I am sincerely hoping our friends in Florida fare well in the upcoming disaster of hurricane Irma. To Jim (fucumi) and Doug (Douglas) and (forgive me for not remembering) any others in the potential path of the gigantic storm. I'm sure all of the membership will join me in wishing you safe and secure shelter in the days to come. I hope we hear from both of you soon, especially as soon as possible in the aftermath. Also, belatedly, I'm hoping any Texans among us have escaped harm or loss from the devastation of Harvey. |

Thinking and praying for all our members down in Florida as well as those in Texas. I know we have quite a few members from the Garage in both states. It appears to be a nasty year for hurricanes. |

Thanks everyone for the concern and prayers, they are definitely needed for us. Yes there are a number of other members here from Florida that I knew of, including Wes, (jauntoo3).... hope you stay safe guys! I'll hope to post back in when I can, but since McDonald's is my internet service, They will probably be closed Sunday and Monday like I suspect most businesses in the area, and then it'll depend on whether the one I go to will even have power or possibly damage to deal with before they reopen. |

LOL...nurse I work with is from Michigan, and she and her husband bugged out last night. Tough decision to make, get caught up in the evacuation frenzy, empty gas stations, no motel rooms clear into GA and AL, idiot drivers, possibly getting caught in the storm stuck somewhere on the highway... I'll stay closer to home for this one, but if it looks too scary I'm taking the family to the local hospital to wait out the storm. Hospital has food, water and electricity (generator), and medical help if needed. Seems best alternative to me, at least locally. |

See they are now predicting it to go up the Gulf side/Tampa area - that is where Big Tractor Mike lives and I am thinking other members of the Garage as well but names are not coming to me this morning. |

I've been watching that new course to the Gulf side today, unfortunately that puts most of Florida on the worst side of a hurricane, the dirty side as they call it, not to mention the storm picks up strength over the warm waters, but yeah Mike and Jim both live over that way, and they appear to be in for some of the worst of it now. |

Been a busy week, as I ended up with my parents who live in Naples seeking refuge from Irma with me. The word today is their building is standing, and seems undamaged, but much of the area is pretty messed up. Lets all keep those effected by the hurricanes in our thoughts and prayers. Also remember the public safety personnel, National Guardsmen, and Utility workers who are working many long hours to care for and check on residents as well as attempt to restore things to normal as quickly as possible. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Brian49, Sep 11 2017, 09:13 PM.

We're all ok here southwest of Orlando. We had lots of very strong winds; the eye wall passed right over us as Irma's eye was breaking apart. I had a little shingle damage on the house and our neighborhood suffered lots of tree damage and screen damage to covered pool enclosures. Surprisingly, we did not lose power, so we were really lucky! Watching the window glass flex on our large windows was pretty scary. Diecast collection is also SAFE. I'm happy to have survived my first hurricane. |

It is almost inconceivable to me the numbers of people who did lose power during Irma's wrath....not to mention the unfathomable destruction in the Caribbean....but to think of 6 million or more people who might be without electricity in a US state, for possibly weeks or months, is just stunning. And this is coming from a person who grew up in southern California, moved to Alaska for 20+ years, and survived several significant earthquakes in both states. The little town of Helena, California, was nearly wiped out a couple of weeks ago by a wildfire; 72 homes destroyed, many others seriously damaged. I used to drive, then supervise, forest fire engines along that highway. Outside of northern California, you almost never hear about incidents like that....of course, with hurricanes and the most rainfall ever in a single storm happening at the same time, Helena is a mere blip on the tragedy scale. |

Yeah, whether it is fire, high water, or high winds, it is always sad to hear of peoples losses, more so when lives are lost. In hurricanes and other bad storms I guess, it seems there are always a number of tragic events after the storm, people using chain saws unsafely, and many injuries and even death because of the lack of electricity, there has been at least a couple families in Florida who've had deaths because they had their generators inside their homes, yes inside, simply because they didn't know how to operate one safely, where carbon monoxide overcame them. But through the tragedy, there are always some heartwarming stories of human compassion, and great kindness in the hard times, like the story many of you have probably heard about the kind customer at Lowes home improvement store, who, after purchasing his generator, ended up gifting it to another customer there who was in distress because she missed out while next in line when they ran out, she really needed one for her father with medical issues. One part of that story they seemed to have left out when I'd seen it on the national news, was the next day, when the local news was seemingly doing a follow up story, they brought the generous man back to the store, where the Lowes store was waiting to gift to him another generator they had set aside from the next shipment they received. Another great thing I've heard on the radio today, the power companies are reporting that with the help of crews from all over the US, and even Canada, they have thus far restored 4 million homes and businesses here in Florida with power, and if you count them up, that is in just 3 days. |

It is always heartwarming to hear how people step forward to help one another in times of disaster. We have a church member who works for one of our rural power companies - a few years ago we experienced a nasty Oct. winter storm that destroyed hundreds of miles of power lines. There were many power companies that came in from all corners of the US to help...and had to endure ND wind and cold. Now, she commented that some of their crews have been dispatched to hurricane affected areas to help. Know our local Red Cross, Salvation Army crews have been mobilized as have other disaster response teams. Next door in Montana where over 100,000 acres have been consumed by wild and forest fires there have been homes and businesses lost, cattle and other animals burned to death, many people relocated and lots and lots of smoke - there are also fires in Idaho, Washington and Oregon. So many disasters at one time and resources spread thin. |

I'm really glad my area was spared. Other parts of my county were not. Naples was mentioned earlier, but, Key West, Miami, and Jacksonville were hit hard too. In fact, Miami-Dade Police had to stop responding to calls, as it was so bad that the officers would have been in serious danger. |
