is "civilian" cars..... But, out of 19 56-qt storage tubs dedicated to my Matchbox collection, at least 7 of them hold nothing but "civilian" vehicles, including commercial trucks and vans, taxis and buses, classic cars, sports cars, convertibles, and the like. Here's a photo I took last night of just one tubs' contents as I began to organize them as best I could: ![]() Of those 19 tubs, about 5 are dedicated to fire, police or EMS models (just Matchbox), quite a few filled with intact 5-packs, 9-packs or Mission Force sets (many never opened). Of course, in general I only purchase multipacks that contain fire, ems or police vehicles....which means almost every 9-pack I see gets consideration until I realize I already have multiples of the emergency vehicle of interest in that set. I have more than a dozen more tubs filled with mostly emergency vehicles from other brands....but there are also tubs devoted to Maisto and Motormax civilian cars/trucks. And some non-emergency vehicles from GreenLight and R2 brands.... I am aware I'm a neophyte compared to some of our collector community members....but my meager 6,000+ collection is enough to overwhelm most of the time. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 2000 3-inch/HO/1:64 and much-larger models displayed in my house....including the living room (mostly larger-scales), kitchen (on the tops of the cabinets), office/den, my bedroom, and of course the 3rd bedroom/"toy room". Maybe a little bit of OCD (nothing I've been diagnosed with, but I often wonder....)... I walk into a store that I know carries diecast, even when my purpose is to buy groceries or something else, and sometimes I just can't seem to leave the store without buying at least ONE new car. Today I had to pick up a few items at Walmart and second stop inside was the diecast aisle; noticed they had restocked the RC Mint "America's Finest" series (are there only 3 models so far in that series?), and I was about a fifth-thought away from buying a second white CHP Bronco so the one I bought last week wouldn't be lonely, before I put it back on the peg and left the store with only the items on my shopping list. Always, always, the object of my regular trek to the toy department/aisle in any store, is Matchbox. So when in these interim periods where nothing new has arrived for weeks (yes, I know, but I've admitted it many times before, I live in a remote Capital city (not compared to Juneau, of course) and yet I almost never miss getting the models I want from every batch in local stores) I have felt an urge to buy SOMETHING for my collection on many grocery trips. The non-emergency models I buy are mostly the 'licensed' 'normal' civilian cars and realistic trucks....and only if I find them particularly attractive. But sometimes I buy the "Matchbox originals" because it seems part of the tradition of Matchbox. (Oh, my first Matchbox model, bought around 50 years ago, was the Y4 Shand-Mason steam fire pumper....but that hooked me on Matchbox, not emergency vehicles. So I still have several of my 'normal' Matchbox cars from my youth.) Sorry, TMI....but the reason I posted and titled this such was because I really didn't realize/know how many non-emergency "civilian" vehicles I have.....I was honestly surprised at the quantities.... I have a mental mantra when approaching the toy aisle: "only emergency vehicles" repeated a few times, so sub-consciously I must have been aware I was buying "too many" non-fire rigs. That also may be a reason I buy ambulances and police cars....because I want more fire engines....but can't get more than there are, so I buy the next best thing. |

A 6000+ collection? Thanks for posting this, b2young. Now I don't feel so pressured to thin my 2000 (+ or -) collection.

6000+ sounds about right, but I don't have near as many out on display as I would like. Probably a generous 500 or so on display, all but about 5 confined to "my" room, and the rest in totes or cases between my room and the shed. Every once in awhile I sneak one to display in the bedroom...the wife tolerates it until the next time she feels the need to redecorate the room, +/- every 60-90 days, and I find my display car in some out of the way place, hidden, and I have to rescue it! (Been an ongoing game with "the Car" I picked up awhile back...started in the master bedroom and has now travelled through every non-water room on this end of the house... )

6000+? That's neither meager nor are you a neophyte, you're a seasoned pro. I may be up to 6000 by now, but I think I'm probably more likely closer to 5000. Probably half is on display at the moment. When I'm done redoing my display's, there will be room for around 3500-4000 cars and that will be it. The rest will be expunged. |

Nothing good ever happens after midnight.

