The Quest Continues
My recent 1941 Chevy pick-up post was moved here. Never knew this topic area existed! Must have seen it, but never actually "saw" it.

So...just took our summer vacation and drove the 1989 M-B 260E, which ran flawlessly. It turned 175,000 miles on the trip. It uses oil, but other than that, it's nice. Can't buy cassette tapes any more though. Actually had a couple comments and compliments on it this time. I guess it's starting to look like a survivor? Not sure. Wife thinks it still looks new. This shot was taken in Gloucester, Massachusetts. I like proving that I can spell Massachusetts.

Beautiful car! At 175,000 miles it's just getting broken in!

To me, the W124 (and W126) is the absolute pinnacle of Mercedes Benz, it's been all downhill from there!!
One of those is definitely on the list for my next car, I've always wanted one.

You don't see the 260E as much, I love it!!

Sweet ride!

I hear you on the tapes. All 3 of my rides have cassette players. Lucky for me I kept my tape collection and bought a box of 12- TDK SA-90's (just before they stopped making them) to make mixed tapes from LP.

I am biased, but agree! Both the W124 and W126 looked good, and were built well. I was actually looking for a W126 (searched for a black 420SE) when I found this car. The fact that the 260E was kinda rare was one of the things one guy said (during this vacation) to break the ice in conversation. He was right. Supposedly, some customers didn't care for the "260E" badge on the trunk (I guess they wanted a "300E"?), so M-B changed it to "300E" (on the left side of the trunk), and affixed a "2.6" badge to the right side. Problem solved (sort of). I also believe they had a "300E 2.8" at one point - before the letters started preceding the numbers in the later W124 series cars (they were made until 1995). In a purely graphical sense, I think 260E looks more interesting than 300E (if that makes any sense).

If you want one, you better hop to it! Good ones are getting harder to find (at least here in northeast US). Someone else came up to me in a parking lot and said their W124 (they weren't sure which model) didn't look as good as mine! In fact, mine is kept in the garage during winter (and most other times too!), which helps a lot.

Smart move on the TDK tapes. I still have all of mine too, but don't bring them along anymore. No real reason, but they tend to stay at home.

That's interesting, I didn't know that!

But you're right good ones are getting harder to find. I'm still kicking myself for not jumping on one I found recently on my local craigslist. A gorgeous white on blue coupe, very well kept for only $3500!!! Such a bargain, and a rare sight in this little podunk midwest town I'm currently living. I didn't have the cash at the time, but dang. It sat on craigslist for a long time which surprised me... I guess the folks around here aren't used to high quality automobiles and didn't know how to take it hahaha

Something that is truly amazing is what Kelly Blue Book says these are worth. Last time I checked, when all data were plugged into their online value calculator, it said the car was worth between something like $700 and $1,200. This makes no sense whatsoever to me, but I may be wearing rose colored glasses where my car is concerned.
