Guy had some decent diecast, and this was one of them, couldn't find the tractor cab for it. he basically gave it to me. Nice man!

Here is what the complete truck looks like. I acquired this as a kid, I believe in the late 80's. They hit a home run with the trailer, the over the road tractor is nicely done, but not accurate for what one usually sees for the front end of a tiller.

I have another version from the mid 90's or so.

I, too, have had this model in my collection for many years. The trailer part is quite nice but I agree with Brian the cab/tractor was a bit of a disappointment for not being not being accurate for a fire truck.

Here's a historical case in point:

But of course, these aren't ladders.....

But perhaps the issue with the Majorette TDA is that it's a "sleeper cab"? Or is it that most TDA had/have tractors purpose-built by a fire apparatus manufacturer, rather than putting a 'standard' commercial semi-tractor (say, by Peterbuilt or Kenworth) on a purpose-built ladder trailer?

I don't know much about TDAs other than I like some of them....but it seems most of the actual TDAs I see in photos and person sport tractors built by well-known apparatus firms, while toys seem to 'go for' commercial freight-hauler tractors (Tonka's pressed steel TDAs also an example of commercial tractors pulling a ladder). (Notable exceptions of course.....Busch's ALF TDAs a great example, as are Tomica's Long L10 ALF TDAs.)

Yes, as far back as I can recall FDNY has had Tractor Drawn Aerials (or tillers), as well as Rear Mounts and Mid Mounts in the fleet. Currently the mix is just that TDA's, rear mount ladders and mid mount towers. Over the years they have flirted with some other sets ups, but seem to returned to what works for them.

For the tractor I was referring to how most TDA's have a purpose built fire apparatus cab for the tractor. I know in some cases the departments have opted for a commercial cab (most notable was Seattle with the Kenworths), but usually they go custom due to the fact the fifth wheel of a tiller is extremely different then a traditional tractor trailer set up.

Also I know Majorette did the ALF rear mount marked FDSF, I always thought they should have done a version of this TDA with FDSF, since San Francisco has run only tiller ladders for decades.

Wow, I wonder how those tillers do on some of San Francisco's hills and narrow streets......I guess Lombard would be a tough haul for a TDA!

I didn't know about Seattle going with Kenworths, either. Thanks for the historical perspective, Brian.

Blair,

Here you go. Note the first cabinet on the front part of the trailer, that is actually the door to a platform where a fireman would ride. They had one on each side of the trailer. The ladders were manufactured by Maxim, and as I understand it most rigs in the SFD from the 40's-early 80's were on Kenworth chassis, due to the fact they were headquarters in Seattle.

Those Seattle FD tillers with the Kenwoth cabs were an impressive site to see on the streets of Seattle. Like San Francisco they have a vast variety of hills and narrow streets to navigate.
