JDM Datsun anyone?

The Datsun Fairlady 2000 was designed by Hot Wheels designer Jun Imai, this is the latest Datsun to come out of Mattel after the nostalgic 510 and 240z. Of course if you want to include the pickup let’s not forget the Datsun 620. The picture above however did not originally come like that.

Due to lacking in detail up front, I decided to add a little color and here I included the original and the customized one for comparison.

I tried to use a black sharpie fine tip to create the front grill after painting it with silver but the black was coming out uneven so I decided to paint it over with silver and it tone down the black to where it seems to even out.

Of course you can’t have just the front without doing something at the back so...

And of course I added some silver to the racing mirrors as well.

The thing I don't understand is why the roundel on the hood and sides when there are no numbers on it as if the paint job is unfinished.

Didn't I read here at Swifty's recently that the roundels are realistic, in that the drivers/racers put the numbers they're assigned for that particular race/rally (whatever) on the blank roundel? (I know nothing about this other than having a recollection that someone mentioned why they're blank.....) Perhaps you're just commenting that HW could have put a number in there and it would have looked more "complete"? But then, isn't HW also planning on issuing decal sheets so collectors can 'customize' their models (or am I mixing brands here)?

Meanwhile, your detailing looks really good. I have been a fan of HW JDM models even though they're outside my collection's scope. There's just something about these Japanese cars that is really appealing....(and it has nothing to do with my having owned a Honda Accord at one time.....not exactly a JDM car I guess....)

Yup, most races you get a number for that race, so it changes.

A decal sheet would be nice to personalize your Datsun.

Oh I didn't know that the cars originally came with just roundel and that they place the number later. In that case then I am fine with that. :)

It was news to me, too, but it makes sense and it adds some realism to the model rather than every model issued having the same number forever..... What we really need isn't water-slide decals, but re-useable number stickers so you can change the number for every Dakar or Baja rally your imagination enters your car in. There are many labeling products that use 'removable/re-useable' glues....so why not?

When I was researching the 6 Daytona Cobras I came up with 36 different numbers over 2 years of racing.

Ah, they already did it! Fantastic!

(I think, however, that those HW stickers in the pack on the left are a little teensy bit too big for l'il ol' Herbie... :P )

Are you gonna keep all those 'extra' sticker packs or make some of them available to collectors? (I'm not asking for me.....just wondering what one would do with so many extras--heck, I can't give my triplicates and quadruplicates away at Halloween because not enough kids 'trick or treat' around here. So I feel stuck with too many cars I have too many of....)
