2 Mbx Mercedes McLarens, right now at 10 bids and $37 (and shipping) with less than an hour to go.

Probably a new hype in progress...

Glad I got mine straight from the pegs when they were new. :P

I don't think so, I've bought from seller twice in the recent past, he starts all of his auctions low and lets them land wherever. This auction is no different from the others he's done.

Some of the MBs from the late aughts have really taken off. This casting only had 2 or 3 releases if I recall so it's no exception.

Look at some of his other auctions. People must have money to burn. The auto world gt for 20 bucks shipped, there are a couple of WalMart s near me with them still on the shelf. And these are for loose cars. Buyer beware or better yet I should start selling my extras on eBay.

Are we talking about the same seller? I looked through every one of his listings for the past 3 weeks including those coming up for next week, and haven't seen a single Auto World casting of any kind.

Today is Porsche and Mercedes. Does Auto World make a Porsche or Mercedes?

Those MB Mercedes McLarens were 2 and done as MB lost the license and the casting shelved, However, they've gotten the license back and are reissuing the car so I don't think the high prices will hold. Here's a post on the lamely blog about it:

Bidders usually have a habit of over bidding and over paying for item(s) when they start at no reserve, or close to no reserve.

I was actually referring to the Mercedes models. ;)

Just like the Bugatti Veyron from HW these two are 'hot cakes' because they lost the license.

maybe we should start a thread about Funny & Crazy Auctions
Cause sometimes the seller doesn't know that value, misspells alot or the vehicle(s) go for a redonkulous price

So was I. ;)

I knew about Mbx losing the Mercedes license (but doesn't really affect other Mercedes models?). Didn't know about Bugatti license, first I've heard...but all three (make that four if there is one in the Speed Machines line) of the mainline Veyrons are unrealistically priced. Quick look shows not only a Speed Machines version, but another mainline issued in 2010 I didn't know about....so 2003-2010 makes at least 5 releases over 7 years, hardly rare, and the loss of the Bugatti license must have been very recent. Then there's the loss of the Rolls Royce license, and that doesn't seem to have affected *any* of the old Rolls Royce castings. So loss of licensing is not an adequate excuse.

Hype *from* collectors would be more like it I think, not hype aimed at collectors. Flying fickle finger of fashion....

Right Wes, losing the license didn't affect the other Mercedes models, why would it, but they couldn't make the Mclaren anymore after only one recolor, thus causing a brief appearance and higher prices achieved on the 2ndary market.

Honestly $37 is not a bad price for the lot. I cannot speak with knowledge on the Hot Wheels but individually a Matchbox McLaren in the package will fetch around $30 but will go as high as $40 or so. Typically the black model will get the higher bids.

Loose they usually go for around $10-$15 so with the Hot Wheels thrown in as well this seems somewhat reasonable when it comes to eBay at least.

I would agree that the Mercedes McLaren's return will probably dampen prices a bit, making its arrival bittersweet - although I am happy it is back.

You are probably joking around, but that idea does kind of represent something I think happens quite often with auctions, when a model sells pretty high everyone else who has the same figures they will get in on it , and the selling prices drop. Guess that is that supply & demand thing.
