oh thats cool!
Didn't know what the MBX one was suppose to represent! B)
Also that is LOW to the ground too! :o

MBX also used a Mack fire truck as a floodlight truck too

but GREEN is a odd color for a fire truck
Tho I seen a fire truck in a flat Olive Green for the US Army b4

Very neat to see Brian, thanks for posting it......It'd be nice if they reintroduced the Matchbox model,
though I guess it had many years in the line anyway, but the working ladder was great.

Yes Oshkosh designed this low profile cab for departments with height issues. If you look in the first photo you can see how much taller the standard height cab next to it is. These chassis / cab series was know as an L-series, and had amid engine set up. The top of the cab is said to be about 72" from the ground.

The theory with these Oshkosh rigs was it would give departments that had height restrictions (such as bridges or older fire houses) the ability to have a rear mount ladder truck, as their popularity was growing in the 1960's and 70's. Over all the low cab concept proved unpopular due to the height it really restricted visibility of the driver and most departments with height restrictions would preferred to continue using the mid-mount set up.

I should note most of the L series were aerial apparatus, but am aware the San Francisco Fire Dept. had pumper built on the chassis for use at SF International airport due to low clearance in the may parking garages and some other facilities on the property. However I believe this rig was taken out of service and replaced with a standard pumper.

Saw the post shortly after you put it up, but I just now noticed the VA inspection sticker and Abingdon on the door, which is about an hour and a half west of me. So, technically a local rig.

Wondering if you happened to get a photo of the rear end? On the Matchbox, there's a Pierce logo oval on the rear of the truck, and I wonder if it's present on the 1:1?

I did a google search for the truck and only a couple L-series show up, and one of them is this very truck (not your pics far as I can tell). Anyway, thanks for letting us see this cool ladder, even if it was not well-received in real life.
