The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

Today's car of the day is Matchbox's Whitlock Dinkum Dumper. The original was introduced around 1962.

Posted Image

The model was one of their Major packs. This was a range of larger vehicles, mainly trucks, diggers, combine harvesters, about twice the size of the current miniatures.

Posted Image

The model was introduced in 1962 and withdrawn in 1967 when the major range was discontinued. (Some majors continued as King size models and so were available for longer.)

The models are from Chris.P’s collection.

Whitlock were a large UK producer of earthmoving equipment. Nearly as common as JCB in their day.

They were early developers of articulated dump trucks (ADTs) This used a skid unit from Ford. Basically a Fordson tractor without the front axle. Some accounts state that a Ferguson tractor skid unit was used for this model other descriptions mention Ferguson wheels. Many of their other vehicles were based on Ford products.

The front unit was clothed in glass fibre panels and a simple roof was fitted. There were no doors, heater or roll over protection. Only the front wheels were driven. Later model from Whitlock has hydrostatic 4 wheel drive.

This one is naked.

Around 2-300 were made. I can’t find picture or details of any preserved dumpers.

Wikipedia

An articulated hauler, articulated dump truck (ADT), or sometimes a Dump Hauler, is a very large heavy duty type of dump truck used to transport loads over rough terrain. The vehicle usually has all-wheel drive and consists of two basic units: the front section, generally called the tractor, and the rear section that contains the dump body, called the hauler or trailer section. Steering is made by pivoting the front in relation to the back by hydraulic rams. This way, all wheels follow the same path, making it an excellent off-road vehicle.
Manufacturers include Caterpillar, Terex, John Deere/Bell Equipment, Moxy/Doosan, Volvo CE, and Komatsu Limited. With half of the global sales, Volvo is the market leader in the segment, and is also the prime pioneer of the vehicle, enabling its introduction to the markets in 1966.

Whitlock's first dumpers were more basic with a simple trailer tipper linked to the tractor based front. The steering was by hydraulic rams.

This is a fairly common model to find. The silver, metal, wheeled version is the earlier of the two. They were made before Matchbox introduced 'hydraulic' rams and so the tipper is loose. Its pivot is shared with the rear axle. They came with a steering wheel - one of mine has lost it. The front part appears to be made of 3 castings to allow the cab, base and seat unit to be realistic.

On my two the yellow varies a little, one is a bit yolkier than the other. Judging by the seat size etc it looks to be about HO scale. It sits happily with Siku's Volvo ADT that is made to 1/87 scale.

Cool! It took me forever to add this one to my Major Pack collection back in those days- probably in the early to mid '70's. :D It wasn't on my top ten want list so guessing that is why I didn't pick it up when it was actually available in stores. On a side note there is one of the Volvo dumpers for sale on the way to Mandan.
