Here's the first casting of the VW Samba Bus. In Canada, it came on a generic card that said Classic Car, which was used for a number of different series. Only in Canada, bleh.

Around that time I was buying die-cast from on-line retailer Collectors Net USA, anyone here still remember them? Anyways, they had a special edition model made for them. It was the VW Samba bus but with redline plastic wheels instead of the blackwall model. Just wondering does anyone else have this version in their collection?

:toy: Nope - didn't have that version of the VW Samba - but do remember Collectors Net USA. Seem just like diecast brands - a number of those on-line and mail order dealers are long gone. I remember a couple of dealers I got much of my NASCAR from - and they no longer exist either.

Way back when, I bought JL diecast from Collectors Net USA.
That was a very long time ago.
As I recall, the husband deployed to the middle East for a tour of duty and the wife tried running it for a while.
She didn't seem to make a go of the business and I think that slowly went out of business.
I remember the special edition VW bus but can't remember if I ever bought one.
BYW, do you remember Adkins and Diecast Warehouse among others.?

Cheers. Cobra

Yes, that sounds about right regarding CNUSA. I think I did buy from Diecast Warehouse a few times, but not Adkins. Oh and don't forget Mac's Little Cars, I bought from Sherry and Rob quite a bit back in the day.

Hi Harry,

I remember buying most of my JLs from TommyToyz. Anyone remember them? They were great.

Also, your Samba has another difference. It's the wheels themselves. The regular version has "Commemorative 2" tires and rims. They're named that because they were first used on JL's second release of Topper castings (Thunderbird, Toronado, Mako Shark, etc.)

Your Samba with red striped tires features the "B" Wheel. That's interesting because that tire/rim combo wasn't used in the Volkswagen series until Release 2. The "B" Wheel features an internal bearing attached to the axle. It doesn't wobble as much and was designed for racing. I think it also looks a little better (with the chrome area not being so huge). Look at the two closely and you'll see they're different. Pretty cool.

Hi Mac,

Thanks very much for the information regarding the different wheel types. If I quote you as the source, would it be ok for me to share your wheel info on my blog?

I really enjoy the insights you bring to the hobby.
