Primarily my interest in EFSI is the Model T Fords. The association between Best Box and Mini Dinky has me seeking those two open wheel racecar models as well. If anyone would like to add other EFSI or Best Box (or Holland Oto), please be my guest.

Great photos Wes!

My only ones are later Efsi issues, although I do have this old van, while it is Efsi, I believe the casting may have originally been used as a Best Box issue.

It would be quite interesting to learn of that connection with the open wheel racers (and Mini Dinky) if you have anything to share on it.

The Best Box you see here was part of a trade I did some years ago. Not knowing anything at all about Best Box at the time, and only having just learned of the existence of the EFSI Model Ts (and not being terribly fond of open wheelers anyway), I'm somewhat surprised I still have this one. But I finally dug it out and took some pics beside the Mini Dinky version. I have the other Mini Dink as well, both are pictured in the database, and both have "Made in Holland" on the base, which alone is a pretty good clue. Best Box actually had a series of open wheelers, my guess is if things had gone differently the Lines Brothers may have incorporated more of the Best Box models into the line, there was certainly room among the assigned model numbers. I've also shown how the construction equipment Mini Dinky offered were castings that came from Gibbs / Lit'l Toy / Mercury USA, which in turn came (with some modifications) from Mercury of Italy. So a good chunk of the Mini Dinky line up was subcontracted. The autos were the ones the Lines Brothers engineers spent time developing, but the company folded before some of the models even made it to market.

I'm not terribly versed as to what exactly happened to Best Box, but according to Kimmo EFSI came out of that company with assistance from the Holland government to put coal miners back to work. As others here have mentioned in the past, the Model Ts in particular proved pretty popular with model railroaders as they scaled well and didn't require a great deal of modification to work well on layouts.

After Lines Brothers folded and with it Mini Dinky disappeared, Universal acquired the tooling for the construction equipment, but not the two racers (or to my knowledge any of the cars). I've not seen any of the Best Box open wheelers made under the EFSI (or Holland Oto) brand names, so where those tools ended up is anybody's guess at this point, but to my knowledge they have not resurfaced under any other brands. There are some interesting 60s era racers represented, but only the Lotus and Cooper were shared with Mini Dinky, and I wasn't certain if the paint and decos were the same or not. It appears at least for the Lotus that indeed they were the same, other than the company name cast on the base.

And some EFSI Land Rovers:

3 of them being promo models - dutch red cross, Land Rover promo and an austrian market promo with ÖAMTC (road side assistance club) livery. Not an easy one to find and it belongs to my personal "top ten favorite die cast models in my posession" list.

Thanks for that history Wes, I never realized Dinky contracted models, guess I figured they would be the ones people would go to to have models made, but then I suppose there regular line was of the larger scale stuff, and it was probably cheaper for them to subcontract than to do the small stuff themselves.
OMG...large scale Dinky is far more convoluted still, rights got split between France and someone else, so you have a period of French Dinky which are highly sought. Universal held the rights to the Dinky name for a while in the 80s, and that is how you end up with Matchbox models in Dinky packaging, Universal held both at the time. I think Dinky went on from there, and someone still today holds the rights, but I don't recall what has become of that. There are some footnotes I made in the "one of every maker" thread, I kept a copy in the Collector's Corner and pinned it for future reference. I've been copying it for use as a template for some other reference guides in that part of Swiftys. So I'm not entirely certain if Lines Bros held the rights to the large scale stuff or not, I believe they did, and when they folded the company was then bought by someone else (Kenner-Parker?) who in turn sold to Universal.

Companies contract models all the time. Yatming and Summer supplied a lot of different companies with models, often made with the contracted name on the base. Some examples are Imperial, Road Champs and Edocar, each of which started by contracting other companies to supply them, sometimes later creating their own or not. Imperial is a mystery...they are a toy company, not a diecast maker. Most of their models are attributed (typically Yatming with a sticker label on the base), but the final series is credited to Imperial though no one really knows who made them, and since the same models turned up with Buddy L branding it is fair in my opinion to still consider these models as having been contracted...but we still don't know by whom? They never showed up anywhere else where they could be easily pinned down. Nice models too! For a long time, the only 57 Ford available until M2.

Edocar likes to use Maisto, Road Champs used Yats, and later developed their own. Hartoy used others, I think again Yat. So the idea of contracting from others isn't new or unusual, it actually happened quite a bit.

Seeing all those Efsi Land Rovers and other emergency vehicles has me drooling again. Mostly I have a few Efsi fire rigs, including most of the Model Ts in Falck fire livery, and a set of 3 "dayglo" orange more modern fire rigs. Also have the Ford Transit as an ambulance.

Managed to find one Best Box model....a Commer fire engine. It was long on my "most-wanted" list (thank you, ebay).

Plan to retake some photos and add them to this thread a bit later this morning.

Here are the Falck Model Ts I have:

Wow - that is the first I have seen the Best Box #503 Commer Fire Appliance - that is an unique and wonderful piece Blair. I am guessing it is similar in size to the Matchbox regular wheels fire engines.

It's a bit smaller....two-and-a-half inches long.

Back in the eighties I 'flagged' it in Dr. Force's Miniature Emergency Vehicles (which still sits under my keyboard, along with the Coleman/Russell books--I have an original manuscript for Volume I of their books, as well as Vol II--) and it was added to my "most-wanted" list, which ebay made become a "have"....

I've managed to find MOST of that list, which was all based on what Dr. Force showed in the '84 book, but there are still some somewhere out there waiting for me to check ebay at the right day and time.

In Volume II of Coleman/Russell, they showed a photo of what they said had to be the smallest model/toy fire truck ever, held by the owner, a "fire chief in Alaska". It's really tiny (and no, I'm not the "fire chief" they referenced.....); I found the same one in an antique mall in San Diego some years later....and it is smaller than the z-scale white metal "railroad" models I've collected over the years, some of which are more like "charm bracelet items"). Curiously, it looks much like a Japanese fire engine. I think I showed them off here a few years back....I'll see if I can find that thread and give it a bump some time....

Another thing about that Best Box Commer.....note the duallies on the rear axle.....who goes to that extent any more? Even trucks that SHOULD have dual wheels, like a fire engine, generally came out in diecast with only one wheel on each side of the rear axle.
