A Trip Down Memory Lane- Rover Sterling

I don't think I've mentioned it very often around here, but I actually still have the first die-cast I ever remember owning and playing with as a child. As the title suggests, it's a Matchbox Rover Sterling. I couldn't have been older than 4 or 5 when my parents gave this one to me and it certainly shows today. This car has been through pretty much everything I could throw at it. Yet it survived, and it survived pretty well (except for the paint).

I recently added a mint version of the same release and one of the silver/blue cars and figured I would take some pictures. It's amazing how destructive children can be

:D

I remember when those hit the stores...I was fresh out of Uncle Sam's Canoe Club, living in the Ocean View section of Norfolk, Virginia.

I was thrilled when this one came out - more British cars to add to my collection. And yes, I also still have my first Matchbox model - a gift from my grandpa.

Of course I am just a little bit older than you...

Amazing memories. The cars from my early childhood are something I would never give up on. I was too little to remember myself, what the first car was, but I trust my dad's memory and have always kept a black Majorette Firebird as my first one. A MBX Sterling was also among the first ones I have ever had, and I gave it a full resto with new wheels (and a scratchless window piece from a stepped over donor) a while ago because it was still complete and I have a couple mint ones already.

Here is my childhood one after the wheels have been changed along with some other wheel swaps

It's also amazing how well the Matchbox car held up. It's a good quality piece. Here's another version:

I bought this model when it was new. Nice! I'll try to add a photo of it along with my very first Matchbox a bit later.

Edit: Here are the photos. The Ford Atkinson grit spreader is the very first Matchbox I ever got. My dad got it at the local toy store. Curiously, the second one was the Ford refuse truck (same truck platform). We then started to go to Simon's (toy store) when we had saved up another $0.55 to get another new model.

p.s. Love the wear and tear on your original Sterling. Shows you enjoyed it. Incredible how durable these things were/are.

These are interesting. I forget the term now, but it's from something like, "My First Matchbox." Is that right? I think I saw the Leyland pipe truck done similarly at one point. Maybe it was another truck. Not sure.

Edit: FWIW - just looked it up. Was thinking about the Volvo transporter truck in the "My First Matchbox" motif.

The one I have been wanting for a long time is the "Lasers" issue with British flag tampos. I haven't been lucky so far. The red one came in two different shades of metallic red and the silver one with or without "Rover Sterling" tampoes on the blue part of the sides.

Reminded me that I had the silver variation too (with "Rover Sterling").

In a nearby new subdivision I saw some Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars and construction rigs in the dirt on a corner slated for more houses/duplexes to be built in the next phase. Some young "collector" had been enjoying them in a 'natural environment' for a kid's imaginary world and left them when called to come home for dinner (or whatever).

It's why our treasured childhood toy cars can end up looking so well-loved....we play the heck out of them....in the dirt....and sometimes leave them out there when our minds change to some other pressing 'need'.

(I was happy on a subsequent walk thru the neighborhood to see they'd been picked up....hopefully taken home by their rightful owner....)

 Nice to know some kids still play "in the wild" with their diecast cars.
