Today's Car Of The Day comes from Brett's collection and is Maisto's 2005 Scion xB.

Posted Image

Wikipedia

The Scion xB is a compact car (subcompact car in its first generation) made by Toyota for the United States market and sold under their youth-oriented Scion brand. It is a box-shaped, 5-door hatchback.

For more information and pictures of the real car, please visit: Scion xB

Good riddance to Scion, discontinued last August after thirteen years (which was thirteen years too many). The ugly xB was just one of the many monstrosities to bear the Scion emblem.

Scion was a failure of epic proportions, made all the more obvious by just how long Toyota tried to keep it going. I rarely saw younger people driving these cars, but they did seem popular with the same people who bought Toyotas as a general rule (the same people Toyota was trying not to market towards).

On a side note, my hatred for these, Nissan Cubes, and Honda Elements is well-documented.

Posted Image

Wikipedia

The first-generation xB was a lightly modified and rebadged version of the Japanese-market subcompact Toyota bB. It was a small hatchback based on the Toyota Echo/Yaris platform. The xB was one of two models in the lineup of Toyota's US-exclusive Scion division present at the brand's 2003 launch, the other being the xA, based on the Toyota ist.

Only the first-generation models for both the xB and bB are related. Second-generation models are based upon different platforms.

To create the first-generation xB, the bB was modified from right- to left-hand drive, the front passenger area was also changed significantly with the bB's front bench seat replaced with bucket seats and the column-mounted shifter changed to a floor-mounted shifter.

The available drivetrains also differed. The bB was available with either the 1.3 L I4 2NZ-FE engine or the 1.5 L 1NZ-FE, mated exclusively to a 4-speed automatic transmission with available all wheel drive. The xB was only available with the 1NZ-FE that produced 108 hp (81 kW) and 105 lb·ft (142 N·m) in US spec, but offered both a 4-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. All-wheel drive was not offered on the xB.

The Toyota bB was not equipped with a spare tire. On the Scion xB, a compact spare tire was stored under the left side of a raised rear cargo floor. Since the spare tire raised the cargo floor by several inches, a storage bin was added to the right of the spare tire to reclaim some of the lost storage space. A jack was stored under the driver's seat of the xB.

The Toyota bB had a pull-out storage tray under the passenger seat that the xB lacks.

The bB went on sale in February 2000, whereas the xB went on sale in June 2003 for the 2004 model year. Sales of the first-generation bB ended in December 2005, whereas the first-generation xB ended sales in June 2007.

while I can agree this is a both hideous and a monstrosity, I actually liked the second gen version, and the tc could've easily passed as a celica replacement

That's not that bad. And to be fair, I think every Scion model that was around when the brand was axed continued life as a Toyota.

The Celica was never that ugly.

The Celica is sleek and sporty, while the tC is blocky and well...not very sporty at all. It looks more like someone's homemade Dodge Avenger coupe.

The Scion/Toyota Bb hasn't had a good modelling history.

This doesn't look good - that fat wheeled lowered look does nothing for me. The Matchbox, more stock version, was too big and didn't sit happily with it's contemporaries.

Maisto has the ability to produce some great models but sometimes they get carried away, at other times they forget things like interiors.

However it's good to see a range of models on COTD.

I'll come clean here - I did fancy a Nissan Cube at one time but they never released their proposed diesel version in the UK. Persuading Mrs P may have been a problem too.

If there was one good Scion, it was the FR-S (in my opinion). I didn't find the tC to be that bad, and I do like the (Corolla) iM - the successor to the Corolla Matrix. But I do agree that some of their models left me scratching my head - such as the xA.

tht tc was not ugly, but I guess h8rs gonna h8. anyway, if you want the tc to be better, just find a celica in a junkyard and take the engine/transmission , and swap them into the tc, problem solved.

The tC is ugly as sin. Swapping a Celica motor in solves nothing. A beautiful car can be made fast whether that be aftermarket or the ubiquitous small block Chevy swap, but an ugly car can never be pretty no matter what you do to it. I stand by my statement - the tC looks like a homemade Dodge Avenger coupe. There's nothing sleek or sporty about it, and that's why people stopped buying them. Look at that ridiculously high roofline. Sports cars are supposed to be low, not look like a Lego block on wheels.

As for the FR-S, it's a Subaru. Built by Subaru, motor by Subaru... the Scion is the rebadged Mercury Monarch to the Subaru's Ford Granada.

I was never excited about Scion as a brand. I felt Toyota should have just kept the cars under the Toyota badge. Yes, a lot of people dislike them, then and now... but I think hated is a little harsh.

The cars did have a cult following (especially the xB) and we had to turn back a lot of them during registration for Toyotafest during their highpoint in popularity - they were fun to customize (not my thing, but who am I to judge). Just do a Google search for Scion xB and you'll see what I mean.

tC's never bothered me. I don't think they are ugly by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think they are good looking either. I have no love for the xB though, but I do think they are aging better than I thought they would so I will give it that. But don't be dissing the Honda Element. Those rock. No, it's not good looking (but nor is it ugly, it's just there), but name another vehicle like it? I seriously considered one twice. Load up a pair of mountain bikes inside or a muddy dog, no problem. I have a friend who took his down to Big Bend and slept in it the whole trip, the perfect car for "camping" without really camping.

xB must stand for xtraBlocky!.

I'm another who's considered the xB hideous. Trucks and SUVs can make blocky work, but not cars.

Support your local demo derby.

I sat in one of these when they first debuted at the St. Louis car show. It had good head room. That's about it on positives.

yeah, that sure is ugly, and it's a goofy looking car to begin with... at least you could leave it running outside your local stop and rob and never worry about it being stolen.

No, seriously, explain this to me. How is it that a blocky, chunky eyesore can pass as a 'sporty' car. I don't understand this. It's not remotely sporty at all. It's just a compact coupe, like a Civic. The Celica was legitimately sporty in both looks and handling (with a legitimate racing heritage to boot). But I guess only a Lego collector like yourself could appreciate something with all the styling of a Lego block.

This isn't 'haters gonna hate', this is legitimate 'these cars are ugly, overrated pieces of absolute rubbish.' I defend a lot of cars that people dislike because the bandwagon says its okay to hate on them, and I'm just as quick to call it like I see it on cars that are overhyped. The tC is one of them.

Now I ask, is it okay for you to claim the Celica is 'an alien eyed water bug' yet I can't call the tC 'a homemade Avenger coupe'? What's good for the goose is always good for the gander.

The utility and versatility of the Element is not on trial here. It's looks are, but luckily for Honda the Nissan Cube came along and decided to be even uglier.

No one's right or wrong. It's all subjective. If this car/van thing serves people well, than good for them.

That being said, I had no idea I've been averting my eyes for 13 years!
I guess I've become blind to cars on the road now, and have even lost touch on how to identify them.
Survival mechanism I guess! lol

These always reminded me of refrigerators on wheels. However, the iQ was a total waste of car in my opinion. And the only xAs I see around here are plastered with hyper-political bumper stickers.

I never called the tC sporty, the last Celicas were maybe sporty by the absolute loosest definition, and the FR-S itself was done by Toyota. Only the motor was Subaru.
