The newest mix of Matchbox Best Of was released a few weeks ago. Two of my favorite Matchbox models were included, the Porsche 914 and the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. Unfortunately they rehashed the deco's on both from earlier versions. I'm still glad to have them, but I do wish they had done them a little differently. Anyway, here is a comparison of both with their prior versions. First, the 914. In this case, the livery was originally used in the Lesney Edition line. The newer one has an orange tint to the red, while the Lesney Edition is a truer red. They also have different wheels and different colored bases, as well as metal versus plastic on the base. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Next up is the Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA. The prior version was in the 2008 Best Of International series. The main differences are the wheels and the interior. The earlier version has a black interior and the new one is back to the chrome interior. The new one also has the unfortunate Matchbox real riders that have the off road looking tread instead of a Hot Wheels wheel like some of the other Best Of have been using. The wheels don't really bother me, but I'm pointing them out as I know not a lot of people liked them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The Mustang II is a Mustang too!

Hmn, the original versions are superior to the new ones. Looks like I can skip them. Thanks for the comparison! |

Is there any explanation why these BOTW editions are like inferior version of what came before? I do not understand why they did not come up with smth unique instead.

My only guess is that it's a nod to that era from last decade that's so popular. These two are both relatively scarce and sought after (by matchbox standards at least), so why not redo them? I do like the hot wheels wheels on the 914. They look fantastic on that car. But so did the old ones. I'm glad to have both. If you don't mind paying more, go for the old ones (assuming you don't have them already). The new ones are worth the retail price. But they won't probably ever be worth more than that like the old ones.

Both models are quite nice, and at the very least I will need to acquire the Alfa (having missed out on its original releases). With that said, I really do wish that it sported the HW wheels instead of the Ultra Max ones. As for the Porsche, I'm not sure if I'll end up picking that one up as well. Thanks for the photos and comparisons! |

Thanks for sharing and comparing these Ben! Bizzaro..... Not sure if I'd want to call the new ones "Best of", since the old ones seem to be better. I was, and still am, happy to have gotten the new ones, but now it looks like I still want to get the old ones.

Egh, paint it purple with polka dots, and turn it into a donk, and I'll still buy it. That's my favorite Matchbox casting and one of very few cars I'm a completest on. |

I'll grab the 914, not sure about the Alfa since I have one of the white releases already. The offroad wheels can go on something else and I'll swap CM5s or something else on to it.
You're giving me ideas. Dangerous ideas.

They really have to get rid of those off road tires on normal cars. |