I used to have about 3500-4000 of various scales of diecast. I was planning on making the finished basement of our old house a toy room, that my kids could play with when they got older. I would set up the Hot Wheels track and they would race their cars whenever they wanted. However, life got in the way, that "toy room" never got past the design stage (but the track was always set up!), and situations forced us to move into our current "Mondo Condo",which also has a finished basement. However, I'm not sure I want to display my cars now. I still have a few 1:18, and I kept many of my 1:87 for our Christmas train display, but I solely focus now on 1:64. I have about 2500, packed neatly in storage containers. All loose and free, because space is limited. I'd love to get a couple of glass store display cases, but trying to decide which cars would go in would drive me nuts. All of my carded diecast and various other scales went in a trade to a fellow who had a diecast shop here in my town. I probably got close to $US1000 trade in value for my collection. He got a lot of nice new inventory, and I got the opportunity to add some nice otherwise unobtanium for my collection! |

But Blair, it sounds like you just love little toy cars like most of us here, where sometimes we can't help ourselves when we see a diecast of great interest in the moment. Also sounds like you have about as many as me, well maybe, at least the 6000 number was an estimate I came up with for mine, though that was quite a few years ago, a few models have gone, but many more have been added too. My collection is quite a mix of every vehicle type, though types probably lean most heavily on emergency vehicles and trucks or vocational type vehicles, and I predominantly stay in the 3 inch range. |

I've sold a few during "in-room trading" at the Matchbox Gathering in Albuquerque....and will be trying that again next month. I'm grabbing the triples and more as I find them going through those tubs with the hope that someone else will be happy to find some of them MOC for $1. Giving them away at Halloween doesn't work so well here; my neighborhood has seen a decline in trick-or-treat-age kids in the years since I moved here...we're 'gentrifying', is what I believe they call it... Doug, you're right, I really just like the little cars. I noticed that most of what I buy is because I just plain LIKE the model....but as I dig through tubs and boxes I find ones I really have to scratch my head over...."Why did I ever buy THIS?!"..... Not ignoring your request, just still in the process of finding all I have. I so far notice I have few duplicates, so almost all of the various recent campers are unique liveries, meaning I'll have some fun showing off what I've collected, since I also DON'T "collect" variations.....

You're making me feel better.....but I'm also envious of your storage solution and organization....I'm just beginning to explore where and how to rack my tubs. Those short tubs (just big enough to hold a standard card, I see) are wonderful....wish somebody around here sold similar ones. I think I'll end up with somewhere around 45 of the 56-quart tubs....and if I can figure a way to fit them onto shelves in the garage, I'll have lots more living space in the house....which, of course, will just "free up space" to buy MORE......! |

xx3823 ...and counting! Mustangs, Shelbys, Cyclones - 2308 Ford F and C Series, IH Durastar - 1515 Basically all Castline, Greenlight, Johnny Lightning, Shelby Collectibles, Hot Wheels and a spattering of other accurately modern castings. No chippers or junk, all perfect all loose and free. Stored on 2 floor-ceiling 36" wide bookshelves, 10 shelves per cabinet. Jada 56 F-100s and Castline 56 F-100 Ground-Pounders displayed in a custom made wall mounted 18 shelf unit. All M2 Castlines are stored in acrylic cases also. Approximately 60 Jammer cases filled with Greenlight, Shelby Collectibles and Johnny Lightning, all in a specific order to ease locating. 50 Flambeau tackle-type containers for Durastar, and other oversized F-150/Trailer combos. All pieces are documented and photographed. All 1:18 (120+) were sold or given away. All 1:24 were given away. All other scales are packed away to be forgotten in my garage. Being a variation collector of only two models is still a task. My "To Come" list is growing daily, and sometimes a long-awaited Chase shows up. I curse the resurrection of Johnny Lightning. I have upwards of 500 JL Mustangs and Shelbys. Now they want to do it all over again. It has to STOP! Edited by Hosspower98, Jun 25 2017, 07:36 AM.
