Dodge Dakota Rumble

I have a question for you guys about your preferred engine sound? Rumble or quiet.

Here's the story, my old 2004 Ford F150 that I purchased in Dec. 2003, came up with a problem that made me decide I would no longer keep repairing the truck, that was this past Thursday night Nov.10 2016, just short of 13 years, and about 256,000 miles later.

Anyway, yesterday I bought a 2011 Dodge Ram Dakota Bighorn crew cab, (I believe 2011 was the last year for Dakota's), but the previous owner modified things with a dual exhaust system which creates that powerful sounding rumble , ...(don't know that it is powerful, since it has a 3.7 V6, and I don't drive crazy to check it)... the dealer offered to change it back to the original type at no charge, because I kind of had issues with the rumble, since I was so used to quiet of my old Ford. Need to decide early this week, hmmm, what to do.....

You see, it sounds cool to me at times, so I like it then, but other times I get a little frustrated with the constant noise.

Below is my new ride sitting next to my old Ford, which technically is no longer mine since I traded it in a manner of speaking, but the dealer was kind enough to give me a few days before he towed it away so I could empty/transfer all my tools over.

I prefer loud exhausts on sporty cars, appliance cars and utility vehicles should be quieter. I don't care much for the sound of a V6, but I6s and flat-6s sound great. Some crossplane V8s sound good, some sound horrible, but this is largely due to the exhaust pulses interfering (log exhaust manifolds ftl). I4s, flat-plane V8s and crossplane V8s with 180° headers sound lovely. I5s sound nice at WOT, but sound like broken UPS trucks at idle.

Rotaries always sound good, especially if you like the sound of a misfiring snowmobile at idle.

Ultimately neither loud nor rumbly are indications of power. Rumble/burble is caused by exhaust pulses interfering (typical in flat-fours and crossplane V8s) and loud is caused by ineffective muffling. Buzzy high-end typical of high revving small displacement engines can be tuned out by a well-engineered system, as can rumble; what remains can be muffled or resonated as the user sees fit.

V8's burble, rumble and roar.
I6's and V6's gabble, babble and yammer.
I4's and V4's wheeze, buzz and honk like a goose.
V-Twins blat, pop, burp and rattle and hiss.

One-lungers sound like a Toro mulching mower.

V4s sound more like V8s or flat-fours than I4s, here's an old Ford V4 in a Saab Sonett.

Ah, as much I tend to be abstract a lot, I'm way below average when it comes to picking up on other people doing it.

Unrelated, this V6 Camaro sounds pretty nice.

A rumble sounds cool, but it can be annoying having to listen to it all the time. My previous car was a Neon R/T that the previous owner had put a louder exhaust on it. It did sound nice even as a 4 banger, but longer trips of an hour or more would get fatiguing. Maybe you have some longer drive or batch of errands you can give it a whirl.

How many short trips do you make? My neighbour has a loud truck and after a while it becomes a nuisance. Once though a vehicle gets rolling it generally quiets among cruising speeds. Remember driving a machine like that draws attention from the police too. So if you have a heavy foot that isn't good. Personally I don't care. My stang is loud and in order to appreciate the music it needs to be played at full volume. I personally think by your narrative you would be happier with it quiet.

Personally, I prefer a loud exhaust and no stereo at all. I can listen to music at home where I can give it the attention it deserves. I guess it depends on what one listens to though, some music works as background noise, and other music demands full attention.

Thanks all for your thoughts on it, it is quite a dilemma for me though since I'm generally a pretty quiet guy, and I don't usually like noisy things, but while driving around during the day I find myself really liking the sound of this truck, but then there is the floor vibration which I don't like at all when I notice it, and next thing I know evenings comes and driving down a quiet street and then wishing that I had a way to switch it off, even though it is probably not as load as all that, and probably more throaty sounding on the outside while driving than the rumble sound I'm hearing inside.

