Do you remember the Matchbox Collector's Showcase? Here is one of four that I have - really a neat way to display 24 cars on the wall. ![]() ![]()

I don't remember them in stores, but I did find a couple unused small ones (12 car) at a train show a few years back. Your big ones are nice with the molded Matchbox logo on them.![]()

You guys and your darn train shows! A couple of years ago I went to the only train show advertised in this city/area in my decade here and it was tiny and not very interesting. Weird, especially since without trains much of this western US would have remained unpopulated (much to the natives' joy, I'm sure....) I seem to migrate to states where nobody collects model RR.....Alaska and Idaho! Meanwhile....on a completely different note, the big Pioneer forest fire north of Boise blew up yesterday and burned another 29,000 acres of timber in one day! |

Many, many years ago there used to be some real nice trains shows in the Spokane area. I know that is not exactly next door to Boise - nor do I know if they even still exist. I have been away from that area for 32 years (outside of an occasional visit back to the home stomping grounds). An article in the Bismarck newspaper made note of the fire north of Boise and other western fires. Know it is extremely dry out that way. |

I bought something like this in Europe back in the mid-80s, but it was designed and marketed for plastic HO-scale railroading scenic vehicles. Branded for Herpa Automodelle 1:87. Not quite as nice or deep as these for Matchbox, but about the same color plastic, and came with a clear cover (that was easily scratched in storage......) Bigger, though! Back in the early 90s I went to a "train show" in Billings, and one in Great Falls too. At the Great Falls show, I found a few off my most-wanted list at the time, including one of the Playart Hino aerials for a buck. Thought I found both there, but then see I bought one off an ad in the old "Toy Shop" broadsheet periodical instead. That find and others (bought a bunch of stuff from noted firebuff and photographer Jack Calderone--of Fire Apparatus Journal-- from an ad he placed therein) led me to a fateful decision. I lived in Fairbanks at the time, so magazines like FAJ and Toy Shop enabled me to add to my collection when stores selling diecast were few and far between. I placed an ad in Toy Shop and within a month got a call from Colorado because of the ad. Being young, desperate, and naive, the seller convinced me he knew a lot about these 3-inch fire engines and had a nice collection of them for sale. Claimed to be someone who travels around the country to estate sales buying collections of anything and everything; I think I may have specified certain models I was looking for....which probably helped his ruse. He convinced me he had almost everything I wanted at the time, but was just getting ready to head out on the road for another picking trip. Of course, he HAD to have the money immediately because he was "leaving tomorrow morning"....so I stupidly wired $250 to him via Western Union. That was it. Gone. Ripped off. Suckered. A big ego-deflater for me. That's fortunately the only crime I've ever been a victim of (knock wood). Sadly, maybe not any wiser today than then.....but happily ebay is still relatively a safe bet, if sometimes a bit expensive, and helped eliminate the ease of fraud that the old 'classified ads' engendered. Now that my embarrassing and sad story is out of the way, here's a photo of the Herpa display.....with examples of how well it fits some 3-inch and true 1:64 models, not to mention the 1:87 of its namesake company: ![]() I'm surprised it is deep enough for some GreenLight, RWRs, and of course Herpa (the aerial up top) and a variety of Matchbox models. Perhaps I should fill this and find a place to mount it on a wall......oh, I forgot, I don't have space for that, either. It would comfortably fit eight 3" diecast models across, or about 54 altogether figuring 6 on the top row. I forgot to note that the Matchbox display pj showed is perfect size for the current single 24-count case of Matchbox! Those guys must've figured out way back when that some day we'd be at the mercy of 24-ct cases!

Blair, I have a similar big HO display from Wiking, thin white plastic with clear plastic cover, although my shelves are closer together than yours, I think yours may have been designed to accept HO models in their little display boxes, not sure though. If yours is the same material as my Wiking, I believe these Matchbox ones are a thicker firmer plastic. As far as train shows, there is only the one in my area that I go to, a quarterly show, there are no more regular toy or diecast shows in my area anymore that I know of, but there are usually only a few dealers with diecast at the train show, usually the same dealers each time, once in a while someone else will show up with something new, my showcases came from one of those guys that was only there for one show to clear out some of his diecast collection....I was happy to oblige. Sorry to read of your getting ripped off like that |

Wow Blair - you bring up names and magazine I haven't heard about or thought about in years. I well remember Toy Shop and FAJ and pretty sure I got a few things from Jack Calderone. I used to be able to get FAJ at Barnes and Noble but the store in Bismarck stopped carrying it and I it was one I really didn't want to subscribe to. I recall some articles in a few publications about the scam artist out of Colorado - he did make things sound very appealing. The Herpa display is nice - looks like it would work very well with the older, smaller Matchbox models or say the Oxford Diecast cars which I really keep trying to avoid.

You would be surprised sometimes at how much diecast you might find at a model train show. For example EFSI models were sold by Scenery Unlimited, a model railroad firm out of IL as S gauge vehicles

the best display case would be to get the ones that Matchbox used to display the 75 in stores Or similar BUT expect to shell out high dollar for those |
