Sounds similar to AMC's Gremlin with the Levi's package.

Thanks for educating me Fristi

But here's a question..... I think from memory that both Tomica and Playart produced model Beetles with the tampo down the sides that looks like the design on the early Jeans Beetles (although I don't think either had Jeans lettering - I think the Tomy had "Beetle" and the Playart had no lettering - does anyone have a handy pic of either model??)

So are these Tomicas and Playarts actually Jeans Beetles (which would be cool), or did this design also appear on regular Bugs??

Those stripes were never used on "normal"beetles but I think those brands just used them because they look cool. Mebetoys did put Jeans on the side but on a 1303. There hasn't been a 1303 Beetle released by VW which leads me to believe it's the '74 Jeans kit :)
I really like these models and should pick some of these up :/ I only have a Playart but in VERY bad condition :P

Yes it is, a lot of brands did Jeans/Denim edition cars. Renault R5, Seat Marbella, VW Polo, Ford Denim Machine etc. VW even released a new Denim edition Beetle last year! :)
