I was admiring this model from a 1997-98 5-Pack, and wondered how they would have applied the stripes going across the hood. Curious because it would seem too difficult to form some sort of mask to spray paint it on there and the sides, but then it also seems to line up too perfectly with the side stripes to be tampo printed, assuming they would have to tampo each surface (hood versus sides) separately ,.....What do you think?

Doesn't look like a paint op because the lines are too crisp, and more noticeably there is actually a misalignment. If you look at the beltline of the car (from flat top to flat side) there is a slight misalignment (the side print is just a bit too far back). Another telltale sign of tampo printing is the notorious missing print found in creases too tight for the machine to hit (the door lines). |

I had heard (read) somewhere they are using "printers" now. Essentially miniature spray guns. |

Thanks guys! Nicolas, your evaluation makes good sense to me seeing as I was once familiar with that issue with tampo printing not filling in the cracks, but of course forgot all about it when considering this curiosity of mine, and you turned the light back on for me , but yeah, if it had been paint those hood and door lines should have been mostly coated with the white paint....Guess they made sure the print pads were pretty well aligned through the tampoing process when they did these. Now I'm wondering if we will see tampoing in this manner again in the future line, since, didn't the Matchbox team say they were going to do more 3 sided tampoing in the future, at least I thought I read that in some post on the board. They said at the Gathering this year that 2017 will see more models with 3-sided prints. Effectively they are taking from some in order to give to others. Generics will basically always have two prints so that if they have the extra availability the third print can hit a licensed model. Also, there are a few models in the mainline that will receive Direct Ink Jet printing which also allows for greater coverage (similar to the old paint ops). I remember them saying something about the Datsun 510 Rally when discussing this. |

We have a printer at work that will print on just about anything. I have been thinking about bringing in a few die-cast and see what happens. |
