a thrill to look at my JL Mopar collection and remember when these 340s really ruled the streets in my home town of Westerville Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. I bought my 1971 340 Demon in early 1974. I worked at Jegs Automotive at the time and got quite a discount on parts. I equipped my 340 with a Mopar Purple Series cam shaft, a set of Hooker Headers, a jetted out to the max Thermo~Quad Carter carb, and some valve and head work. Tranny was a 727 Torque Flight with a shift kit and torque converter. First time down the quarter mile was a 12:07. blowing the L-60-15 rear tires off at least half way down the strip. This Demon was just that, a "Screamin' Street Demon"... If I would have learned to control it out of the gates, and mabe with a set of slicks to hook, that car would have easily broke into the mid 11s. Never got the chance, I demolished it street racing in the early morning hours on a Saturday in mid 1975. These 340s were full race cars in disguise!!!
Although I am a Ford guy, those 340s made a believer out of me!!!

I bought this 1972 340 Duster after I recovered from the accident, but in 1972 the government stepped in on the musclecar era and horse power went to pot. Compression was lowered in the 72 340s and they didn't seem to run anywhere near the 68, 69, 70, & 71 340s.
