So, wanted to get a kit (1/87) of this one, but it was out of stock, so I decided to try build it myself, in 1/64th scale.

Found some drawings on the Internet, with measurements for scale 1/50, so that was a nice starting point.

Here's some pictures on how it's being built. (Mind you, I am not going for an exact copy ...)

The base, and in the background one of the drawings used.

(4mm MDF, some bamboo for the wall bases

Building the walls.
(Basically using them bamboo sticks you use for cocktail snacks)

Put some colour on the floor. Added a desk with a cash register, and a shelf.
Posted Image

Fitting the roof, after painting a base white coat.
(Roof is yet a gain 4mm MDF)
Posted Image

Details in red added. Glass fitted.

Painted the roof.

Done?
Well, could do some more detailing.
And, oh yeah, it needs some pavement, and the thingies in the foreground would be nice as well... :)

Excellent work! Love the attention to detail on the interior. It will look great with a forecourt and pumps.

Some 'progress'.

Added some random stuff to the inside ...
(Three seats from a bus, a stack of wooden beams, the hood of some 20's(?) car, a vending machine, a plant in a pot - on the shelf)

Posted Image

Created a black base plate.

Put a logo on top (it's loose, so can be removed easily).
Detailed a pump by adding a line to it. And a handle.
And two reservoirs, the red one contains water to put out the odd fire, the other one water to... for watering the grass/plants (?)

Posted Image

Posted Image

In the end, I am just stuck, got no ideas.
Dunno what to do regarding roads/grass, where to put what ... trees?
Cars? Well, some VW's might do ...

 Awesome - great details for the interior and for the forecourt. The use of the hood in the interior is so neat!

Look at photographs of period gas stations if you're stuck for forecourt ideas. Then get yourself a base and get busy! Why not start with the gas station that inspired you? It has a nice little forecourt.

Thanks!!

Had just started on the as station before I saw your reply DinoMom :)

It was the only way to go.
Especially as I could borrow/steal some relevant parts from a different did I did while ago:

(This one was to be part of a VW garage I wanted to build, it was a garage in the area where I grew up in, and where my dad's Beetle got its service done... but that build never got anywhere, and it probably never will.)

Looks Fantastic , You have a lot of talent ,

Re your ? Diorama wise ,It all depends on how much space you have and how big you want it ?

You could start off with a base board similar to the one webestang64 is using in his ( Building 1st Street Dio ) thread

If you want more backdrop space , move the road closer to the front ,

You can put your larger trees at the back tapering to smaller trees and bushes at the front leaving room for the Service station and grass etc on either side before the road at the front
Rocks and bushes can be put anywhere ,
Add a street sign, a telegraph pole or 2 , rubbish ( very finely chopped up paper or whatever )
I just use a white paper backing , but you can buy proper scene backing from Model train shops , or just take it outside and gets some pics with a real life backdrop
Take some photos at all different angles and see what needs improving

Looking forward to more pics

This is wonderful. I like the idea of changing it up as the mood fits. Your basic building could be, a gas station (like the ESSO), a car dealer (as per your VW sign), or how bout a small diner that's known for one specialty food and can seat 20 patrons max :) I think a little diner would be super-cool :)

So, in the end... going for a diner / service / gas station combo :D

Here's some progress on creating seating area for the diner part.
The seats come from a very cheap bus. I had ripped that bus apart months ago, and somehow managed to save just enough seats for this diner.

(The tables will be painted white)

Creating some lights for over the tables.

And then, I got a bit silly, and pressed some buttons/keys in Paint Shop Pro 7, 10th Anniversary Edition... (From November 2001 - It still works!)

I just love how you took the seats out of a bus to make the diner tables. I think I will have to do the same if ever the opportunity arises.

I've really been enjoying this build thread. I love how you've created it all from scratch.

Would you mind sharing your blueprints? Or providing measurements? Just in case I might want to build one someday.

No problem in sharing here... the problem is I found some drawings in 1/50 scale, on the Internets, and used those. But I think I lost them :(
In the first build picture on this thread you can see one of them that I printed.
I will keep looking, can't promise to deliver any good result though... Sorry!

I'm thinking, what size do you go for with your layouts? I really think if you incorporated this building into a roadside services, with another building and some shady green areas, it would look really attractive and give you lots of opportunities for scenery and layouts :)
