How to report a fraudulent seller on the 'bay?

I can't access at work, but when I get home I need to report a fraudulent seller on ebay.

Seller has multiple listings he is selling as "from the estate of Roy Nakamura." This is promoted heavily in his listings of pre-pro models. Pre-pros are easily faked, so it is important to me as a collector to make sure they are what they are being sold as, and using the name of a late and well respected name in the collecting community to promote one's sales is OK if it is true...but if the seller is unwilling to *show* they are from such an estate then they are simply profiting on the man's name...which in my mind is way less than ethical.

I sent an email request 3 days ago that went unanswered...it read:

"Greetings! I am very much interested in this lot, and possibly any other High Speed castings. I see you have them listed as having belonged to Roy Nakamura, do you have any way to validate that and would you supply some validation with the lot?

Thank you."

I received no response, which I find is typical of someone with something to hide. I had an outstanding bid on one of his collections of pre-pros, and it is set to end today, so I wrote another email last night:

"Friendly reminder, as it is important to me. Your ad states clearly these were in the collection of the late Roy Nakamura, can you demonstrate this? It matters a great deal to me as to how I will bid. If you cannot show they are from Mr. Nakamura, I must presume they are not, and should be priced accordingly. If I win the auction, I must insist on some form of provenance to support your claim. I am being polite and respectful, I do hope you will receive this request in that manner, and reply in a timely manner before the end of the auction. Thank you."

Seller responded by cancelling my bid. By cancelling my bid and not responding to my polite requests, I am convinced that the seller is not honest, and is attempting to profit by dropping the name of a respected and now deceased member of the collecting community. This is an outrage and must be reported.

Seller goes by "tbonehw76"

I encourage all collectors who enjoy pre-pro type issues to request provenance on *any* such items they seek to buy, as the possibility of fakes is just too great.

Recently I bought a piece from a different seller, who responded to my request, and lo and behold it turned out to be a very familiar name in the business, and I have since bought more from him. I likely would have done the same with the fraudulent seller had he been honest or at least replied, but his reply was to cancel my bid. That tells me a GREAT deal about his character, and I will strongly recommend buyers beware of that seller.

When you're looking at a listing, there's a "Report Item" link on the right side just above the standard "Description" and "Shipping and Payments" tab. Click that and it will have a bunch of choices on categorizing the issue and have a chance to put some text why you're reporting specifically. I do this occasionally with bootlegs of vintage game things that I come across.

I would temper my response report to ebay with the fact that you asked for reassurance of the source validity and the seller instead cancelled your bid as your report objective.

He appears to be a long time seller (2002) with 100% feedback, but not many sells (1300) and only a few followers, but I dont look at ebay very often and was discouraged from further use of the site about the same time as this guy joined - so my perspective is that I am already biased against ebay.

I would follow up asking why he cancelled your bid if the piece is within your price range value for it without the provinance.

Thanks guys, and yes the price at which I was winning was within what I considered reasonable without provenance, and my pending bid reflected that.

I intended to focus on my request for validation of his claim and subsequent retraction of my bid in response to my request. Not sure what good it will do. Since the emails were through ebay, there is a record in their program that I can point to...none of my attempts were outside.

While I do not do ebay his lack of response and canceling your bid would raise all sorts of red flags with me.

I'm surprised to didn't reply with some sort of a lie at least, or truth if there had indeed been some sort of legitimate reason he didn't have authentication, but the good thing is that at least this way he might have saved you getting cheated by a fake.

While that is strange, it's certainly not proof that he is committing fraud. He may just be incredibly rude and unwilling to deal with a buyer that wants any extra effort. You can try reporting the item, but you may not get far. eBay makes you jump through hoops to do so, trying to find a specific pre-set reason for a report. I don't know if they will let you submit a free-form report.

They didn't let me explain free-form, and their list of options was too vague to match my complaint, so I used the generic "fraud" expecting to be able to explain but no opportunity was offered. Worse, I have yet to hear from the 'bay, so at this point I presume they aren't going to bother. Things have come a LONG way from when they pulled my ads when I didn't know any better and used a famous builder's name or called a generic knife by a trademarked name....double standard, in my view.

I'll just block the seller and use this as a teaching moment for anyone willing to listen.
