Not really. The retailers are responsible for distribution and there is not apparent consistency to it at all.

Anecdotally though we have a certain Texan here who seems to have all the shiny new things before everyone else :P

I don't know where in St. Louis, probably one of the suburbs, but somewhere in St. Louis is normally among the first in the country, at least judging from Ebay listings. Z28HO can attest to how bad MO is in general though. I don't know why only one tiny section of St. Louis gets stuff and the rest doesn't, but someone somewhere there gets stuff first pretty regularly.

In general with all brands, there is really no rhyme or reason. I think it might depend which port gets the shipment. Sometimes stuff shows up on the East coast and spreads West, sometimes vice-versa. But particularly with Hot Wheels, it seems more often than not it starts in the middle of the country and spreads out in either direction. I know I have uncommonly good luck here in Fort Worth, and I see stuff show up in Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Oklahoma, etc. before other areas. But it also depends on the retailer's distribution system. The outer areas of the biggest metro areas seem to be best. The closer you get to the middle of a metro area it seems the worse it gets. And outside of the big cities there isn't much rhyme or reason. Inventory levels probably also play a big part.

Not really, he is just misunderstood. I dont live that far away from him and our retailers never have the same assortment he finds.

:)

I rarely check anywhere in Denton since I really only drive through a few times a year, but it always amazes me the difference between Fort Worth and Dallas. Maybe it's just because I don't know the area as well, but I never find anything current in Dallas. It also probably helps that the Mattel distribution center is in Fort Worth.

LOL...the cat's out of the bag now!

I've been lucky a handful of times around here, but usually we are among the last to get anything.

I have a couple of things in my collection I bought in Denton! Not Hot Wheels or diecast.....but still, even a northerner (I still lived in Alaska in those days) found something "new" in Denton, TX! (At an antique mall......that is.)

All I know is the 4 WM's and 3 Targets I go too take forever to get new stuff and only 1 TRU close to me. Must be guys getting to the store early in the day and know when the stores get restocked.

Mattel has multiple factories all over the world. Right now they make them mostly in Malaysia and Thailand. There are also multiple distribution centers in the US. Depending which factory made it and which distribution center is getting them, I imagine they regularly ship to a few different ports. But they will go to Mattels distribution center first. From there they ship directly to hobby accounts (hobby dealers get cars first because they have one less step in the distribution chain) or to a retailers distribution center. The retailers distribution center will then figure out who needs them most based on historic sales data, orders placed by the stores themselves and current inventory levels. So in theory the closer you are to a distribution center the faster you will see them in the store, but there are way too many variables for that to be a hard and fast rule.

I live 6 miles from the Mattel distribution center (and Mattel store) and about 10 miles from a Walmart distribution center. So this helps me get things quicker usually, but I also know which stores around me to check and which not to bother with.

My Walmart here in SW Va. went from being horridly behind on Matchbox, to right up to date with them. They're up to date or slightly behind on HW. Food City is a year behind, at least! Same goes with other smaller chains and small businesses--one store was 20 years behind here! Grant's, which had taken over an empty former Acme Market, had them. I guess they found an old case in the old building.

It really depends on a store to store basis, and how they sell.

In theory it shouldn't make a whole lot of difference for time from distribution center to store. Having driven truck from coast to coast I know a tag-team of drivers can go from mid Florida to Los Angeles in about 3 days if they push. Point being, especially with multiple Wally distribution centers (I know of two in my region), there shouldn't be more than a couple days difference between any two given locations within a region...so that's where the rest of your theory comes into play.
