Did i get your attention? Good, because itīs time to celebrate. Hereīs what i found: ![]() Why remarkable, you may ask? Because the Land Rover 90 has been with us for 30 years, so this icon deserves a little attention, imho. ![]() First released in 1987, made in Macau. I was 15 years old back then and Matchbox was clearly not on my radar, but many other things were. So 30 years later, i do appreciate this casting which was born during the Universal years, an era filled with great castings. ![]() The blue is made in Macau Green and red, i have with Macau and Thailand base, yellow with Thai base only, later made in China and then back to Thailand. In theory, there are different castings, since there were some adjustments over time. Early models feature "Land Rover Ninety" lettering, square Matchbox logo, 1987 as year of release and "Matchbox INT`L LTD" lettering. Later, logo changed to oval shape and "MATTEL Inc" lettering on the base. Models were still equipped with metal base and suspension, blanked out rear license plate. In 2008, models lost metal base and received a different plastic base and also no longer equipped with suspension. Back to square logo, "Land Rover 90" lettering on the base. Year of release is 2008 now. ![]() 2015 again some base and tow hook modifications, it lost itīs plastic roof too. A switch from plastic back too metal, now thatīs unusual ![]() So, this casting has some stories to tell and i hope weīll still see it in the future. Itīs a blast from the past and there are plenty of possibilities left for this one. It would be a perfect candidate for the "National parks" livery for example. A variation, high on my want list is the one from the British Airways set. My personal favorite: The crocodile hunter variation - rubber tires, metal base, full prints, need i say more? ![]() Edited by Tyrolese, Jul 13 2017, 07:07 PM.

Wow, 30 years already, Guess when you got something good there is no need to get rid of it. Great collection you have there, and thanks for the interesting facts about the casting. I too hope they keep them coming with this casting. I have a hunch that the metal roof change might have been done just to keep the parts count lower. I'd guess a little more metal is probably cheaper than the extra assembly time labor costs. |

This is a great casting and it's refreshing to see it still in the range after all these years. Have anymore pictures of the Crocodile Hunter release? Also I may have another that you're missing ![]()

Excellent collection! My notes say I have one like this:12-? Land Rover 90 "8" "Canyon" (yellow w/ black top) (w/box) (1999/China) So, "8" and "Canyon" would be printed on it. Will dig it out and upload a photo when I get a chance. Unfortunately, the "w/ box" may mean it's in the blister pack, and those boxes take more time to get to. Or, maybe I unboxed it. Will let you know. Just glad I may have one that is not shown here (yet). |

yes indeed a variation i am still missing, amongst many others. a closer look to the Landy from the "crocodile hunter" series. Equipped with real riders, metal base and full prints - to me the best of the Landyīs, followed by the New superfast version, which i do have, but not pictured here. ![]() |

Nice informative thread about the model. I only have a couple variations, usually pass then at flea markets because of bad condition but I really like the blue one from the 80's, most likely because it was one of my very first diecast cars as a kid. |
