The '70s and '80s were the "dark days" of the automotive industry for some manufacturers. Many fine sort of decent automobiles produced then have been lost to time.

Grab those leg warmers and let's delve into the Malaise Era.

To start off, one of my favorite manufacturers - and one which didn't make it out of the '80s...

In this time period, Buick firmly solidified its reputation as an "old people's car". Even the Reatta and the GS models couldn't shake that stigma. Here are a few models I've spotted in the area.

I saw one driving the other way this past weekend. But it was very rough - certainly not worth snapping a picture of.

On a side note, I love this thread. Is it okay for others to add in pics of '70s & '80s cars too or do you want this to remain your thread?

Certainly - go right ahead and add all the photos you want. :)

Mazdas from this period seem to be a dying breed around here. I haven't seen more than one or two from the '70s...

Apart from the wheels, this maroon 626 is identical to one of the cars my family had when I was growing up. They donated it to Goodwill around 2002.

Some recent finds, which aren't too common in roadworthy shape these days. These cars really weren't built to last, so the fact that these examples have survived is notable.

No matter how many times I see it, that B-pillar always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The rest of the car looks perfectly fine - but that B-pillar...

Lol, and that's what I love most about it! Dual opera windows and dual vinyl roofs. Add in hidden headlights and this car is so over-the-top '70s it should come standard with an 8-track of Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack and a leisure suit.

How did you know I have a soft spot for color-matching rims...? That is one very nice Spirit!

I'm far from a truck nut, but these Ford workhorses deserved a photo or two.

I have such an odd joy in seeing cars from the mid/late 80's that are still completely intact. A first generation Escort? Forget about it! Chevy Celebrity Eurosport? Swiss cheese at best..here.

Is that a random hood ornament addition on that first maroon one, or a sensor of some kind? Silly stick on fake hood vents on the 2 tone gray. The graphics on that black Ranger are awesome. Cool batch of oldies. :)

Hood ornament looks like one off the LTD of the same era.

I can't imagine where this has been hiding for the last 27 years. Most Dakotas of that age have fist-sizes rust holes, given the location. This one doesn't look so bad.

I always thought the T-Bird's B pillar paid tribute to the '55-'56 Fairlane Crown Victorias.

This was my 1979 Thunderbird that went 200K+ miles.

Jack, that's a gorgeous 'Bird you had!

Since that '79 Spirit moved some folks... how about another one? This one's a '79 AMX originally sold with a 304 V8 and a 4-speed (the last year such a combo was available, making this the last of AMC's muscle cars), though it now has a 360 under the hood:
