The Quest Continues
One or another image in this series may have been posted here before, but Photobucket is holding my links hostage, so here it is again. :P

Dinky (France) model 804. Re-numbered from 821 in 1973 by Dinky. This is a 1:43 scale die-cast replica of the Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG Type 404S troop carrier, which was used by the Swiss Army. The full scale Type 404S was a Mercedes "Ponton" era vehicle made by Daimler-Benz at their truck manufacturing plant in Gaggenau, Germany from 1956 to 1980.

Differences between Dinky models 821 and 804

  • Tires of 821 may be smooth or include sidewall treads
  • Tires of 804 have sidewall treads
  • Left rear of 821 may include transfer decal of French flag
  • Front axle "keeper plate" of 821 may be unpainted, with unpainted, open (or rounded head) rivet, and may have "821" embossed
  • Front axle "keeper plate" of 804 matches body color, uses rivet with rounded head, and has no model number
  • Trailer hook of 821 is fixed to body by painted, open (or rounded head) rivet
  • Trailer hook rivet of 804 is painted, with rounded head
  • Baseplate of 821 (back to front): "Meccano France / Mercedes UNIMOG" or "Dinky Toys / Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG / Meccano France"
  • Baseplate of 804 (front to back): "Meccano / Dinky Toys / 804 / Mercedes tous terrains / Made in France"

Indeed a very nice model. Our military used these for many years. They now have the modern Unimog.

Here in the states, Case sold the Unimog, and the military had two versions, backhoe and forklift. The National Guard here had several before they were replaced with JCB HMEEs, which was armored up Fastracs.

As a collector of the Swiss Soldier's knives, I've been looking for one of these for some time. It's very well done.
