Getting MBX Organized

Over the past month or so I picked up a couple shelf racks to so I could at least un-box some of my Matchbox collection.

Actually it's my later issue Matchbox collection, from around the 1990's until current, but I haven't even got to the boxes of carded singles from the basic range, I still have 4 really big boxes of those stacked against the wall, but the multi-packs and gift/play sets are a start.

Two following pics are both sides of the shelf rack in the bedroom.....I knew I had a lot of 5 and 10-packs, but didn't remember how many scattered in different boxes everywhere, nearly 150 5-pks, and I haven't even bought that many since when the economy first went bad in '07 or so, and I think it was about 30 10-pks, and a number of Mission Force sets here.

Below is the walk-in closet, one side of it, with another new shelf unit, (this room used to be packed with boxes and tubs, there was virtually no floor space, and now I can actually go inside) the other side of the closet is still stacked high with boxes of mostly other brands. This definately is not all my MBX playsets and special groups, I have a barrister bookcase in the other room stuffed with them, and a number things on the high shelves in the closet.

The good news is that I can actually get to most of my collection now, albeit many are still in a lot of boxes.....I can get to the boxes now though. :D

Since much of it has been packed away for 4 years or so, a number of times in past weeks I found myself passing time just checking out individual 5 and 10 pks, and enjoying them all over again

Funny how a walk-in closet looks big when it's empty. I actually had a dream last night about filling every vacant space in my house with my collection so that I could see it all without having to dig through sterilite tubs......I should call it a nightmare....I realized if I were to display every single model so that I could see it without effort, I would need a house about 3 times as large as I have.

I've never tallied my 5-packs and multipacks, but 150 5-packs is a stunning number. Makes me wonder just how many I do have.....and I've been pretty strict with the "emergency vehicle" criteria, but must have a few dozen that don't fit that limitation.

Blair, this closet hadn't been empty since I moved here, since I only have a 600 square ft apartment or maybe less, I had no place else to move boxes while I was trying to create a way to get the closet somewhat organized....It was a bit difficult, but I did manage to pull enough out to get enough space to assemble the shelf rack in place, and from there I was able to empty boxes.
Before the economy did me in, I had nearly 1000 square ft place, gave me room to display or easily get to most every diecast I had...... I have a lot of emergency and military 5pks mixed in there, but probably more are not, but not too many that are all just cars either, you know like modern rides and classic cars types 5pks.

Jim you are right about Walts, .that is my little Convoy cabinet, pictured below. Folks who don't collect think we are all a bit crazy anyway I guess. Are you talking about those two SF Mustangs I picked up at Webster the day I first met you, if so, I'll post pictures sometime soon, there is actually a third Mustang, he mentioned he had another at home and saved it for me for the next time I came out to the market.

Thought I'd show a few more pics of my, well I can't really call them displays, so we'll say they are some more pictures of my diecast storage areas. :D

This is the at the end of the closet.

Below pic is the other wall of the closet, just boxes of other brands, all filled with diecast, though above these is a shelf of more Mbx items.

Below are a couple better shots of the two shelf rack shelves in the closet, in case anyone wanted to get a better peek.

These shelves are the Majorette section in the bedroom, not a good shot of contents, but they don't really belong in the Matchbox forum anyway. :D

The rest of my collection is just stuffed into 3 bookcases I have in the living room, and about a dozen more boxes and tubs I have stacked in the bedroom, so not much to see there either.

I think we all have similar piles and problems of space, I know my display cabinets are full and storage is overflowing, I could pare back a few things I have more than one of. Yes, Doug, those Mustangs, great models that went to a great individual so it's fitting, that's how I cope with it, HaHa! Keep me in mind if ever...

That is one of my favourite things to do when I have the time...glancing over those old issues really brings back memories for myself.

Anyways, what a collection you have there...and nice to see that they are all stored nicely. Much like the others, I'd love to go take a peek in there sometime! Thanks for sharing, Douglas.

Thanks guys for your kind words and comments!

Since folks like to see my messy shelves, and whole place in general, I thought I'd add a few more photos.

This is one side of the upper closet shelves, the other one is too messy to show a pic of.

The long view......

And views of the same shelf from two angles.....

These two below are shots of my Matchbox emergency vehicle cabinet in the bedroom, of course it is not all of them, there are still more scattered in various boxes in various places, but I thought this would work when I first started separating things, but obviously it is too full already.

And if no mods are looking I'll throw in a shot of my Tomica cabinet.

When I see all this stuff, I feel like folks might think I'm a wealthy collector or something, but actually most of what I've collected over the past 20 years were found at very good deals, sometimes incredible deals at the time, and much of the big older items are used or in less than perfect condition, I'm always looking for the best bargain when I'm out, but still, I guess I'm rich in the quantities of items in my collection, and the joy I get out of them.

Thanks everyone,

Does NO ONE keep clothes in their closets any more?! :P

Oh, wait, my closet doesn't even have room for toys in it......it's the extension of my library......books upon books upon books....

Wow!! incredible collection, Doug. I wish I had collect the 5-pack and 10-pack many years ago. I see and stated by you that you posses nearly 150 5-packs alone, that's a lot and great.
I hope you get to showcased each of them soon.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks again guys for the kind words, and some funny comments. :D

I have and do enjoy sharing photos of the individual Matchbox models and sets, and have a lot no doubt, though not as many as some collections I've seen photos of on the boards, but I like to see when other collectors post their latest of something I also have already, just as much as liking to see something I don't have, guess I'm like most of us, just loving these toy cars and the joy they bring us. ^_^

Here is the last of my Matchbox displays, well mostly Matchbox here, so if you want to call this "displays", these cabinets are probably the closest to actual displays though they are just over packed and a mess right now.

They are in a corner of the living room, and as I said are mostly Matchbox, although there is a shelf of Corgi, and another shelf of miscellaneous others, and then the taller (gun) cabinet contains My NASA and space related models, which is a mix of many brands.

Don't mind the sheets piled on top, I keep these cabinets covered to try and protect the models from that Florida sunlight. B)

Yes it does, it has buildings and things inside, I haven't look at it in a few years, and it might be hard to take good photos of, but I will try to do some and post it in a new thread sometime soon.

Yes, those 'barrister' bookcases are awesome! I'd love to have a set or two of those....and the space to place them, of course!

I picked up those barristers in the first couple years of my collecting mid-late 90's, they came from Big Lots, ready to assemble, only $99 each, I bought them each at separate times as I recall, as my collection grew. The gun cabinet was the last one they had, the floor model getting cleared out for $50...... Don't think Big Lots carries anything like any of these cabinets anymore.