Daniel is probably right about it sounding more like I would prefer quiet, but then again, meeting friends for dinner this evening to see my new truck, they both said they really loved the sound of it, and another friend yesterday thought it sounded awesome as well.....ahh, but I know they aren't the ones driving with it all the time.

The friend yesterday told me the guy probably paid like an extra grand to make it sound that way, and here I am not sure whether to keep it like that. :D

Nothing good ever happens after midnight.
I put some Flowmasters on my Fleetwood and it sounds really nice. Not obnoxious, but you know you're driving a V8. I guess it comes from my parents having a GTO and a GT350 when I was a kid...the rumble is in my DNA.
I do love the sound of a Subaru Boxer when it has the performance exhaust-it sounds like a V8 at full throat!

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!
I prefer quiet, personally. And this is coming from someone with a Mustang GT. A car I've kept bone stock since the V8 is just throaty enough for my liking - I don't need an obnoxious exhaust that most other Mustang owners seem to need.

If you don't like the floor vibration, that's what might drive you nuts when you notice it 10 minutes into a longer drive.

Interestingly enough, the 'consumer grade' Subies and the STi both use equal length headers that kill the rumble, only the WRX has an exhaust that produces the characteristic rumble. I believe the BRZ/FR-S/86/GT86 cars use an exhaust like the WRX, cuz usually they sound plenty rumbly.

That throaty rumble is why I switched the sounds for my race car in rFactor from V4 sounds (derived from the Porsche LeMans car) to an 80s I4 F1 engine. The V4 grunts and snorts, the I4 screams like a banshee.

Curious thing, I was looking underneath at the exhaust system, and nothing really looks different than any other, except for the chrome tailpipe pieces, so I was thinking to ask a mechanic at the dealer tomorrow if it was simply the muffler itself that would need be changed out.....If that was the case, then I may just put up with vibes inside for awhile to see if I really might just get used to it, and I can have them change the muffler at a later time if it starts to drive me insane.....That shouldn't cost too much then.

LOVE the sound of my 88 Mustang 5.0, when the top is down I never turn on the radio....LOL

My 85 2.3L 4 sounds a little tough with it's tube header but fairly quiet. Now the Crown Vic I drive is ultra quiet.

The practical side of me says if the new exhaust is stainless steel - its lifetime - so leave it.

So, what did you end up doing?

I haven't heard a 3.7 V6 exhaust before, but let me tell you...I bought a new car (99 Buick Regal GS) last week that is identical in just about every way to the car it replaced (00 Buick Regal GS)...my old Regal had a Borla muffler and custom piping, and it sounded ok for what it was...the 3800 V6 isn't known for ear pleasing exhaust notes.

But jeez, maybe I'm just getting old...but the quiet exhaust in my 99 GS is a TON nicer.

Well, I scheduled with the dealer to have it changed on this coming Monday, with the window down moving at slow speeds I loved it, but faster the sound inside is not so pleasant, to me anyway, my cab on my old Ford muffled all loud outside noises tremendously, but not this one. Anyway, the dealer is also going to strip the front window tint for me, it's hard to see out at night, and I'm not sure this dark is even legal in this state, the back seat windows will stay dark for now, since I keep it full of work tools, and you can't really see in.

I'm sure I'll be pleased with quiet, though I have no idea how the truck is going to sound once that exhaust is changed out.

Today the rumble became a thing of the past, as well that I can now see out of the front windows easily.yay

I've only driven it a few miles from the dealership so far, so cannot really say how happy I'll be with the simpler quieter sounds of just the V6 while driving a steady speed for some distance, the rumble would really annoy me at those times.

Seeing through the windows; I can already say I'm quite happy to see my side mirrors when backing or changing lanes, and now I wont have to roll down the windows at night while continuing from a stop sign.

Thanks Hobie, I am quite happy, although now I can hear the different little quirks of a Dodge engine, hopefully normal sounds, but never owned a Dodge or uh, Ram truck before, so no reference.....Not to sound dissatisfied again, because I am pleased so far.
