Hi all,

I won an auction of 50 miscellaneous cars. I only wanted 1 car so I asked the seller if he could just send the one car to me. He said, "no, the cars are already packed and sold as a lot". The shipping for 50 cars is $13.50. The auction price was $10.49. I told him to do whatever he wanted with the rest of the cars. But he said that the cars are packed and they are sold as a lot and his position has not changed. Brrr! Kinda cold. I can't pay $24.00 for one car. He is not making anything off the shipping. What is his deal?! Views?

Support your local demo derby.

Was this one auction or multiple auctions with one seller? If the seller listed as one 50 car lot of misc then you should have realized that when bidding.

Yeah, he has no idea if you're an unreasonable person who will cry foul and say that you were cheated and only sent one car. Paypal usually sides with the buyer, so if you were to then send a picture of a tiny package with the guy's address, Paypal would probably refund you and the guy would be screwed out of the postage and the value of the one car.

While it would be nice to just pay shipping on the one car, the seller has no reason to believe you're a reasonable person with all the idiots on ebay. The auction was for 50 cars and that's what you'll get. You shouldn't have bid if you weren't prepared to pay for the terms as presented.

Sorry I don't have the sympathy you're looking for.

You bid on a lot of 50 cars. Why on earth you think you should be able to receive just one, I don't know. I'm sure the seller wants to be rid of the other 49 as well.

Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
If it was me, I would have held out until the car I was looking for came up by itself. In the meantime, why not just flip the cars you don't want and make your shipping costs back that way? That way, you get the car you desired, someone else may want something you got but don't need, and everybody goes home happy.

Logically, it should work that way. But just my luck, every time I have done this, it has cost me a lot more. So, everybody was not happy. I once paid $80. for a lot of 169 cars. When I took my one car out and tried to re-sell the lot, I got $29. What happened?! I don't know. It's still tough to talk about.

In a perfect world you could have asked the seller *before* the end of the auction. He probably still would have said no, but it can't hurt to ask.

I do have to ditto a lot of what was said though, ebay is tough on sellers. It keeps them honest. Part of that is dealing with less than honest buyers...and that has already been pointed to here. The auction was for 50 cars...you won and got 50 cars. I don't personally see the problem.

When I bid on the Harry Potter car, it was in a set with a wrecked box. I did tell the seller I wasn't interested in the playset and she was welcome to give the set to a local child, I still paid full price including shipping, I asked for no discount (and I was happy to pay the auction price for such a rare car). If you had asked for only one car but still paid the shipping for the whole lot, perhaps the story would have been different?

Oh, sure. If I paid for the shipping of 50 cars. And I did ask before the end of auction before I bid. He said that he was only selling them as a lot. I thought that was because he was hoping that several bidders would see cars they wanted and the end price would have been higher than fifty cents over the opening bid. Maybe he was bitter that the auction didn't yield as much as he'd hoped.

Then I don't know what else to say. I've passed on many pieces I would love to have because I didn't agree to the terms. I've skipped over "paypal only" sales because I don't have paypal and I'm not about to sign up.

As a buyer and seller on E-Bay I agree with Hobie.

The terms were for a lot. Bidding on ebay is a contract. The seller is bound to that contract as much as you are if you bid. If you had asked before bidding, the seller could have ended the listing early, listed the one car for you and then the rest back up, and perhaps you could have bid. I did have once where I was watching something and snoozed past the end of the listing that nobody bid on. I messaged the seller and lamented that I forgot to bid. He relisted it as a buy it now at the starting auction price just for me and I snagged it. He didn't have to do this, but the fact I already had over 1500 feedback at 100% positive and messaged him nicely convinced him I was a good buyer. He was under no obligation to take a chance on me though.

When people list lots, there can also be many reasons for doing so as opposed to listing individually. Maybe they don't really know much about cars and/or just want to sell them and hopefully get a little money while getting them out of the way with the least hassle. Individually packing cars to mail takes time that maybe they don't have. Maybe they know there's some good stuff in there and they want to make some junk go away that they know will never sell otherwise. If they let people pick out stuff individually they'd sell some stuff and still be left with a pile of things they don't really want to throw away. It happens all the time on ebay, at flea markets, and I've done it myself. I buy lots on ebay to get cars I want and get stuff I don't often as well. I have to weigh if it's worth it for the things I want with or without being able to offload the rest. Maybe I sell the leftovers at pennies, maybe I bundle them in to a lot of my own, maybe I see about giving them away.

If you see a lot with something on ebay, at the flea market, or at a garage sale, you can ask before someone has bid or bought it, but you should be prepared to buy the whole thing or walk away.

As someone who has sold lots before, I don't even always care about the money. Sometimes I just want the cars out of my house. You shouldn't bid on lots that you do not want. It's really very simple.

Do you have a link to the auction? Post the other cars in the lot...I can almost guarantee others here would be interested.

I made a deal with russ7865 to turn the situation into a Win! Win Win deal all around for everyone involved. In fact, I already have all 50 cars in hand as of this afternoon. :)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MIXED-LOT-OF-50-VINTAGE-LOOSE-CARS-TRUCKS-amp-OTHERS-HOT-WHEELS-MATCHBOX-ETC-1-/322286346150?hash=item4b09c35fa6%3Ag%3A4cAAAOSwzaJX-BBZ&nma=true&si=zprL8%252FoMI65le%252B2I6Ea9WNHf1UQ%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

I will be sending russ7865 his cargo van and made my selection of 4 'Vettes, the glow in the dark red Merc, the Lesney tipper so far and the wheel sets from most of the nascar ones and 5 dot HWs. Put aside a few for Randoms game castings want list and have three people I am already trading with - reviewing the other 35 or so castings for their interests. All of them are play worn and some are missing wheels or broken.

So as not to turn this into a 'sales thread" I will post up the remaining ones in the car lot bay after my trading partners have made their choices.
