Can't say I have ever seen a real Wrangler Islander package except for photos online. Who knew Wranglers would look good in yellow. I think this is now my 12th GL Wrangler casting in my collection counting the Jurassic Park Wrangler seen here in another thread.

Great photos of a neat model!

Ryan, if I may I'd like to pose a question to you, as you seem to be the type of collector that GL is aiming for with it's Jeeps.

I don't collect Jeeps, but I do collect some GL. I was very tempted to get at least one of the various versions of this Wrangler, but one feature held me back from buying any - and that feature being the way they did the roll-cage where it meets the front windshield. For me, the design / configuration used, just wasn't realistic enough. The casting itself is gorgeous, but that roll-cage windshield configuration just bugged the crud out of me. With everything else done so nicely, the roll cage windshield area just seems sloppy. Personally I would think it would be an easy fix on GL's part but what do I know about production of diecast.

I'm curious as to your opinion as a Jeep fan of this. Does it bother you? I just find it odd that I've not seen many complaints in regards to this, but there always seems to be other complaints about other GL issues. Please understand I'm not trying to complain or knock this casting, I'm just curious as to what the Jeep fans have to say about it. Maybe I'm just being anal about this. If it was a Land Cruiser I'd still buy it, but I'd also probably drop GL a letter or email in regards to it.

I believe we had this discussion before when this casting first became available. Specifically the first time it was issued without a hardtop or convertible top (Clueless release if I remember correctly). I don't believe anyone from Greenlight production chimed in at that time. Anyway I suspect their reasoning for odd placement of the front roll bar is because of the top options they graciously gave us for this casting. There are holes atop the windshield where I believe the tops have pegs to fit into. There are holes at the rear at each corner of the body for top fitment also. I do sort of wished they had handled the roll bar much like MBX did with their Wrangler. The Wrangler from Matchbox has a 'floating' roll bar where it meets the windshield. However the Matchbox's windshield and roll bar can be fragile. And Matchbox was not issuing their Wrangler casting with a removable hard top or convertible top. So they never had to plan for roll bars that could be cleared by tops or provide holes for said tops to attach to.

As to my opinion on this execution of the roll bar. It does not bother me all that much. I tend to be forgiving when dealing with small scale. I take into consideration the casting itself which alone is particularly nice. I appreciate it's diminutive size. The 87-95 Wranglers are pretty small. The attention to detail of graphics and trims. Greenlight replicated both roll bar designs. Though this casting has had its share of quality control issues. Mainly body paint issues. Also in consideration is Greenlight's faithfulness to replicating all the different packages that were available on the 87-95 Wranglers (Renegade, Sahara, Islander). Their attempt to create removable hard top and convertible top options is something not seen often in small scale. Not to mention tops can be swapped among the models. Though I have never attempted to take one off. I also appreciate that Greenlight tooled up model specific wheels for this casting which I don't believe any other manufacturer of small scale Wranglers has done before save Greenlight's own JK Wrangler.

There are many other Wranglers available in small scale. Though I believe most of those are mostly later TJ and JK models. The Matchbox TJ for one. I think Maisto did a rather nice TJ. And if I remember correctly Tomica has done a TJ or JK also. Those all may be better than Greenlight's YJ, but they are not YJs. If you are really looking to add this casting to your collection the one to get would be release with the hardtop or convertible top in place as the front roll bar issue is less noticeable.

Great pix- I agree it would have been nice if they did something better with the roll bar/windshield... still a great model though.

Ryan, thank you for taking the time to respond.

As I said, I'm not trying to be critical of the model, as GL has done an outstanding job on their recent releases & I really like it otherwise.

I appreciate hearing what a Jeep enthusiast like you has to say, and I'm glad to hear that the model has met with such acceptance and success.

Great discussion here everyone. I must say Ryan hit most of the points for the roll bar right on. We didn't want to have a "floating" roll bar that went to nowhere. We also have multiple windshields and tops which created several design problems with it attaching in a straight line. I can say that our tooling engineer wishes it was straight as well but in order to have the flexibility to have all the different removable tops, this was our outcome. We rather like this casting as well and our designers have done a great job offering all the period correct decal packages and paint colors. We hope you all enjoy this one as much as we do.

Happy holidays to you all!

Merry Christmas Matt and all. I've commented on this casting before and I have only one copy so far. I plan on getting the red/silver car and making small "Fillers" to join the windshield and roll bars. I've owned a real YJ and I'm currently looking for another. Even on the 1:1 Wrangler, these roll bars are a pain. They secure to the windshield with "Tork" nuts like many other componets. When changing from soft to hard top the bars must be removed so door hardware can be installed. The nuts are often stripped or frozen in place. Matt: a satin finish Sahara would be nice.

Matt, thank you for the "insider's perspective!"

It's great to know the reasons behind why things are the way they are.

Satin finish Sahara. Ok, I'll throw that on the idea list. Merry Christmas to you all as well!
