This show was the last one at the legendary Hara Arena - in fact, we were one of the very last events there, as it closes this weekend. Though there were a few less tables than usual, I still found some great bargains. :)

Unless otherwise stated, all loose cars were $1.00 each.

NASCAR models go for cheap nowadays - I picked up these harder-to-find releases for 50 cents apiece.
Posted Image

The GTO wagon came on the card and was only $3.00. They usually go for more from other vendors, being holiday cars.
Posted Image

This slightly-loved Tomica Lincoln was the same price...I have the Yat Ming and Zee versions, but not the Tomica original.
Posted Image

Had to shell out a little more ($5) for this premium-edition HW Camaro. Before Tomica Limited was busy putting removable hoods on their race cars, HW beat them to the punch...

I'm usually hesitant to go into double-digits for one 1/64-scale car, but I simply couldn't resist this Playart Caddy for $10. While not in immaculate condition, it is in very nice shape, especially since it is an early release with the two-piece hubcap wheels.

One really cool find were these two 1/24 promo models by Brookfield. These models feature opening hoods, trunks, and four opening doors. There's also a Chrysler Concorde in the series that I found a few shows ago. These were only $5.00 apiece.

Posted Image

Couldn't resist a Matchbox SuperKings model in a lovely shade of blue, also for $5.00. This came in the box, although it was in poor shape.
Posted Image

From the same seller of the SuperKings Peugeot, Vega, and Impala came these gems for a buck apiece.

But my weirdest find of the day was this set of three cars. They are Hot Wheels Pro Circuit cars (the bottom #64 car was a promo) and, as shown, they are authentic Hot Wheels cars. Yet they are clearly not in Hot Wheels packaging. My theory is that these cars are leftover stock liquidated from the factory in China when production of this series stopped, then repackaged by a U.S. distributor other than Mattel. Anyone know the real story behind these oddities?

That about wraps it up for this show. Hope you enjoyed! :)

Nice scores, especially the Majorette Pontiac for a buck!

I like that 1:24 Intrepid because it is the kind of a car most makers won't consider doing and do some well-known sports car or a classic instead.

Support your local demo derby.

Excellent scores for even better prices. I would have nabbed most of the same ones you grabbed.

Nice finds. What kind of car is the packaged police car?

I wish someone had made those LH cars in 1:64. I'm not a fan of the 1:1 cars, but they would be unique in small scale.

Nice finds! I'm not gonna pretend I know a lot about the Pro Circuit cars, but I know I've seen them in HW packaging, somewhere around 97-98 I believe. I didn't collect them as such but still ended up with a few. That is the first I've seen them blistered outside of HW packaging. They came from a premium line, the cars were like $3-4 back then (and I don't recall them selling all that well), which may be the source.

the hw Duracell was a promo car that came with a package of batteries.....
i find it highly unlikely that Mattel would have supplied cars to be blistered under a
different company's name.

Unless they were overstock and send-backs. If there were enough of them, Matty could have sold them on to another marketer.

Now they just repackage the same overstock and sell them as multipacks, especially around Christmas.

The Blown Camaro Duracell was a promo edition, but I think one very similar was also in the Pro Circuit line. Since I haven't committed them to memory, I wouldn't know to tell the difference (if any) between the two issues.

The first time I saw Brach's candy offer free Hot Wheels for proofs of purchase (mail in offer), I bought a bunch of candy and sent in the proofs, thinking I would get one each of the six candy vehicles in diecast. What I received instead was six "Trading Paint" Pro Circuit cars. I was a little taken aback, as it wasn't really clear in the offer what exactly would be sent (later offers clearly showed, let's see I think the Way Too Fast, Flashsider and the Zotic, 1 each year or so, and I sent away for the first two and passed on the Zotic). Since I wasn't into Nascar style racers to begin with, I didn't appreciate having the tampos smudged to boot! I wasn't impressed. Turns out it was a very short run special edition of the Pro Circuit line, I've only seen a couple issues from that series over the years (in fairness, haven't been looking either).

I think Mattel had a very hard time unloading the Pro Circuit cars. The upside is that makes them quite rare by any standards. The downside is still nobody seems to want them. The Blown Camaro is a casting I casually collect, but the Thunderbird Stockers are just so...plain blob...that I can't bring myself to like them. The couple of mainline releases in quasi-race liveries are all I need, paying a premium for blandness with a driver's name attached just wasn't my cuppa tea, and still isn't.

I can't say with any certainty, but that would be my guess how these ended up where they did. Matty was doing a lot of things back then to upmarket, the Pro Circuit line was one of the first attempts and it failed, miserably. Then they had the Legends with the paired 1/18 and 1/64, and that launched the 100% line...which did modestly well, enough to launch the whole online HWC thing, which ended the 100% line. And here we are, what?, about 12 years in and the HWC is still going strong. And that's how Matty is currently retailing metal base metal body spectra paint issues very similar to when they first came out at prices that are comparable (adjusted for inflation) with what they were back then.

So this is an example of a failed attempt to upmarket, and the end result of passing them along to someone else to deal with.

You're right Dan, it is very unlike Mattel to allow their products to be sold in someone else's package. The only similar instance I could think of were the 1980 Wisconsin Toy Co. promos - sold in plastic baggies with cardboard headers, they did not feature the "official" Hot Wheels logo. They were the last cars to feature redline wheels, and I think the cars that ended up as those promos were overstock from something else (Shell promos, perhaps). In any case, they are not considered to be "real" redline-era cars by most collectors. I'm not sure what Mattel's official stance was on those.

HWC would be a good place to ask about these, but I'm not on there any more. I tried reaching out to Mike Zarnock with no response.

Nice scores! I bought that red Intrepid years and years ago at some toy/hobby store in the Mall of America in MN. I remember annoying the crap out of my parents, because I could not pull the trigger on the (at the time) $30 price tag. I remember going back 3-4 times to that store before coming home with it.

I just recently came across it again, in sad shape after years of good use. As luck would have it, I ended up dropping it on my garage floor...which was the final nail in the coffin :(

Harvestman,

Since you didnt mention anything about the card backs, I am presuming they are blank. Just checking though -that they are.

I actually hadn't removed them from the shrink wrap that the seller put them in, until you mentioned it.

The card backs are blank, with the exception of a sticker with a reference number and a date of December 1995. The Pro Circuit line only lasted until 1993...
