TO THE RESCUE (1975 Playcase)

This playcase was a gift from close friends this past Christmas. Its rather smallish unassuming plain box made it a complete surprise,
especially considering my other playcases are much taller and longer, yet thinner like a car case.

So sliding it out of the box and seeing what it was definitely brought a big smile,
not only a playcase, but a emergency rescue related one at that. :D

Below, the closed case is shown with a Matchbox car on top to give an idea of the smaller size.

Below are a couple shots of the fire stations "action slide", in case you were curious, just a tab sticks out the back to manually lift the vinyl ramp.

I'd noticed the outer box was a perfect fit, and mentioned it might be original, when my friend said it is, and pointed me to the label on box.....
....He thought it looked like an old Sears warehouse label.

While I don't believe this was ever played with, the small turn latch is broken, actually broken off and missing,
I suspect it happened when someone slid it into the snug fitting box, but You may have also noticed the burning building is missing from mine,
probably got set up on some collectors firetruck shelf, and after many years past he didn't remember it belonged to this set.....just guessing.

Hope you enjoyed seeing yet another Matchbox playcase, but don't be disappointed, or hopefully you're not tired of them, but I do have only one last set to eventually photograph and share.

Great Gift! I am happy to say that managed to keep my very lovingly play worn playset; I just wish I had a place to display it.

Very cool. I have my parent's old COleman stove and lantern in their worn boxes that also have Kmart warehouse labels on them.

I'm in the same boat, I often think about having a enough space to set all this stuff up filled with diecast models for display.

Right now it will all just have to sit on a shelf, and get one out occasionally to share photos. :D

:o Gee...can I come over to your house and play cars? Awesome set and one that certainly gets the attention of us emergency vehicle collectors! Thinking 1975 was one of those years when I wasn't doing a lot of collecting...internship-university studies and falling in love seemed to have kept me occupied that year. :D

There just happens to be one for sale on ebay right now. Looks to be in worse condition than yours, Doug, but perhaps more complete overall.

John, Unfortunately there is no room here to actually play with the cars and sets, I usually have to shift things out of the way at my place just to set a toy item out for pictures.

Blair, thanks for the heads up, it sounds tempting just to get the burning building to complete mine if the price was worth it to me, I didn't even consider it might be available there.....of course I haven't used ebay or paypal accounts in years so don't even know if either are still active. :D

Congrats, that is a wonderful set!!
Matchbox was such a cool company back then and still, they went belly up. Although i did spend a lot of my pocket money for their products.....

Thanks!

A number of years ago, someone once posted on another board, I forget who, possibly one of our former Mbx Ambassadors, either way, he was pretty well known in the hobby as I recall and seemed to be very familiar with the workings of the Lesney company from back in their day, but he mentioned that the Matchbox toy cars were always profitable for them, even with the Hot Wheels competition, he thought it seemed to be more a matter of them venturing into too many other (and costly) things for the company which was more likely what did them in, rather than slower sales of Matchbox cars.
